1) What does the Schlage 09-449 trim pack include, and does it come with the mortise lock?
The 09-449 is L Series lever trim, sold as a replacement part for a lock already in the door. It covers the L9070, L9080 and L9465 keyed mortise functions, and you order it by lever design, escutcheon style and finish. The lock case and the cylinder are separate items, so if the lock body itself has failed this pack won't put the door back in service. The trim is dimensioned for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
2) Will the Schlage 09-449 L Series trim fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The 09-449 trim pack is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial leaf thickness. Schlage carries door thickness as an L Series option, so a 1-3/8 inch opening or anything heavier than 1-3/4 takes trim specified for that thickness instead. Measure the leaf at the lock edge first, because thickness is what drives spindle and mounting screw length.
3) I'm replacing damaged levers on an existing Schlage mortise lock. Will the 09-449 line up with the prep already in my door?
Dimensioned for a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door, which is the standard mortise prep on a commercial opening. Because the 09-449 is replacement trim for the L9070, L9080 and L9465 functions, it goes back onto the lock case that's already in the door rather than needing new prep. The part to get right is the escutcheon: it's ordered either as L, the full face escutcheon, or as N, so match what is on the door now.
4) Do I have to specify handing when I order Schlage L Series 09-449 lever trim?
Only for the 12 lever. That design is called out by hand, ordered right hand or left hand, so you need to know the door's swing before the order goes in. Designs such as the 01, 03, 06, 17, 18 and the Latitude are ordered by design number, finish and escutcheon with no hand attached.
5) Can I get Schlage L Series replacement levers that match the finish on the rest of my building?
Finish choices on the 09-449 trim pack include 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. On commercial openings 626 and 630 are the two you'll run into most often. Match the lever design number as well as the finish, though. An 03 lever sitting next to an 18 reads as a mismatch down a corridor even when the finish is identical.
6) What is the difference between the L and N escutcheon options on Schlage L Series trim?
Two escutcheon styles are offered on the 09-449 pack: L, the full face escutcheon, and N. Both run across the lever designs and the finish range, so the choice doesn't restrict which lever you can have. On a replacement, order the style already fitted to the lock, since the plate has to cover the prep in the door and sit consistently with the other openings on the floor.
7) Can I use the same lever design on my Schlage mortise locks and my Von Duprin exit device trim?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. So the design you settle on for the 09-449 trim pack, whether that's an 01, an 18 or the Latitude, carries across the mortise locks and the exit device trim in the same building. That is usually the reason a facility standardizes on one design number in the first place.
8) Is Schlage L Series mortise hardware fire rated for a 3 hour door?
UL listed for 3 hour fire doors, with L9076 and L9077 the two exceptions in the series. The 09-449 trim pack serves the L9070, L9080 and L9465 functions, none of which are on that exception list. The UL and cUL listing covers A label single doors to 4' x 10' and pairs to 8' x 10'; on any given lock, the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are what confirm it.
9) Does Schlage L Series keyed mortise hardware meet ANSI/BHMA Grade 1?
L9000 mortise locks are tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 to Grade 1 security and operational, and the series is also ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and UL listed. One thing that catches specifiers out on a keyed opening: with interchangeable core cylinders the security rating drops to Grade 2, while a concealed shell cylinder holds A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security. 10) Do Schlage L Series levers meet ADA requirements?
Lever trim is what belongs on an accessible route rather than a knob, and the L Series meets ADA requirements. Every design offered on the 09-449 pack is a lever, from the 01 and 03 through the 17 and 18 to the Latitude, so the accessibility question is settled whichever design you pick to match the building.
11) Levers on our classroom doors keep getting snapped off. Is new Schlage trim enough or do we need something different?
Replacement trim will put the door back in service, and the 09-449 covers the L9070, L9080 and L9465 keyed mortise functions.
