OATEY 82169 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 82169 general purpose drain connect to 4 inch ABS pipe?
Yes. The 82169 has a 4 inch hub base molded in ABS, so it takes 4 inch ABS DWV pipe solvent welded into the hub. Because the body is ABS, use ABS cement (or an approved transition cement if you are tying into PVC) rather than straight PVC cement.
2) Do I need to order the grate and ring separately with the Oatey 82169?
No. The 82169 comes as a complete assembly: ABS hub base, 6 inch nickel grate, and the round ring. The only thing you supply is the 4 inch ABS pipe and the cement.
3) What size is the grate on the Oatey 82169 floor drain?
It ships with a 6 inch round nickel grate and a round ring. The 6 inch strainer sits over a 4 inch hub outlet, so plan your finished floor opening around the 6 inch grate, not the 4 inch pipe size.
4) Is the strainer on this Oatey drain metal or plastic?
Metal. The grate is nickel, while the drain body itself is ABS plastic. That pairing is common for general purpose floor drains: the plastic body keeps the buried portion corrosion free and the nickel grate gives you a metal walking surface at the finished floor.
5) What is a hub base drain and when would I use it instead of a no-caulk or threaded drain?
A hub base drain has a socket (hub) that the pipe cements into, so it is for new work or a repipe where you are running fresh 4 inch ABS up to the drain. If you are dropping a drain onto an existing cut stub or need to seal to cast iron or an odd pipe, you want a no-caulk or compression style body instead. The 82169 is the hub version in 4 inch ABS.
6) Is the Oatey 82169 a one-model item or are there other sizes?
The 82169 is a single configuration: model 82169, 4 inch ABS hub with the 6 inch nickel round grate. Order by that model number to get this exact base, grate and ring combination.
