Net2 plus is a single door access control unit and is the most advanced control unit in the Paxton range. Employing the latest technology, it offers huge potential for future expansion and as security technology develops, Net2 plus can take full advantage. Paxton Access Inc 682-610-US – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Paxton Net2 Plus single door controller run on my 12V access control power supply?
The Net2 Plus controller runs on 12VDC +/- 20% or 24VDC +/- 20%, so a standard 12V supply works. Draw is 200mA at 12VDC, plus whatever your readers pull through the controller (the reader ports share a 500mA total output). Note the version supplied with the metal enclosure and PSU here is a 24V PSU with 12/24V output, so the site needs a 24V circuit feeding it, or a transformer stepping 110V down to 24V.
2) Can I use my existing 26 bit Wiegand readers with a Paxton Net2 Plus, or do I have to buy Paxton readers?
Third party readers work. The Net2 Plus accepts 26 bit Wiegand and custom Wiegand up to 50 bits, plus clock and data, so most standard prox and card readers wire straight in. Two reader ports per unit, and up to four readers or keypads total, but check the current draw of each one against the 500mA total reader port output before you load it up. Reader cable is Belden 9540 or equivalent C0745A.
3) Is the Paxton Net2 Plus UL listed for access control?
Certifications listed are UL 294 and FCC Part 15. UL 294 is the access control system units standard, which is the listing an AHJ or a spec on a commercial job normally calls for on a door controller.
4) What happens to my doors if the Net2 Plus loses its network connection to the server PC?
Access decisions keep running at the door. The Net2 Plus holds its user and permission data locally and continues to grant or deny access while comms are down, then reports the stored activity back to the PC once the connection returns. It buffers 2500+ events and retains data for 30 days through a total power loss, so a weekend outage doesn't wipe the unit.
5) Can the Paxton Net2 Plus switch a maglock or an electric strike directly, and can it drive a bell?
The control relay is volt free and rated 4A max at 24V DC, which covers a typical electric strike or maglock circuit. There is a separate alarm/bell output rated 1A. Because the relay is dry contact, you feed the lock from its own supply rather than through the controller, which is how you keep the lock's inrush off the board.
6) Can I mount a Net2 Plus controller enclosure outside on an exterior wall or in a parking garage?
No. The Net2 Plus is not moisture resistant and must go inside a weatherproof housing if it is used externally. Vandal resistance is low, so keep it in a secure interior space, an electrical room or the protected side of the opening, and run the reader out to the exposed side. Operating range is 0 to 55 C (32 to 131 F), which also rules out an unheated northern vestibule.
7) Should I wire Paxton Net2 Plus controllers to the network individually or daisy chain them on RS485?
Both are supported and the choice is about how many network drops you want to pay for. Net2 Plus has on-board TCP/IP with an RJ45 plug, so a single door can go straight onto the LAN, and it supports DHCP (a fixed IP is recommended). For a larger building, chain the controllers together on a dedicated RS485 network instead so you only need one or two TCP/IP points. Ethernet runs at 100Mbit/s auto MDIX and needs about 200 kbits/sec of bandwidth per unit. Network cable is CAT5, or Belden 8723 / C1352A for the RS485 run.
8) Will one Paxton Net2 Plus handle a 50,000 card population, or do I need a bigger system?
Capacity is 50,000 users and tokens per controller, with 250 access levels, 64 time zones, and 50 codes. That covers a large campus or a multi-building REIT portfolio on a single database. Door open time is adjustable from 1 second to 5000 seconds, which is what you want for a loading dock or an ADA opening that needs a long unlock.
9) How much wall space do I need for the Paxton Net2 Plus metal enclosure?
The enclosure measures 12.6 x 12.5 x 2.71 inches, and it is wall mount. Allow clearance around it for the lid swing and for the conduit or cable entries feeding the reader, lock, door contact and exit button legs.
10) Can the Net2 Plus be installed above a ceiling in a return air plenum?

Different Net2 control units can be mixed on one site, so a Net2 Plus goes onto an existing Net2 system alongside earlier units. Firmware sits in flash memory, so the unit takes upgrades in place rather than needing a board swap as the software moves on.
