OATEY 72186 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Oatey 72186 drain and where would it be used?
The Oatey 72186 is a 6 inch PVC adjustable commercial floor drain supplied with a 6 inch chrome grate. PVC body, so it solvent welds into a PVC drain line, and the adjustable design lets the strainer be set to finished floor height as the slab or topping is poured. It is a commercial-duty floor drain rather than a residential shower drain.
2) Can I set the Oatey 72186 floor drain to match my finished floor height?
Yes, that is the point of the adjustable body. The strainer assembly raises and lowers so the 6 inch chrome grate can be brought flush with the finished floor after the rough-in is set, which is what you want when the topping, tile or mud bed thickness is not final at rough-in.
3) Does the Oatey 72186 come with the grate, or do I order the strainer separately?
The grate is included. The 72186 ships as a complete assembly with the 6 inch chrome grate, so there is no separate strainer to add to the order. You still supply the PVC pipe, solvent cement and primer for the connection.
4) Is the Oatey 72186 grate metal or plastic?
The grate is chrome, a metal strainer over a PVC drain body. That combination is common in commercial work where the walking surface needs to take traffic and cleaning but the body below the floor stays plastic for corrosion resistance and solvent-weld connection.
5) How heavy is the Oatey 72186 drain for a materials takeoff?
The 72186 weighs 5.3 pounds as shipped, with a shipping volume of 0.729. Useful if you are counting out a floor of drains for a delivery or figuring what a single installer can carry to the deck.
