OATEY 14009 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Oatey 14009 Flex-Flash roof flashing fit a 1-1/2 inch vent pipe?
Yes. The Oatey 14009 Flex-Flash covers pipe sizes from 1-1/4 inch through 1-1/2 inch. The self-sealing collar slides down over the pipe and seals against it, so no caulking is needed at the pipe penetration. If your stack is 2 inch or larger, this is the wrong size flashing.
2) What roof pitch can the Oatey 14009 Flex-Flash be installed on?
Any pitch from 0 to 45 degrees, flat roofs included. The plastic base is flexible, so it conforms to the deck across that range rather than needing a pitched-specific pan. Above 45 degrees it is out of its rated range.
3) Can I use Flex-Flash on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The Oatey 14009 Flex-Flash is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. The plastic base will not take that application, and petroleum based products and paint must not be used on the collar or base either, which rules out most BUR adhesives and coatings. For a hot-mopped roof, use a lead or galvanized pan flashing instead.
4) Is the Oatey 14009 roof flashing rated for a hot vent, like a B-vent or a water heater flue?
It is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and approved for Type B installations. That covers a Type B gas vent within its temperature rating. It is not a substitute for a single-wall flue pan on an appliance that runs hotter than 180 F.
5) How big is the base on the Oatey 14009 flashing, and will it fit between my rafters?
The base measures 9 x 11 inches. That is the deck footprint you need clear around the penetration to lap the flashing under the upper course of shingles and over the lower course. The whole unit weighs 0.413 lb, so it is a one-hand install.
6) Do I need caulk or sealant to install a Flex-Flash vent pipe flashing?
Not at the pipe. The collar on the 14009 is self-sealing and slides over the pipe, so nothing is caulked at the penetration. What you must not do is run petroleum based sealants, roof cements, or paint onto the collar or the plastic base, since those attack the material.
