Paxton Access Inc 010-522-US – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Paxton10 single door controller be powered from 24V AC, or does it need PoE?
The metal-housed Paxton10 single door controller ships with a 2A power supply that takes 24V AC in and puts out 12/24V DC at 2 amps. That is the AC-powered build. Paxton10 controllers are also offered in a PoE version, where the supply takes 36-57V DC over the network cable (IEEE 802.3at Type 2, 25.5W) and outputs 12.8V DC at 1.8A. If you have network drops at the door and no local transformer, the PoE build is the one to order. If you are feeding doors from an existing 24V AC access control transformer, this is the one.
2) Will a Paxton10 controller still let people through if the network or server goes down?
Yes. Programming is stored locally on the Paxton10 door controller, so it keeps making access decisions at the door if the connection to the server drops. Credentials already loaded keep working; what you lose until the link comes back is live changes and event reporting at the server.
3) Can one Paxton10 door controller handle both an in reader and an out reader?
It supports up to two readers or keypads per door, so in-and-out reading on a single opening is exactly what it is built for. Readers run on the RS485 reader output at 12V DC, 1A max, and that output is for Paxton readers only. Third-party readers are not what that port is rated to feed.
4) Can I power the maglock or strike directly off the Paxton10 controller?
There is a powered lock output rated 12V DC at 1A, so a 12V strike or maglock drawing under an amp runs straight off the board with no separate lock power supply. Anything above that, or a 24V lock, goes through the relays instead, which are rated 30V DC at 2A and switch dry, meaning you supply the lock power separately. Two relays are on board.
5) Is the Paxton10 door controller UL listed for access control?
UL 294 and FCC 15B. UL 294 is the access control system units standard, which is the listing a spec on an institutional or government job normally calls out for a door controller.
6) What door inputs does the Paxton10 controller have for monitoring a door?
It takes a door contact, a request-to-exit button, and a tamper input, plus one voltage free digital input you can use for something else on the opening. That set covers held-open and forced-door monitoring off the contact, free egress off the exit button, and cabinet or reader tamper reporting, without adding an expansion board.
7) Can I add a battery backup to a Paxton10 door controller?
Backup battery connectors are on the board and it takes a 12V DC 7Ah battery, sold separately. Worth sizing your enclosure plan around that, since the battery lives in the metal housing. Draw is low: about 48mA idle and 105mA max once the battery is full, rising to 97mA idle and 108mA max while it is charging.
8) Can a Paxton10 controller go in an unheated parking garage or exterior cabinet?
Rated for 32 to 113 degrees F operating, so anywhere that drops below freezing is out. In a cold-climate garage, stairwell, or exterior gate cabinet, put the controller inside conditioned space and run the reader and lock wiring out to the door rather than mounting the panel at the opening.
9) How does the Paxton10 door controller connect back to the system, and can I run it on existing network cable?
The data connection is IP, so it lands on your LAN like any other network device and reports to the Paxton10 server over the building network rather than a proprietary bus. That is what lets the PoE version of the controller take both data and power from one existing Cat cable run. On this 24V AC version you still get the IP data connection, but power comes from the local 24V AC feed.
10) How many doors will one Paxton10 controller run?
One. This is the single door controller, and you add a controller per opening. The two relays on it are not a second door, they are for lock control plus an auxiliary function such as an alarm shunt or an auto operator trigger on the same door.
11) Can I connect Paxton expansion devices to the Paxton10 controller, and how much power do they get?
There is an RS485 connector output rated 24V DC at 750mA max, and it is for Paxton connectors only. That is your budget when you are hanging Paxton peripherals off the controller, separate from the 12V DC 1A RS485 reader output that feeds the readers.
