Net2 plus is a networked access control system. A networked system gives the advantages of central control, event reporting and flexible control over users' access. Each control unit is part of a network but can run independently making its own decisions and remembering events. One Net2 plus control unit can be the network interface to the LAN and also run a wired RS485 daisy chain of other Net2 plus or Net2 classic units, removing the need for an independent TCP/IP to RS485 converter. Net2 plus is available with 12/24V power supply AC DC, power over Ethernet (POE), or trigger disconnect power supply for, which is suitable for fire alarm disconnect. PoE is a technology that allows both power and data to be passed along Ethernet cabling. Net2 plus with PoE simply plugs straight into the existing LAN using a standard RJ45 plug (providing it is powered by either a PoE switch or a PoE injector). Control units are sold as a PCB board only or within a plastic housing. The Net2 plus unit now comes with PoE+ power supply in metal/plastic cabinet; no separate mains supply back-up required.

1) Can a Paxton Net2 Plus door controller run on Power over Ethernet without a separate power supply?
The metal-enclosure Net2 Plus single door controller ships with a PoE+ PSU built in, so it plugs straight into an existing LAN with a standard RJ45 plug and takes both power and data over that one Ethernet run. The feed has to come from a PoE switch or a PoE injector. With the PoE+ supply in the cabinet there is no separate mains supply back-up to install. For a property manager, that means the cardholder database is not the constraint on a mid-size or large building, but if you plan to run keypad codes rather than credentials, plan around the 50 code limit and use user credentials for the bulk of the population.
6) Should I buy the Net2 Plus in a metal enclosure or the PCB-only version?
Paxton sells Net2 Plus control units as a PCB board only or within a housing. The PCB-only board is for dropping into an existing equipment cabinet or a third-party enclosure where power is already provided. The metal enclosure version is the one to specify when the controller is being surface mounted on a wall in a riser, closet or back-of-house area and needs its own housing and its own PoE+ supply in the box. For an institutional or MRO install where the unit sits exposed in a plant room, the metal cabinet is the version you want.
7) How many doors does one Paxton Net2 Plus control unit cover?
One door. The Net2 Plus unit here is a single door networkable access control unit, so a four-door opening schedule needs four control units, networked over TCP/IP or daisy chained on RS485 off one of them. Count controllers by door, not by building.
