Schlage L9056P 02B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Entrance/Office function on the Schlage L9056 actually do day to day?
Staff lock the outside lever with the inside thumbturn or a key, and it stays locked until somebody unlocks it the same way. It does not relock on its own. With the outside locked, entry is by key from outside; the inside lever is always free, so anyone inside walks out without unlocking anything. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes so the latch cannot be carded. This is the office door lock people leave unlocked all day and lock at close of business.
2) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering a Schlage L9056?
Yes. The L9056 is a handed lock, so you need to determine the door hand before ordering. Stand outside the door (the key side): if the hinges are on your right and it swings away from you, that is right hand. Getting it wrong on a mortise lock is not a field-fix on the trim side.
3) Will the Schlage L9056 drop into an existing mortise pocket and reuse my old strike?
The lock case is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches with a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front, which is the standard ANSI mortise pocket, and the backset is 2-3/4 inches. It ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame has that square-corner ANSI strike cutout, the supplied strike lands in the same prep. Frames prepped for a curved-lip or T-strike will need the strike opening reworked.
4) Can I get the Schlage L9056 keyed into my existing building master key system?
Yes, and the cylinder option is the ordering decision. Seven choices: P conventional 6-pin in C keyway (the standard build), L less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own, J Schlage full-size interchangeable core less core, R FSIC with core in S123 keyway, T FSIC with construction core, B small format IC less prep core, and H 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core. If the building runs SFIC, order B or H and stack your own cores. Note the grade tradeoff: the lock is Grade 1 security with a conventional cylinder, Grade 2 with FSIC cores and Grade 3 with SFIC cores.
5) Is the Schlage L9056 approved for a fire rated office door?
The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions in the family are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9056), and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors to 4 x 10 feet and pairs to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify a listed unit on site. It is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and meets ADA requirements.
6) I need the office lock to relock itself automatically, not stay unlocked. Is the L9056 the wrong function?
If you want the door secure at all times with key-only entry from outside, the L9056 is the wrong pick. Its outside lever stays locked or unlocked until someone changes it by key or thumbturn. Storeroom function is the one that keeps the outside lever always locked. Cross-brand, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option, and the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with the Arcadia lever. Stay with the L9056 only if you actually want staff able to leave the office unlocked during business hours.
7) Will the Schlage L9056 match the other Schlage hardware and the Von Duprin exit devices already in my building?
Yes on both counts. L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so the lever and rose design carries across the mechanical locks, the electrified trim and the exit device trim on the same corridor. Finish is where you match the rest: twelve are offered, from 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless (the usual commercial specs) through 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 629 bright stainless and 643E aged bronze.
8) Does the Schlage L9056 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt function, latchbolt only, with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed. That auxiliary latch is what resists carding, but it is not a bolt into the frame. If the opening needs a separate throw bolt, a mortise deadbolt like the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset goes above the lock, or you pick an L Series function that includes a deadbolt.
9) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9056 entrance/office mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match from another maker: it is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lockset with the same Entrance/Office function and an auxiliary deadlatch, built for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9056 is also a Grade 1 mortise lock in the Entrance/Office function on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Where they part company is the cylinder and trim program - the L9056 is ordered across seven cylinder options including conventional 6-pin C keyway, Schlage FSIC and SFIC prep, so a facility already keyed into a Schlage system stays in that system with the L9056.
10) Is the Baldwin 6301 mortise lock a drop-in replacement for a Schlage L9056?
No - the backsets differ. The Baldwin 6301 is an Entrance/Apartment mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inch and over, offered knob by knob or, as the 6301LS, lever by lever. The L9056 is cut for a 2-3/4 inch backset. A door mortised for one will not accept the other without re-prepping the edge, so confirm the backset on the existing pocket before ordering either.
11) What replaces a Schlage L9056 when the door needs to be opened with a code or credential instead of a key?
Several electronic mortise locks cover the same opening. The Schlage CO-100-MS is a Grade 1 standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, heavy duty. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile enabled deadbolt with LED, Greenwich trim, right hand, rated 3 hours for fire. The Accentra NTM623-NR nexTouch Generation 3 is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override. The L9056 is a mechanical lock with no electronics.
12) For a behavioral health or psychiatric unit, what mortise lock is used instead of a standard lever lock?
Ligature resistant trim is the deciding factor. The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless steel ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so where the opening also has to lock, the L9056 with its Entrance/Office function and Omega lever is the keyed option to weigh against them.
13) For an aluminum storefront or narrow stile glass door, does the L9056 work?
No - the L9056 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 4-7/16 inch by 6-1/16 inch by 1 inch case, which a narrow stile will not accept. The Kaba Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock, and the Alarm Lock DL1300NW Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock with keypad is made for Adams Rite deadlatches. The Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock for wide stile applications.
14) Which mortise lock should be specified when the opening has to release on an access control signal?
An electrified lock body, not the mechanical L9056. The Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. The L9056 is not an electronic lock and is operated by lever, key and thumbturn only.
15) What mortise lock covers an intruder or lockdown function that the L9056 does not?
The L9056 unlocks and locks the outside lever from the thumbturn or key, with the inside lever always free for egress - it has no dedicated lockdown mode. The BEST 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody in intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology for 1-3/4 inch doors. The TownSteel FME-2000 is the Grade 1 heavy duty classroom RFID version without the intruder designation.
16) Should I use a mortise lock like the L9056 or a cylindrical lockset on an office door?
Go mortise when the door is a high-traffic commercial opening and you want the auxiliary deadlatch, the heavy case and the option to add a thumbturn on the inside. The L9056 is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial lock with a cold rolled steel case, zinc dichromate plated, in a 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch body. The catch is prep: mortise needs a pocket routed into the door edge, so if your doors are already bored for a cylindrical lock, converting is a door replacement or a heavy retrofit, not a swap.
17) What lever and rose do I get on the Schlage L9056, and can I change them?
The Omega lever is the design on this build, with the same lever, rose and finish on both sides of the door plus matching latch and strike. Four trim choices on the rose axis: A and B wrought roses, the L cast/forged escutcheon (1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors), and the N wrought escutcheon (1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors). A locking lever bushing keeps exposed screws off the inside lever. Roses are the smaller round trim; escutcheons are the full plate, which is what you want if you are covering up old trim marks on a retrofit.
18) Does the Schlage L9056 need power or wiring run to the door?
No power, no wiring. The L9056 is a mechanical lock, keyed with a single cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. If you need the door released from a card reader or an access control panel, that is a different lock: the Schlage LEMD ENGAGE wireless mortise lock has a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the BEST 45HW is a wired electromechanical mortise lock that auto-detects 12V/24V.
19) Can staff always get out of an office with an L9056 on the door, even when it is locked?
Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, no matter how the outside is set, so a single turn of the lever gets someone out. That is what lets it sit on an egress path, and the lock meets ADA requirements with all levers having a return to door of 1/2 inch or less, which the California Referenced Standards Code accepts.
20) Does the Schlage L9056 qualify for a Buy American Act job?
Yes, the L Series mortise locks meet BAA (Buy American Act), which is what a government or federally funded institutional spec usually asks for. The line also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings if the job is in a high velocity hurricane zone.
21) Can I upgrade the cylinder on a Schlage L9056 to a high security key system?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is optional on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder, which is the route if you need patented key control and drill and pick resistance on a tenant or office suite door. If you go that way, order the lock less cylinder (the L option) or FSIC less core (J) and supply the cylinder to your keying schedule.
22) Will an Alarm Lock Trilogy mortise lock fit the same door as a Schlage L9056?
Check the door thickness first. The Alarm Lock DL2700CR Trilogy T2 and the DL3500CR are Grade 1 electronic mortise locks with classroom function built for doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. The L9056 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door, which falls inside that band, so a 1-3/4 inch door can take either. The functions are not the same, though - both Trilogy models listed are classroom function while the L9056 is Entrance/Office.
23) What is a simpler mortise lock for a door that does not need a key at all?
Drop to a passage or non-keyed office function and the cylinder goes away entirely. The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors. For a door that only needs to latch, the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose and the 3810E the same function with escutcheon, both 2-3/4 inch backset. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating. The L9056 is a keyed lock with a single cylinder, so it is the choice only where the opening actually needs to be secured.
24) Can a Sargent 4874 be used in place of a Schlage L9056?
They do different jobs. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset - bolt only, with no latch and no lever operation. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side, with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. The 4874 would be specified alongside separate operating trim, not as a substitute for the lockset.
25) The bathroom and bedroom doors need a lock but not a key. What takes the place of the L9056 there?
Privacy function covers those doors. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The L9056 is a keyed single cylinder lock, which is more than a privacy opening needs.
26) Is a BEST 45H mortise lock body an alternative to the Schlage L9056?
It is a different function and a different scope of supply. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation - a lock body, sold apart from the trim. The 45HCAINL is a heavy duty lock body in intruder function. The L9056 is handed and ships with the same lever, rose and finish for both sides of the door along with the coordinating latch and strike, and takes the 10-072 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip.
27) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an option for a commercial office door?
They will not lock. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - fixed trim with no latch operation, used on inactive leaves and closet doors. The L9056 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty keyed lock whose latchbolt operates from either side and whose outside lever locks by key or thumbturn.
28) What mortise lock handles a dormitory or corridor door where the L9056 is not the right function?
The Sargent 7925 is a heavy duty Grade 1 dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. That deadbolt is the difference: the L9056 is a non-deadbolt lock relying on a latchbolt that the auxiliary latch deadlocks when the door closes. Corridor and dormitory openings that need a throwable bolt take the 7925 rather than the L9056.
29) How does the Schlage LE Series mortise lock compare with the L9056 for an apartment or office door?
The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment use, for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 3 hour fire rating. The L9056 is a Grade 1 mechanical Entrance/Office lock, also for 1-3/4 inch doors, keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard. Both suite together in the L Series family, so a building running L Series trim can mix mechanical and mobile-enabled openings without changing lever design.
30) What is the difference between the Cal-Royal NM8050 and the Baldwin 6310 for an entry door?
Function and backset separate them. The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 Entrance/Office mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, matching the Entrance/Office function of the L9056. The Baldwin 6310 is an Entry/Storeroom mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch and over, offered knob by knob or as the 6310190RRLS in a right hand reverse lever by lever configuration. The L9056 runs a 2-3/4 inch backset like the standard commercial prep the NM8050 targets.
31) Which mortise lock should be used where the door has no reliable power source but needs credential access?
The Dormakaba PowerPlex P2066 Series mortise lock runs in the PowerPlex 2000 Series without hard wiring to the opening. The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card lock in a back to back mortise configuration, and the LX-I-M002 Saffire is a BHMA Grade 2 electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access. Against all three, the L9056 is a purely mechanical Grade 1 lock keyed to a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, with no power requirement of any kind.
32) Is a Codelocks CL2255 suitable where a Schlage L9056 is specified?
The duty ratings differ. The Codelocks CL2255 is a medium duty electronic tubular mortise latch in the CL2000 Series with a brushed steel finish. The L9056 is a heavy duty commercial Grade 1 mortise lock with a CRS body finished in zinc dichromate plating. For an office or entry door carrying commercial traffic, the heavy duty rating is the one to hold the spec to.
33) The opening only needs a deadbolt with no lever - what takes the place of the L9056?
The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock with no handing, sold in a single pack, and the Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad for doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. Either is bolt-only. The L9056 is a handed non-deadbolt lock whose latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked.
34) Does a Sargent 130KB thumbturn substitute for the thumbturn side of a Schlage L9056?
The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn from the 8200 Series and the 130W is a standard duty thumbturn with a round backplate from the 7800 Series. Both are trim pieces for their own manufacturer's mortise lock bodies. The L9056 is a complete keyed mortise lockset whose thumbturn unlocks the outside lever as part of its own trim package, supplied with matching lever, rose and finish on both sides.
35) Does the Falcon MESC600DT work as trim on a Schlage L9056?
No. The Falcon MESC600DT is a dummy escutcheon lever trim made for M9900 Series exit devices and carries a fire rating in that application. It is exit device trim, not mortise lock trim. The L9056 takes its own trim - Omega lever with a choice of wrought rose, cast or forged escutcheon, or wrought escutcheon - and ships with matching lever, rose and finish on both faces.
