1) What pipe sizes does the Oatey 12974 No-Calk roof flashing fit?
The Oatey 12974 covers vent pipes from 1.5 inch through 3 inch. The patented All-Flash collar is what makes that range possible on a single part, so one flashing handles the usual mix of 1-1/2, 2 and 3 inch vent stacks on a residential roof instead of stocking three separate SKUs.
2) Do I need to caulk around the collar on the Oatey 12974 vent flashing?
No caulking. The collar is self-sealing and simply slides down over the pipe to make the seal. One caution that matters on the roof: keep petroleum based products and paint off the collar, so no roof cement smeared around the pipe and no painting it to match the shingles.
3) What roof pitch will the Oatey 12974 aluminum flashing work on?
The metal base is rated for pitches from 0 to 40 degrees, which is up to a 10/12 roof. Steeper than 10/12 and you need a flashing made for high-slope work. On the flat end it goes to 0 degrees, but read the next limitation before you use it on a low-slope roof.
4) Can I use the Oatey 12974 on a flat built-up or hot-mopped roof?
No. The 12974 is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. Hot asphalt application will damage it, and the collar is not compatible with petroleum based materials. For a hot-mopped commercial deck you want a flashing specified for built-up work, typically a lead or heavy galvanized base sized to the stack.
5) Can the Oatey 12974 flashing be used on a Type B gas vent?
Yes, it is approved for Type B installations and rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat. That covers Type B gas vent as well as ordinary DWV vent stacks in the 1.5 to 3 inch range. If your flue runs hotter than 180 F continuous, this is not the right base.
6) How big is the base plate on the Oatey 12974, and will it fit under a standard shingle course?
The stamped aluminum base is 18 x 18 inches, which gives you roughly the coverage a standard three-tab or architectural course expects, with the upper edge tucked under the shingles above and the lower apron lapped over the course below. Because the base is aluminum, it shapes easily to the deck instead of fighting you on an uneven roof.
7) I manage a property with several vent sizes on one roof. Can I stock one flashing for all of them?
