Schlage L9050P 18B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9050 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep it is built for. The L9050 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset and is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors, with a lock case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches and an armor front of 1-1/4 x 8 inches. If your door is already mortised to the standard ANSI prep for a 2-3/4 inch backset commercial mortise lock, the case drops in. Doors thicker or thinner than 1-3/4 inches need a different door thickness option specified.
2) What does the Entrance/Office function on a Schlage L9050 actually do at the door?
The latchbolt retracts from either lever until someone locks the outside, and locking is done either with the key from outside or with the inside thumbturn. Once outside is locked, only the key outside or the inside lever will retract the latch. The inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. This is the office door function: staff can lock the door from inside and leave it locked, unlike a storeroom function that stays locked all the time.
3) Is there a deadbolt on the Schlage L9050?
No. The L9050 is a non-deadbolt function, latchbolt only, secured by a deadlocking auxiliary latch when the door closes. If you need a deadbolt on the opening, this is the wrong function within the L9000 family. It is also a single cylinder lock, so there is a key outside and a thumbturn inside, not a key both sides.
4) Can the Schlage L9050 go on a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise lock is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and Schlage lists UL/cUL for A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol appear on the latch front to show the listing. It is tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 Security and Operational, and it meets ADA requirements.
5) Do I have to specify handing when ordering an L9050 lever mortise lock?
Yes, the L9050 is a handed lock, so you need to give the hand of the opening when you order. Note that some competing mortise bodies are field reversible instead, such as the BEST 45H public entrance lockbody and the Falcon MA101 passage lock, both listed as field reversible. With the L9050 you specify the hand up front.
6) What cylinder comes with the Schlage L9050, and can I get it prepped for interchangeable core?
Standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. Four cylinder choices are offered: P for the conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, L for less conventional cylinder, J for Schlage FSIC less core, and B for SFIC less prep core. Grade matters here. With the conventional or concealed shell cylinder the lock holds A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security; with FSIC interchangeable core it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. If you want a UL437 listed cylinder, specify a Primus 20-500 Series.
7) I need all the office doors in one building to open on one key. Can the L9050 be ordered keyed alike?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: keyed different, which is the standard, keyed alike for a group of locks that should share a key, or no cylinder at all if you are supplying your own cores or having them keyed locally. There is also a free text field for special cylinder and keying requirements, which is where master key system details or a non-C keyway go. All L Series levers also suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so the trim can match across an entire building.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage L9050 entrance/office mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match in function: it is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, built for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L9050 is likewise a Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. Both give you a keyed outside lever that can be locked while the inside lever stays free.
9) I need a mortise lock that stays locked from the outside at all times instead of entrance/office - what should I order?
Go to a storeroom function instead. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option. The Schlage L9050 is an entrance/office function where the outside lever is locked and unlocked by thumbturn or key, so it can be left unlocked - a storeroom function has no thumbturn and the outside lever remains locked until keyed.
10) Is the Schlage L9050 the same thing as a Schlage CO-100 or LE mortise lock?
No. The L9050 is a mechanical keyed mortise lock with no electronics. The Schlage CO-100 mortise is a standalone electronic lock with a keypad reader, Grade 1, privacy function, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled Grade 2 mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors. Choose the L9050 when you want a keyed mechanical opening with no credential management.
11) Which strike ships with the Schlage L9050 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
The standard strike is the Schlage 10-072, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. That is the common ANSI mortise strike footprint, so it lines up with frames already prepped for a square corner mortise strike. Frames with a radius corner cutout will need a curved corner strike instead.
12) Can I use an escutcheon instead of a rose on the L9050, and does that change the door thickness I can use?
Four trim choices are offered: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, and N wrought escutcheon. Thickness range does differ by trim. The L cast/forged escutcheon is available on 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon on 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Lever design is the 18 lever on both sides, with matching rose and finish.
13) What is a good alternative to the Schlage L9050 if I need the same office function in a Grade 1 mortise lock from another brand?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the closest match in the comparable range: a heavy duty Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, same as the L9050. If the opening actually needs a classroom function instead, look at the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or the Cal-Royal NM8070, both Grade 1 mortise classroom locks for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a storeroom door that must stay locked at all times, the Cal-Royal NM8080 or the Accentra 8805FL are the storeroom function equivalents.
14) Is the Schlage L9050 an electronic or access control lock?
No, the L9050 is a straight mechanical keyed mortise lock, no power and no credential reader. If the opening needs credentials, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz prox reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the Schlage CO-100 mortise is a Grade 1 standalone keypad lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 RFID mortise lockset in classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) Is the Schlage L9050 tough enough for a high traffic government or school office door, and does it meet Buy American?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for both security and operational, with the case built from cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. Schlage lists it as meeting the Buy American Act, and it also carries ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40, Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings. A security blocking hub prevents picking by pulling the levers off.
16) The opening does not need to lock at all - what is the simpler mortise lock to use in place of an L9050?
Use a passage or non-keyed office function. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon that is non-keyed on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Schlage L9050 is a keyed single cylinder lock, so it carries a cylinder you would not need on a passage opening.
17) What should I use instead of an L9050 on a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening?
Look at the TownSteel MRX-L-01, a stainless steel Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the MRX-A-01 with ligature resistant arch trim, both passage function. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless. The Schlage L9050 uses a standard 18 lever, which is not a ligature resistant trim.
18) Is a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt an alternative to the Schlage L9050?
No - it is a different type of part. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset with no lever trim or latchbolt operation, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is likewise a deadbolt function mortise lock. The Schlage L9050 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office lock whose latchbolt is operated by the levers, with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. If you want both, you need a lock body with a deadbolt function rather than an L9050.
19) Which mortise lock should I standardize on for a dormitory corridor instead of the L9050?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt in the 7900 Series. It adds a deadbolt that the L9050 does not have - the Schlage L9050 is an entrance/office non-deadbolt function where the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn and the inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
20) My opening needs a privacy lock, not an entrance/office lock - what mortise lock replaces the L9050?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Both are intended for bed and bath openings. The Schlage L9050 is a keyed entrance/office lock with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, which is more lock than a privacy opening needs.
21) I need an electrified mortise lock for access control - what is the counterpart to the L9050?
The Command Access ML190 Series is a motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in a heavy-duty storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. The Schlage L9050 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, so it cannot be remotely released.
22) What mortise lock works on a thinner door than the Schlage L9050 takes?
The Schlage L9050 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door. The Alarm Lock DL3500CR covers 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors as a Grade 1 classroom electronic mortise lock, and the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise body covers 1-3/8 inch and over. Match the lock body's stated door thickness range to the leaf you are working on before ordering.
23) I want interchangeable core keying - does the L9050 support it or should I look at another brand?
The Schlage L9050 can be ordered with an SFIC less prep core, a Schlage FSIC less core, less conventional cylinder, or a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so it covers IC keying directly. If you are matching an existing non-Schlage IC system, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option, though it is a storeroom rather than entrance/office function.
24) What finishes does the Schlage L9050 lever mortise lock come in?
Twelve finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. For commercial corridors most specs land on 626 satin chrome or 630 satin stainless. Lever, rose and finish are the same on both sides of the door.
25) Do the Emtek 3102 or 3104 mortise entrance locksets work as a substitute for a Schlage L9050?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis and 3104 Hamilton mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - they have no working latch or keyed operation. The Schlage L9050 is a keyed single cylinder entrance/office mortise lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside is locked. Use the Emtek dummy trims only on an inactive leaf.
