1) What is the Schlage 09-446 trim pack, and does it include the lock?
The 09-446 is lever trim, not a lock. It supplies the lever and escutcheon for an L9010 passage mortise lock and is sold as a replacement part, so the mortise case, latch and front stay in the door. Passage means there is no cylinder and no keying involved: the lever retracts the latch from either side at all times and the door never locks. If the mortise body itself is worn out, or the opening needs to secure, trim alone will not get you there.
2) Will Schlage 09-446 L Series trim work on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
Both figures line up. The 09-446 trim is specified for 1-3/4 inch door thickness and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise setup. Anything other than 1-3/4 inches has to be handled when the trim is specified, since the L Series carries door thickness options beyond the standard rather than one part covering the whole range.
3) Do I have to specify handing when I order Schlage L Series 09-446 lever trim?
Only on the 12 lever, which is ordered Right Hand or Left Hand. The other designs offered on the 09-446 trim, 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17, 18 and the Latitude lever, are ordered without a hand. Get the hand wrong on a 12 and the lever sweeps the wrong way on the door, so check the existing lever before you order a replacement.
4) What is the difference between the N escutcheon and the L full face escutcheon on Schlage L Series trim?
Two escutcheon choices come on the 09-446 trim: N escutcheon and L full face escutcheon. The full face L covers a larger area of the door face, which is the one to take when you are swapping out older trim and want existing prep, marks or finish shadow covered. The N is the smaller plate. On a building where the other openings already carry one or the other, match what is there rather than mixing the two down a corridor.
5) Can I get Schlage L Series passage trim in a finish that matches the doors I already have?
The 09-446 trim runs across eleven BHMA finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. 626 and 630 are the two you will find on most existing commercial openings. If you are matching a fleet of doors, order by the BHMA number off the old trim rather than by the finish name, since names vary between manufacturers and the number does not.
6) Will Schlage L Series levers match the Von Duprin exit devices on my other openings?
They suite. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. So a corridor that runs a passage mortise lock at one opening, an exit device at the stair door and an electronic lock at another can carry the same lever design and the same finish end to end. That is the usual reason a spec calls for L Series trim on a door that only needs to push open.
7) Is the Schlage L9010 mortise lock Grade 1 and ADA compliant for a school or hospital corridor?
The L9000 mortise locks this trim mounts to are tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Grade 1 Security and Operational, and the series is stated to exceed Grade 1 security and operational standards. The L Series meets ADA requirements and meets the Buy American Act, which is what gets asked on public and institutional work. For California jobs, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code.
8) A lever broke off an existing Schlage L9010 passage lock. Can I just replace the trim instead of the whole lock?
That is what the 09-446 is built for. It is a replacement trim pack for the L9010 passage mortise lock, so a sound mortise case stays in the door and only the lever and escutcheon get swapped. Match three things off the old trim: finish, lever design and escutcheon type. If the existing lever is a 12, note the hand as well. The inside levers use a locking lever bushing, so do not go hunting for exposed set screws on the rose.
9) What do I need to specify to order the correct Schlage 09-446 trim pack?
Three choices, four if you take a 12 lever: the finish, the lever design (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17, 18 or Latitude), the escutcheon (N or the L full face), and the hand on a 12.
