OATEY 14012 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Oatey 14012 Flex-Flash roof flashing work on a pitched roof?
The 14012 Flex-Flash is built for roof pitches from 0 to 45 degrees, so it covers flat decks through steep residential slopes. The flexible plastic base conforms to the deck instead of needing a pitch-specific pan. Above 45 degrees you are outside what this flashing is rated for.
2) What pipe size does the Oatey 14012 roof flashing fit?
It is the 2 inch version of Oatey's Flex-Flash roof flashing, sized for 2 inch vent pipe. The self-sealing collar slides down over the pipe and seals against it with no caulk, so there is nothing else to buy to finish the penetration.
3) Can I use the Oatey Flex-Flash on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The 14012 Flex-Flash is specifically not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. The same goes for contact with petroleum based products or paint on either the collar or the plastic base, which will degrade them. For a built-up or modified bitumen assembly, use a metal-base flashing instead.
4) Is the Oatey 14012 flashing rated for a Type B vent or hot flue gases?
It is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and approved for Type B installations. That covers a 2 inch Type B vent and standard plumbing vent stacks. Anything running hotter than 180F continuous is outside the rating.
5) Do I need caulk or sealant to install the Oatey 2 inch Flex-Flash?
No sealant is needed at the pipe. The collar is self-sealing and slides over the vent pipe on its own. Your flashing work is limited to shingling the base in correctly, weaving the upper edge under the course above and leaving the lower edge over the course below.
6) What is the Oatey 14012 flashing made of, and will the plastic base hold up on a black shingle roof?
Base and collar are plastic, finished black so it blends with dark shingles and does not read as a bright spot on the roof. Keep roofing cements and coatings that are petroleum based off it, and keep paint off it too, since those are the things that attack the plastic.
