Schlage L9056P 17B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Schlage L9056 and a regular office lock, and when would I use it?
The L9056 is an entrance/office function with automatic unlocking. Both levers retract the latchbolt until the outside lever is locked by key or by the inside thumbturn. Once locked, only the key outside or the inside lever retracts the latch, and the inside lever is always free for egress. The automatic unlocking part means it releases back to the unlocked state rather than staying locked indefinitely, so an office or a suite entrance can be secured overnight and returned to free passage without anyone hunting for a key. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. If you want a door that stays locked outside at all times and is never unlocked by trim, use a storeroom function instead, such as the Cal-Royal NM8080.
2) Is the Schlage L9056 handed, and do I need to specify left or right?
Handing matters here. The L9056 is a handed lock, so you need to know which way the door swings and which side it's hinged before ordering. Stand outside the opening: if the hinges are on your right, it's right hand or right hand reverse depending on whether the door swings away from you or toward you.
3) Will the Schlage L9056 work with my existing Schlage keyway, or can I get it less cylinder?
Cylinder options run seven ways on the L9056. Standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. If you're keying into an existing system, order L (less conventional cylinder) or J (Schlage FSIC less core) and supply your own. For interchangeable core shops there's B (SFIC less core prep), H (7-pin SFIC prep with construction core), T (FSIC with construction core), and R (FSIC with core in the S123 keyway). Note the grade tradeoff: with the conventional cylinder the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, with FSIC cores it's Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it's Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security.
4) Can I use the Schlage L9056 on a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 series latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you confirm the listing on the part in your hand.
5) Will the Schlage L9056 latch drop into my existing mortise strike, or do I need to cut the frame?
The lock ships with a 10-072 strike measuring 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. That's the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint, so if the frame already has a mortise lock in it with the same 2-3/4 inch backset, the strike prep normally carries over. What decides it is the lip length: 1-3/16 inches suits a flush frame condition, and a deeper reveal or an applied stop needs a longer lip so the latch has a ramp to ride.
6) Does the Schlage L9056 meet ANSI Grade 1 and ADA for a school or hospital?
The L9000 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Grade 1 Security and Operational, and the latch carries A156.13-2012 Series 1000 certification. It meets ADA requirements, and under the California Referenced Standards Code all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply. It also holds ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and meets the Buy American Act, which matters on government work. Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings apply as well.
7) Will the Schlage L9056 match the Von Duprin exit devices already on my other doors?
It will. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. For a property manager or facility standardizing a building, that means the lever and finish on an office door can be carried across to the stairwell exit devices without a visual mismatch. The L Series also suites across tubular, exit device, and multipoint locks.
8) Does the Schlage L9056 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt on the L9056. It's a non-deadbolt entrance/office function, so security comes from the latchbolt plus an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed. If the opening needs a real deadbolt, look at a separate mortise deadbolt like the Sargent 4874 double cylinder with a 2-3/4 inch backset, or a mortise lock function that carries one, such as the Sargent 7925 dormitory exit function with single cylinder deadbolt.
9) The door is 1-5/8 inch thick - can I still use a Schlage L9056?
The Schlage L9056 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner leaves in the 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch range, the Alarm Lock Trilogy locks cover that span: the DL2700CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with classroom function and weatherproof design, and the DL3500CR is a Grade 1 Trilogy electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes and classroom function. Both are keypad locks rather than key-only, and both are classroom function rather than Entrance/Office.
10) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9056 entrance/office mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lockset in the Entrance/Office function with an auxiliary deadlatch, and it is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. That matches the Schlage L9056 on function, grade, and door thickness: the L9056 is a Grade 1 Entrance/Office mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both give you a latchbolt that the lever retracts from either side until the outside lever is locked. Handing, lever design, cylinder prep, and finish still have to be specified separately on either one.
11) I need a mortise lock that stays locked at all times instead of one an occupant can leave unlocked - what should I order?
Order a storeroom function instead of the L9056. The Schlage L9056 is an Entrance/Office lock, where the outside lever stays locked only until someone releases it with the inside thumbturn or a key, so an occupant can leave the opening free. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. In a storeroom function the outside lever is always locked and entry is by key only.
12) The opening is a classroom door - is the L9056 the right function or do I need something else?
A classroom door normally calls for a classroom function rather than the Entrance/Office function the Schlage L9056 provides, because Entrance/Office lets the inside thumbturn control the outside lever. For Grade 1 mechanical classroom mortise locks, the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both share the L9056 1-3/4 inch door thickness, so the door prep depth is the same conversation.
13) Will a Sargent 7925 work as a substitute for a Schlage L9056?
They are not the same function. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, and the Schlage L9056 is an Entrance/Office lock whose latchbolt is deadlocked by an auxiliary latch rather than by a deadbolt. The Sargent adds a deadbolt to the case and follows corridor and dormitory behavior; the L9056 is a non-deadbolt function where the inside lever is always free for immediate egress. If the opening was specified for a deadbolt-carrying dormitory function, the L9056 will not satisfy it.
14) For a behavioral health room, should I use the L9056 or a ligature resistant mortise lock?
Use a ligature resistant lockset. The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel, passage function, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All are passage function, where the Schlage L9056 is a keyed Entrance/Office lock with an Omega lever, so the L9056 offers key control the passage sets do not and the trim profile is conventional rather than ligature resistant.
15) Is a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body a drop-in replacement for a Schlage L9056?
No, the door prep differs. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body is a 2-1/2 inch backset lock, offered knob by knob or lever by lever, for doors 1-3/4 inch and over. The Schlage L9056 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 inch by 6-1/16 inch by 1 inch case. The quarter-inch backset difference moves the lever centerline relative to the door edge, so the two do not swap into the same pocket without rework. The Baldwin is also an Entrance/Apartment function against the L9056 Entrance/Office function.
16) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage L9056 mortise lock?
Four decisions, and none of them are optional. Hand, because the lock is handed. Cylinder, from seven choices including conventional 6-pin C keyway, less cylinder, and the FSIC and SFIC prep options. Finish, from twelve: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. And the trim, either an A or B wrought rose, the L cast/forged escutcheon, or the N wrought escutcheon. The lever design on this one is the Omega.
17) What is the Schlage L9056 lock case made of, and will it hold up in a high traffic entrance?
The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, rated heavy duty and built for commercial use. A security blocking hub prevents lock picking by removing the levers, and the lock exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards. Grade 1 is the highest ANSI/BHMA tier and is what a main entrance, a corridor, or any opening cycled hard all day should be carrying.
18) What is a comparable Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lock to the Schlage L9056?
The closest straight equivalent is the Cal-Royal NM8050, a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. Where the two differ commercially is the keying ecosystem: the L9056 comes standard in the Schlage C keyway with FSIC and SFIC prep options, so it drops into an existing Schlage master key system. If you're not tied to a Schlage keyway, the NM8050 covers the same function on the same door thickness.
19) I need keypad or card access on a mortise door instead of a key. What should I look at instead of the Schlage L9056?
The L9056 is purely mechanical, no electronics in it at all. For credential access on the same kind of mortise prep, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating. For a keypad, the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. Worth noting that the Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD mobile enabled mortise lock is Grade 2, not Grade 1, if your spec calls for Grade 1.
20) Is a restroom or bedroom door a place for the L9056, or is there a simpler mortise lock for that?
A restroom or bedroom door wants a privacy function, not the keyed Entrance/Office function of the Schlage L9056, which ships with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S in the 3800 Series is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The Hager matches the L9056 2-3/4 inch backset, so the case pocket location on the door edge carries over.
21) The door never needs to lock - what mortise lock do I use instead of the L9056?
For an opening that only needs the latch held, use a passage function and skip the cylinder entirely. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock in the MA Series with field reversible operation and a fire rating. The Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks in the 3800 Series with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, the 3810S with a rose and the 3810E with an escutcheon. The Schlage L9056 is keyed with a single cylinder, so it carries hardware a passage opening does not use. The Falcon is field reversible, while the L9056 is a handed lock.
22) Can I get the same entrance/office function on a keypad or credential lock instead of a keyed one?
Yes, in electronic form. The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions, Grade 2, 3 hour fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card mortise lock in the E-Plex 5X86 Series. The Schlage L9056 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, so credential management, audit trail and battery service are considerations that only come with the electronic options.
23) What is the difference between the Schlage L9056 and an Emtek 3102 Memphis mortise entrance lockset?
The Emtek 3102 Memphis is a dummy function - it is trim with no working latch, used on an inactive leaf or a fixed panel. So are the Emtek 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan, and 3019 Brisbane brass mortise entrance locksets. The Schlage L9056 is a working Grade 1 keyed Entrance/Office mortise lock with a latchbolt and single cylinder. If an inactive leaf needs matching trim next to an operating L9056, a dummy set is what fills that slot; it will not latch or lock.
24) I want to standardize a building on interchangeable cores - does the L9056 support that or do I need a different lock?
The Schlage L9056 supports it directly. Its cylinder options include SFIC less prep core, 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core, Schlage FSIC less core, FSIC with core in S123 keyway, and FSIC with construction core, alongside the conventional 6-pin C keyway. Among the alternatives, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option, and the BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body with public entrance function and field reversible operation. The L9056 choice comes down to whether you also want the Entrance/Office function rather than storeroom or public entrance.
25) Can I get remote release or fail safe/fail secure operation in place of the L9056?
Not from the L9056 itself, which is a mechanical lock. For electrified mortise operation, the Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in the storeroom function with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. Both need power to the opening and a transfer hinge or power transfer device; the L9056 needs neither.
26) Do I need to specify handing on an L9056, and are there mortise locks that avoid that?
Yes, the Schlage L9056 is a handed lock, so the hand of the door has to be right on the order. If handing is a problem across a mixed set of openings, the BEST 45H Series mortise lock body is field reversible in the public entrance function, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series mortise lock is supplied with no handing. Those are different functions than the L9056 Entrance/Office, so reversibility is not the only thing to weigh.
27) Can I upgrade a Schlage L9056 to a higher security cylinder later?
Yes, and it's a straightforward swap. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. If you expect to go that route, ordering the lock with the L (less conventional cylinder) option avoids paying for a standard cylinder you'll pull out anyway.
28) Is the Schlage L9056 lock body the same as other L Series functions if we need to change the function later?
The L Series uses a universal lock case that supports 10 different functions from a single lock body, and the series carries over 55 standard functions overall. For a facility standardizing on one platform, that means a change of use on a door can often be handled without replacing the whole lock case. Custom functions are available too.
29) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn an alternative to the L9056?
No, it is a component rather than a lock. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn for the 8200 Series, and the 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate for the 7800 Series. The Schlage L9056 is a complete Grade 1 keyed mortise lockset whose function already includes a thumbturn that locks and unlocks the outside lever. A separate thumbturn is what you buy to service or trim a different lock body, not to replace the L9056.
30) Is there a mortise lock that does not need batteries or wiring but still uses a keypad?
The Dormakaba PowerPlex P2066 Series mortise lock is the option in that space, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 Series is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock. The Schlage L9056 avoids the question a different way - it is a mechanical Grade 1 lock with no electronics, keyed with a single cylinder and an inside thumbturn, so there is nothing to power or recharge over its life.
