Paxton Access Inc 010-495-US – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Paxton10 single door controller be powered over PoE, or do I need a separate 24V AC supply?
Either way works. The Paxton10 single door controller accepts PoE at 36-57V DC, 25.5W (IEEE 802.3at Type 2), which outputs 12.8V DC at 1.8A internally. If you'd rather run it off a transformer, the 2A supply option takes 24V AC in and gives 12/24V DC at 2A out. Controller input voltage is 12V-24V DC. On a retrofit where you already have structured cabling to the door, PoE saves pulling a separate power run, but you need a Type 2 (802.3at) port, not plain 802.3af.
2) Will the Paxton10 controller power my maglock or electric strike directly, or do I need a separate lock power supply?
There's a powered lock output rated 12V DC at 1A, so a 12V strike or maglock drawing under 1 amp runs straight off the controller. Anything higher draw, or a 24V lock, needs its own supply switched through one of the relays. The two onboard relays are rated 30V DC at 2A, so they'll switch a separate lock circuit within that rating.
3) How many card readers can I put on one Paxton10 door controller?
Two readers or keypads per door, which covers the common in-and-out configuration on a single opening. Reader power comes off the RS485 reader output at 12V DC, 1A max, and that output is for Paxton readers only. The RS485 connector output is separate at 24V DC, 750mA max, again Paxton connectors only.
4) Is the Paxton10 door controller UL listed for access control?
UL 294 and FCC Part 15B. UL 294 is the access control system units standard, which is what a spec on a government, healthcare, or school project normally calls for on the controller itself.
5) What happens to the doors if the Paxton10 server or network goes down?
Programming is stored locally on the controller, so credentials keep working and the door keeps granting access if the connection to the server drops. Events buffer at the controller. This matters on multi-building campuses where the network link is the weak point, and it's the reason the unit is a controller rather than a dumb reader interface.
6) What size enclosure do I need to allow for on the wall, and will a 7Ah backup battery fit?
The metal housing measures 12-23/32 x 12-23/32 x 2-63/64 inches (W x H x D) and mounts to the wall. There are backup battery connectors on board for an optional 12V DC, 7Ah battery. Allow clearance for conduit entry and the door swing of the cover when you lay out the closet or above-ceiling position.
7) Can I use the Paxton10 controller outdoors or in an unheated parking garage?
Operating range is 32 to 113 degrees F, so it belongs indoors in conditioned or semi-conditioned space. An unheated garage or an exterior wall in a cold climate will drop below freezing and falls outside that range. Mount the controller inside the secure side of the opening and run reader cable out to the door.
8) What inputs does the Paxton10 single door controller have for door position, REX, and tamper?
You get a door contact input, an exit button input, a tamper input, and one voltage free digital input for a general purpose contact closure. That covers a monitored opening with request-to-exit and enclosure tamper reporting without add-on modules. Field wiring lands on clearly labelled terminals.
9) How does the Paxton10 controller connect back to the system, and does it need a serial or proprietary bus to the head end?
The data connection is IP, so it goes back on standard TCP/IP over the building network with an Ethernet drop. The Paxton RS485 bus on this unit is used for readers and connectors at the door, not for the run back to the server. If you're running PoE, the same Ethernet cable carries both data and power.
10) Do I need one Paxton10 controller per door, or can one unit run two openings?
This is a single door controller, one unit per opening. The two relays are for lock control and an auxiliary function on that same door, not for running a second door. For a bank of entrances, plan on one controller and one Ethernet or 24V AC feed per door.
11) What is the current draw of the Paxton10 controller for sizing a power supply and battery?
With the backup battery charging, it idles at 97mA/5.08W and peaks at 108mA/5.6W. Once the battery is full, idle drops to 48mA/2.53W with a max of 105mA/5.5W. Those figures are the controller alone, so add your reader and lock loads on top when sizing the supply or calculating standby time.
