1) Will the Schlage L9080 storeroom mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep the L9080 is built for: 2-3/4 inch backset, 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, and it ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing pocket is a standard ANSI mortise prep at that backset, the case drops in. If the door is thicker or thinner than 1-3/4 inches, the standard build is not the one to order.
2) What does storeroom function mean on a mortise lock, and is it right for a supply room or mechanical room?
Storeroom keeps the outside lever permanently locked. The key retracts the latchbolt from outside, the inside lever always retracts it for free egress, and there is nothing to leave the door unlocked by accident, so a stock room, IT closet or mechanical room stays secure whether or not anyone remembers to lock up. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. There is no deadbolt on the L9080; security comes from the deadlocked latch. If you need staff to be able to leave the door in a passage state during the day, storeroom is the wrong function and an office or entrance function is what to specify.
3) Is the Schlage L9080 handed, and do I need to know the hand before I order?
Handing matters here. The L9080 is a handed lock, so you need the door hand before ordering, not after. Stand outside the door, on the side the key goes in: if the hinges are on your right and the door swings away from you it is right hand, hinges left and swinging away is left hand; a door that swings toward you at those hinge positions is right hand reverse or left hand reverse. Get that wrong and the lever ends up upside down on a keyed storeroom opening.
4) Can I get the Schlage L9080 to work on my building's existing small format interchangeable core system?
Yes, and the cylinder choice is an order option, not an accessory you buy separately. Seven cylinder prep options are offered: B for SFIC less core, H for 7-pin SFIC prep with a construction core, J for Schlage FSIC less core, R for Schlage FSIC with core in S123 keyway, T for Schlage FSIC with construction core, P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway, and L for less conventional cylinder. If you already run SFIC across the facility, order B and drop your own cores in. Standard build if you specify nothing is a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder.
5) Does using an interchangeable core in an L9080 change its ANSI security grade?
It does, and this is the detail that trips up spec writers. With a conventional cylinder the L9000 storeroom lock is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security. Fit an FSIC interchangeable core and it holds Grade 1 Operational but drops to Grade 2 Security. Fit an SFIC core and it is Grade 1 Operational, Grade 3 Security. If your spec calls for Grade 1 security outright, specify the conventional cylinder or a concealed shell cylinder, which the L9000 is certified with at A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security.
6) Can the Schlage L9080 go on a 3 hour fire rated door?
It is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions. The listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet; the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify it on the job. It also carries ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and is UL listed to that, and meets ADA requirements. For a federal job, it meets the Buy American Act.
7) I need every storeroom door in the building on one key. Can I order these keyed alike?
Keying is a required selection when you order. Keyed different is the standard, keyed alike puts multiple locks on one key for a run of storerooms, and there is a no-cylinder selection for less-cylinder builds where your locksmith supplies the cores. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where a master key system, an existing keyway, or a particular bitting goes.
8) Will the levers on the L9080 match my Von Duprin exit devices and the rest of the L Series openings?
They will. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a corridor on panic hardware and a storeroom on a mortise lock read as one hardware set. A and B are wrought roses, the small round trim around the lever. L is a cast or forged escutcheon, the full vertical plate, and it is available on 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors. N is a wrought escutcheon, available on 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
