    1) Will the Satco S39021 LED downlight fit an existing 4 inch recessed can?
    It's built for a 4 inch recessed opening, with a 5.69 inch overall trim diameter that covers the ceiling cut and a 2.75 inch height that has to clear inside the housing or the joist bay. Measure your can depth before ordering.
    2) Does this Satco downlight need an existing can, or can it be installed without a housing?
    It's a direct wire unit, so it connects to the branch circuit through a connector or adapter rather than screwing into a lamp socket. That makes it a canless-style ceiling mount as well as a retrofit into an existing housing. Wiring is 120V line voltage, so a junction connection is required at the ceiling.
    3) What color light does the S39021 put out, and can I change it?
    Fixed 5000K daylight white. It is not CCT selectable and not wattage selectable, so what you order is what you get. If you're mixing it with warmer 2700K or 3000K trims on the same ceiling, the difference will be obvious, so standardize the run.
    4) Is 490 lumens at 7 watts enough to replace what's in my 4 inch cans now?
    490 lumens at 7 watts is roughly a 40 to 50 watt incandescent equivalent in a small aperture. For closets, hallways, baths and accent runs that's fine. For a kitchen or open ceiling on wide spacing, plan on tighter fixture spacing or step up to a larger aperture.
    5) Will this Satco downlight work on a dimmer switch?
    The S39021 is dimmable on a 120V, 60Hz circuit. Use an LED-rated dimmer and keep the total connected load within the dimmer's LED wattage rating; at 7W per fixture you can run a long run on one dimmer.
    6) Does this downlight meet California Title 24?
    Yes, it is Title 24 compliant, and it is also FCC compliant and RoHS compliant. That covers the usual spec-check boxes on California residential and multi-family lighting submittals.
    7) Can the LED be replaced in this fixture when it burns out?
    No. The light source is an integrated LED, not a lamp in a socket, so there's no bulb to change. Rated life is 40,000 hours, and at end of life the whole downlight is swapped. For a property manager standardizing across units, that means stocking spare fixtures rather than spare lamps.
