Paxton Access Inc 010-403-US – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I power a Paxton10 door controller over the network cable, or do I need to run separate power to the door?
Both options are on the board. The Paxton10 controller takes PoE at 42.5-57V DC, 25.5W (IEEE 802.3at Type 2), giving 12.8V DC at 3.6A on the output side, so a single Cat cable back to a PoE+ switch does data and power together. If you'd rather use a local transformer, it also runs on 24V AC through its 4A supply, which puts out 12 or 24V DC at 4A. Controller input voltage is 12V to 24V DC.
2) Will a Paxton10 controller drive my maglock or electric strike directly, or do I need a separate lock power supply?
There's a powered lock output on board rated 12V DC at 1A, so a 12V strike or maglock inside that draw wires straight to the controller with no extra supply. Anything above 1A, or a 24V lock, has to be switched through one of the two relays and fed from its own supply. Those relays are rated 30V DC at 2A, which is a dry contact rating, not a power source.
3) How many readers can I put on one door with a Paxton10 door controller?
Two readers or keypads per door, which is what you need for in-and-out reading on the same opening, or a reader outside with a keypad inside. Reader power comes off the RS485 reader output at 12V DC, 1A max, and that output is for Paxton readers. The RS485 connector output is separate, 24V DC at 750mA max, for Paxton connectors.
4) Does a Paxton10 door still unlock on a valid credential if the network or server goes down?
Yes. Programming is stored locally on the controller, so the door keeps making its own access decisions when the connection to the server is lost. It's an IP data connection back to the system, but the credential list and permissions don't live only on the server. Add the optional 12V DC 7Ah backup battery on the battery connectors and the door also rides through a power outage.
5) Is the Paxton10 controller UL listed for access control?
UL 294 and FCC Part 15 Subpart C. UL 294 is the access control system units standard, which is the listing a spec on a commercial or institutional job normally calls for on the controller itself.
6) Does the Paxton10 controller record video, or do I need a separate NVR?
This version handles video itself. It has two SATA inputs that take a pair of drives in RAID1, so the access control and the camera recording sit in one unit instead of a controller plus a separate recorder. The drives are not included, you order those separately and match them as a pair for the mirror.
7) What door inputs does the Paxton10 controller have besides the reader connection?
Three of them: a door contact input for monitoring whether the door is actually closed, an exit button input for the request-to-exit device on the secure side, and a tamper input. There's also one voltage free digital input. That covers a standard monitored opening, door position, REX, and tamper, without adding an interface module.
8) How much space do I need to leave on the wall for a Paxton10 controller?
Allow a 12-23/32 inch square footprint with 2-63/64 inches of depth off the wall. It's a wall mount unit, so plan a spot in the IT closet or above the ceiling grid access panel where you can get a screwdriver to the terminals and still swing the cover, and where the Cat cable and any 24V AC feed can land.
9) Can a Paxton10 door controller be installed in an unheated garage or an exterior equipment cabinet?
Only where it stays between 32F and 113F. That rules out an unconditioned space in a cold climate and a sun-loaded exterior cabinet in summer. Mount it inside the conditioned envelope and run the reader and lock wiring out to the opening instead, the controller doesn't have to be near the door.
10) What is the current draw on a Paxton10 controller for sizing a power supply or UPS?
With the backup battery already full, it idles at 74mA/3.87W and peaks at 122mA/6.39W. While the battery is charging it draws more, 114mA/5.9W idle and 160mA/8.3W max. Size to the charging figures, that's the worst case after a power event. Note those numbers are the controller itself, lock current on the 12V DC 1A output is on top of that.
11) What color does the Paxton10 single door controller come in?
