Paxton Net2 Plus, Single Door Controller Without Enclosure, TCP/IP, DHCP, 26 Bit Wiegand, 12-24VDC, UL, FCC

Net2 is a PC based security system for controlling access through doors. Net2 allows users to be given access to particular areas at certain times. Because the system is networked, all administration can be done from a central point. Net2 plus is one of three control units for the Net2 system. It is the most advanced control unit, employing the latest technology and offering huge potential for future expansion. As security technology develops, Net2 plus can take full advantage. Using Net2 plus ensures that the investment in access control is safe no matter how the system requirements change. Net2 plus has on-board TCP/IP to allow direct connection to a computer network. This can save time, money and result in a better, more resilient system. Net2 plus control units can also be connected together using a dedicated RS485 network. This reduces the number of TCP/IP network points required for larger systems.

Paxton Access Inc 682-493-US – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Paxton Net2 Plus single door controller come with an enclosure or power supply?
No. This version of the Net2 Plus is the bare control unit board only, no enclosure and no power supply included. You need to supply 11V DC to 15V DC to the unit itself, and separately power whatever lock you are switching. Budget for a cabinet and a suitable PSU on the same order or the board arrives with nowhere to mount and nothing to run it.
2) Will the Net2 Plus controller run my existing 26 bit Wiegand card readers?
Yes. The Net2 Plus accepts 26 bit Wiegand, plus clock and data, and custom Wiegand formats, so most third party reader heads wire straight in. There are 2 reader ports on the unit, supporting up to 4 readers or keypads between them, with a combined reader port output current of 500 mA. Check the current draw of each reader against that 500 mA budget before you hang four off one board.
3) Can the Net2 Plus switch my maglock or electric strike directly, or do I need a relay module?
The on-board relay switches up to 24V DC at 4 A, which covers the usual 12V or 24V maglock and electric strike loads directly. There is also an alarm output rated 1 A. If your lock draws more than 4 A or runs on AC, you will need an interposing relay between the controller and the lock.
4) How many doors and users can a Paxton Net2 system grow to?
Net2 scales to 50,000 users and 50,000 tokens, with a maximum of 500 doors on the system. Each control unit handles one door. Limits along the way: 200 controllers per RS485 data line, 100 TCP/IP connections, and up to 100 data lines per PC. For a property manager standardizing across a portfolio, that means one central database and one administration point rather than per-building systems.
5) What happens to the door and the stored data if the building loses power?
The control unit keeps its user and configuration data for 28 days through a total power loss, so you are not reprogramming credentials after an outage. Each unit also stores 2,728 events locally, which means it keeps enforcing access levels and logging even if the network or the PC goes down. Whether the door itself unlocks depends on the lock you chose, fail safe or fail secure, not on the controller.
6) What is the difference between wiring Net2 Plus over TCP/IP and over RS485?
The Plus unit has an on-board TCP/IP to RS485 converter, so it plugs straight into a network drop with no separate interface box. Ethernet runs 10 to 100 Mbit/s auto MDIX and needs about 200 kbit/s of bandwidth. On a larger site you put one controller on the network and daisy-chain the rest over a dedicated RS485 line at 115.2 kbit/s, up to 200 units per line, which keeps you from burning a network port on every door.
7) Does the Net2 Plus support PIN entry as well as cards?
Yes, PIN and code entry are both supported when you connect a keypad. The system holds 50,000 PINs with a length of 4 to 8 digits, plus 50 shared door codes, also 4 to 8 digits. The codes are useful where you want a single door code for a contractor or delivery entrance without issuing a credential to each person.
8) Does DHCP work on the Net2 Plus, or should I assign a static IP?
DHCP is supported, but a fixed IP is the recommended setup. On a commercial network, reserve an address for each controller at the DHCP server or set it statically, otherwise a lease change can drop the controller off the Net2 server until it is rediscovered.
9) What cable do I need to run to the readers and between Net2 controllers?
Reader runs call for Belden 9540. For the data side, use CAT5 or Belden 8723 for the RS485 line, and standard CAT5 or better for the Ethernet drop. Pulling the right cable the first time matters here because reader runs and RS485 are both shielded types, and substituting plain station wire causes intermittent read failures that are miserable to chase later.
10) What software version do I need to run a Net2 Plus controller?
Net2 software v4.14 or above. If you are adding a Plus unit to an older existing Net2 installation, the server software has to be brought up to at least v4.14 before the new controller will be recognized.
11) Can I use a Net2 Plus controller in an unheated parking garage or vestibule?
Operating range is 32F to 131F, set by the battery limits. That rules out unheated exterior enclosures in climates that drop below freezing. In those cases mount the control unit inside the conditioned space and run the reader cable out to the door rather than putting the board at the opening.
12) How much current does the Net2 Plus board itself draw when sizing a power supply?
The control unit draws 200 mA at 11 to 15V DC. Add the reader load on top, up to 500 mA combined across the reader ports, then add the lock current on the relay side. Size the PSU to the total, not to the board alone, or you will brown out the readers when the lock pulls in.
13) How flexible is scheduling on Net2 for tenants with different access hours?
You get 64 time zones, 2,000 time slots, and 250 access levels, which is enough to give every tenant, cleaning crew, and trade contractor its own window on its own doors from one central database. Door open time is settable from 1 second up to 999,999 seconds, so the same controller handles a quick-relock entry door and a long ADA hold-open.
