Satco Lighting S29402 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Satco S29402 PAR20 LED be used in an enclosed fixture?
Yes. The S29402 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can go in a closed can, a jelly jar, or a sealed decorative fixture without the heat trapping problem that kills non-rated LEDs early. It also carries a Wet location rating and is listed for indoor or outdoor use, which covers soffits, covered entries and exterior can lights.
2) Is a 25 degree beam angle too narrow for general room lighting?
Yes, for washing a room it is. A 25 degree spread on the S29402 PAR20 is a narrow flood, meant to put a defined pool of light on something specific: retail merchandise, artwork, a reception desk, a hotel lobby feature wall. If you are lighting a corridor or an open office where the pools should overlap, pick a wider beam PAR20 instead. Use the narrow beam where you want the object lit and the surroundings left alone.
3) Will the Satco S29402 dim on my existing wall dimmer?
The lamp is dimmable, but it is a 6.5 watt load. Older incandescent style dimmers have a minimum load, often well above what one or two of these draw at 0.054 amps each, and under that minimum you get flicker or drop out at the bottom of the range. On an LED rated dimmer it behaves. If you are relamping a circuit that used 50W incandescent PAR20s, plan on changing the dimmer too.
4) Is 3500K too cold looking next to my existing 2700K bulbs?
It will read noticeably whiter. 3500K is neutral white, between the warm yellow of a 2700K incandescent and the cool of 4000K. Mixed on the same wall or ceiling run it is obvious, so relamp a whole space or a whole zone at once rather than one fixture at a time. The 3500K is fixed on the S29402, not field selectable, so you cannot dial it back to match warmer lamps.
5) Does this Satco PAR20 render color well enough for retail or gallery display?
90 CRI, which is the threshold most merchandising and display specs call for. Reds and skin tones hold up, so it works over apparel, food, art and hospitality display where an 80 CRI lamp makes goods look flat. Paired with the 25 degree narrow beam, that is an accent lamp aimed at display work rather than general illumination.
6) Can I mount this LED PAR20 base up or aim it sideways in a track head?
Any orientation. Burning position is universal, so base up in a recessed can, base down in a pendant, or horizontal in a track head all work the same. That matters on LEDs more than it sounds, since some are restricted to base down for heat reasons.
7) Does the Satco S29402 meet California Title 24 for a residential or multi-family job?
It is California T24 listed, so it can be used where a project requires T24 compliant lighting. Useful on multi-family and residential work in California where the inspector checks the lamp, not just the fixture.
8) How long before I have to relamp these in a high ceiling?
25,000 hours average rated life. Running 12 hours a day that is roughly 5.7 years before the lamp is at end of rated life, which is the calculation that decides whether a lift rental or a scissor lift day is worth it in a lobby or atrium. Hospitality and MRO buyers standardizing a property usually relamp a whole zone on one visit rather than chasing singles.
9) Is the S29402 a clear lens or frosted, and will I see the LED dots?
Clear lens, in thermoplastic PBT, with a silver housing. A clear lens on a 25 degree narrow beam gives you a crisper edge on the light pool than a frosted lens would, which is what you want for accent work. In an open, unshielded fixture where the lamp face is at eye level, a clear lens is also brighter to look straight into.
10) Will this Satco PAR20 work in a three-way lamp socket?
No. The S29402 is not a three-way lamp. In a three-way socket it will run at a single output level rather than stepping, and the switch positions will not do what the fixture expects. For a three-way fixture you need a lamp built for it.
11) Does the Satco S29402 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. It is not DLC approved, so it will not clear a rebate program that requires a DLC listing. If the rebate is the reason for the project, confirm the program's lamp requirements before you specify it. The lamp is FCC compliant, which covers radio interference, not rebate eligibility.
