1) Will the Schlage L9040 privacy mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The L9040 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. On a 1-3/8 inch door you need a different lock entirely, and a mortise case that size (4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches) generally will not fit a thin stile anyway. No handing to specify. The L9040 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand opening. What you do specify is the lever design (13 choices, including 12 Lever which comes as a distinct left hand or right hand part), the rose or escutcheon (A and B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, N escutcheon), and the finish.
3) How do you get into a bathroom locked with a Schlage L9040 in an emergency?
From the corridor side you pop the emergency button out of the outside trim, put the emergency thumbturn into the access hole behind it, and rotate to release.
