Paxton Access Inc 356-310-US – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Paxton E50 exit button work with a Net2 or Switch2 access control system?
The E50 exit button works with Paxton Compact, Switch2 and Net2 systems, and it's styled to match Paxton's proximity readers and keypads, so it sits alongside them on the wall without looking like an add-on. Electrically it is a simple SPST momentary switch running at 12V DC, so it drops into the request-to-exit input of those panels.
2) Can I wire the Paxton E50 exit button directly to a maglock instead of a controller?
The E50 is a momentary SPST switch, meaning one dry contact pair that closes only while the button is held. Wired in series with a maglock supply it will break power for as long as someone presses it, and restore it on release. That is the standard way these get used on a mag, but there's no latching or timed hold in the button itself, so if you need the door to stay released for a set number of seconds, that timing has to come from the controller or a separate timer relay.
3) Does the Paxton E50 exit button mount in a back box or on the wall surface?
Surface mount, and that's what makes it quick on a retrofit. The body measures 2 inches by 2.3 inches with a depth of 0.6 inches, so it sits nearly flush against the wall and only needs a cable route behind it rather than a cut-in box. A fitting kit is supplied with the button.
4) I ordered the black Paxton E50 exit button but the other hardware on the job is white. Do I have to reorder?
No reorder needed. Every E50 ships with both a black and a white clip-on 50mm fascia in the box, and the cover goes on at the final stage of installation. You pick the color on site to match the readers and plates already on the opening.
5) Is the Paxton E50 exit button tough enough for a school corridor or a public lobby?
Vandal resistance on the E50 is rated low, so it belongs on staff-side doors, offices, back-of-house corridors and tenant areas rather than an unsupervised public lobby or a school hallway where the button is the first thing that gets hit. For an abuse-prone opening, specify a stainless vandal-resistant push plate or a touch-sensitive plate instead.
6) Should I use a push button exit device or a touch sensitive one for a request to exit?
A mechanical push button like the E50 gives a physical click and a real SPST contact closure, which is what most techs want for a straightforward request-to-exit on a controller input, and it is cheaper to fault-find because you can meter the contact. A touch sensitive lens, like the one Paxton uses on the marine exit button in the same E series, has no moving parts to wear and reads as more finished on a visible wall, but it is still interior-rated. Choose the mechanical button where the opening is used heavily and the touch lens where appearance leads.
7) What size Paxton E series exit button should I order, and what makes the E50 the 50mm one?
Paxton builds the E series exit button in three sizes, and the E50 is the 50mm version: a 2 by 2.3 inch square push button with a 0.6 inch depth. That footprint suits a narrow return, a door jamb reveal, or a spot beside a reader where a full push plate would not fit. If you're standardizing a building, the size choice is mostly about the wall space and how visible you want the button, since all three share the same E series styling.
8) What comes in the box with the Paxton E50 exit button, and what do I still need to supply?
The E50 ships as the 50mm exit button, a black clip-on cover, a white clip-on cover, a fitting kit, a serial number label and a tech support label. What is not in the box is the cable run back to the panel, the 12V DC supply, and any relay or timer if the door needs a timed release. The button is an SPST momentary contact only.
9) Will the Paxton E50 exit button run on a 24V access control power supply?
Operating voltage on the E50 is 12V DC. It's a dry SPST contact rather than a powered device, so the voltage figure is the switching rating on the contact, not a supply the button draws. Don't run it on a 24V maglock circuit directly, switch a 12V controller input or a relay coil within rating instead.
