1) Is the Schlage 09-447 a complete L9040 privacy mortise lock, or just the lever trim?
Trim only. The 09-447 is an L Series trim pack for the L9040 privacy mortise lock, sold as a replacement part, so it dresses a lock case you already have in the door or are buying separately. If the case still works and the lever or plate is damaged or you are changing the look, this is the part you want. If the mortise case itself is worn out, order the L9040 lock instead.
2) Do I have to specify left hand or right hand when ordering Schlage 09-447 lever trim?
Only on the 12 design, which is ordered as 12 Lever Left Hand or 12 Lever Right Hand. The 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17, 18 and Latitude (LAT) designs are ordered without a hand. To call the hand, stand on the outside of the door: hinges on your left is left hand, hinges on your right is right hand.
3) What do I need to specify to order the right Schlage 09-447 trim pack?
Three choices decide the part number: lever design, escutcheon, and finish. Escutcheon is either L, the full face escutcheon, or N. The full face plate covers a taller area of the stile than the N plate, so if you are replacing trim on one door in a matched run, order the same escutcheon letter that is already on the other openings or the doors will not read the same from the corridor.
4) I need L Series lever trim in oil rubbed bronze to match the rest of my building. Does the Schlage 09-447 come in it?
Oil rubbed bronze (613) is one of eleven finishes. The full run is 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 609 Antique Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome, 629 Bright Stainless Steel and 630 Satin Stainless Steel. Those three digit codes are the BHMA finish standard, so ordering by number rather than by name is how you keep a fleet of doors consistent when the hardware on them came from more than one maker.
5) Can I match Schlage L Series lever trim to the Von Duprin exit devices and other locks in the same building?
Suiting across the opening types is built into the line. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. A corridor running an exit device on the stair door, a mortise lock on the office, and an L9040 privacy set on the restroom can carry one lever design and one finish across all of it. Settle the lever design first, then order it through every opening type on the job.
6) Do Schlage L Series levers meet ADA requirements?
The L Series meets ADA requirements, and all levers in the line with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. Swapping knob trim for one of these lever designs on an existing L9040 privacy opening is the usual way a facility brings a non-compliant door into line, since operable hardware has to work without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist.
7) Is Schlage L Series trim rated for a high traffic commercial building, or is it residential grade?
Commercial. In the field, the letter F and the UL symbol on the latch front are how you confirm the lock in the door is the listed version before you touch the trim.
