Schlage L9458P 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the L9458 classroom security function actually work during a lockdown?
Either key throws the deadbolt, so a teacher can lock the door from inside the classroom without stepping into the corridor. Once locked, the outside lever is inoperative. The inside lever always stays free: one motion retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt and unlocks the outside lever again, so egress is never blocked. The auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, which stops the latch being carded or shimmed.
2) Is the Schlage L9458 fire rated for a classroom door?
The L Series latch is UL Listed for a 3-hour fire door, and the assembly is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you confirm the listing on the part in your hand. It is also ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and meets ADA requirements.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage L9458 handed, or is it reversible in the field?
The lock body is field reversible, so one part covers left and right hand openings. The exception is the 12 lever design, which has to be specified right hand or left hand at the time of order. If you are running any of the other lever designs (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17 or 18), handing is not an order decision.
4) What cylinders and keying do I need to specify with the L9458 mortise lock?
Because the L9458 is a double cylinder function, it takes a cylinder on each side. The standard supply is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. You can order it keyed different or keyed alike, or order it less cylinder if you are supplying your own cores to match an existing system. Choose the L cylinder option for less conventional cylinder, or P for the 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If you need a UL437 rated cylinder, the L Series accepts the Primus 20-500 Series.
5) Does the Schlage L9458 come with a strike, and will it work with my existing frame prep?
A 10-072 strike ships with the lock: 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, 1-3/16 inch lip length, with a box. That is the standard ANSI square corner strike footprint, so it lines up with a frame already prepped for an ANSI strike. If your frames are radius corner, you will need to specify a different strike or file the prep. The 1-3/16 inch lip is sized for a flush face frame; deeper reveals or stop conditions call for a longer lip.
6) Should I use a classroom security mortise lock or a plain classroom function lock?
The difference is where the teacher stands to lock the door. A standard classroom function has to be keyed from the corridor side. The L9458 is classroom security: either key throws the deadbolt, so the door can be secured from inside the room, and the inside lever still gives immediate egress in one motion. If you do not need inside locking, the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for the same thickness.
7) Does using an interchangeable core in a Schlage L9000 mortise lock change its ANSI grade?
It does, and it is the detail that trips up a spec. With the standard conventional cylinder the lock is Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security. Fit an FSIC interchangeable core and it becomes Grade 1 Operational, Grade 2 Security. Fit an SFIC core and it is Grade 1 Operational, Grade 3 Security. With a concealed shell cylinder it holds A156.13 Grade 1 for both. If your project specification calls for Grade 1 security, order the conventional or concealed shell cylinder, not an IC core.
8) Can I use the Schlage L9458 on a 1-3/8 inch door or a thicker 2 inch door?
As supplied, no. The L9458 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, the standard commercial thickness, and thickness is set by the lock case and trim, not adjustable in the field. Schlage does publish different door thickness options within the L Series options portfolio, so a non-standard thickness has to be specified as an option at order. For thicker doors from another brand, the Hager 3800 Series Grade 1 mortise locks cover 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches, though those are passage and office functions rather than classroom security.
9) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9458 classroom mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series built for a 1-3/4 inch door, the same door thickness the L9458 is built for. The Cal-Royal NM8070 is also a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, with an auxiliary deadlatch like the L9458's auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. The difference to check before you swap is the deadbolt: the L9458 is a classroom security function with a deadbolt actuated by either key, double cylinder keyed, while the ML2003 and NM8070 are catalogued as classroom function.
10) I want keypad access on the classroom door instead of keys - what replaces a keyed classroom mortise lock?
Three electronic classroom mortise locks cover that. The Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy is Grade 1 with classroom function, 300 user codes, and fits doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inches thick. The Alarm Lock DL2700CR Trilogy T2 is Grade 1 classroom function in a weatherproof design for the same 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch range. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset using RFID credentials for a 1-3/4 inch door. The Schlage L9458 is a mechanical lock keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so moving to any of these changes how the room is credentialed and rekeyed.
11) Can a mortise deadbolt be used in place of a classroom security mortise lock?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock. Both provide a bolt only, with no latchbolt and no lever. The Schlage L9458 combines the latchbolt retracted by lever from either side, a key-actuated deadbolt, and an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress - a deadbolt alone does not give the door a latching function or that single-motion egress.
12) What is the difference between a classroom security mortise lock and an intruder function mortise lock?
The BEST 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID for a 1-3/4 inch door. Intruder function locks are built to be secured from inside the room. The Schlage L9458 is a classroom security function where the deadbolt is actuated by either key, so the room is secured with a key from either side, and the inside lever retracts both bolts and unlocks the outside lever. Both are heavy duty, so the choice is about whether staff secure the door with a key or from the inside without one.
13) I need the classroom door on the access control system - what Schlage mortise lock does that job?
Within Schlage Electronics, the LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile enabled deadbolt with LED on Greenwich trim, right hand, rated for 3 hour fire doors. For a wired opening, the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. The L9458 is a mechanical lock; the L Series also carries motor-driven electrified functions with customer-selectable EL/EU and RX, DPS, latchbolt and deadbolt monitoring if you want to stay in the L9000 case.
14) Will the L9458 match the levers on the Von Duprin exit devices already in my building?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. For a school or campus standardizing across classroom doors, stairwell exit devices and electrified openings, that means one lever design and one finish carries across the whole facility. Nine lever designs are offered here, four rose and escutcheon options, and eight finishes from bright brass through satin stainless steel.
15) What is the difference between the Schlage L9458 and an electronic classroom lock like the TownSteel FME-2000?
The L9458 is entirely mechanical, no batteries, no wiring, no credential management. Access is controlled by keys and the deadbolt. If you want credentials and an audit trail instead, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors, the FME-4000 adds an intruder classroom function with RFID, and the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 classroom electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. Note that thickness range if your doors are a true 1-3/4 inches.
16) Is a Schlage L9458 secure enough for an exterior or high-risk school door?
Security is built into the bolt and the hub. The deadbolt carries an anti-saw pin to prevent cut-through, and a security blocking hub stops the lock being picked by pulling the levers off. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, rated heavy duty for commercial use, and the lock exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards. It also holds ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and UL listing, plus Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings.
17) What ANSI function code is the Schlage L9458, and how do I cross it to another manufacturer?
The L9458 is ANSI/BHMA function F34. That code is what lets you cross the function between brands: a competitor's F34 mortise lock performs the same way, latchbolt by lever from either side, deadbolt by either key, inside lever retracting both. When you are matching a hardware schedule that lists functions by ANSI code rather than by manufacturer number, F34 is the line item to look for.
18) Does the Schlage L9458 meet Buy American requirements for a government or school project?
The L Series meets the Buy American Act. For a publicly funded school, municipal or federal job where BAA compliance is a submittal requirement, that is on the record along with the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 certification and the UL fire door listing.
19) I am standardizing a building on Schlage L Series but need different functions on different doors. Can I keep one lock body?
Largely, yes. The L Series universal lock case supports 10 different functions from a single lock body, and the series carries more than 55 standard functions overall. For a facility running classroom security on teaching spaces, storeroom on mechanical rooms and office on administration, that means fewer distinct case part numbers on the shelf and one lever, rose and finish family across every opening.
20) The room does not need a deadbolt, just a lockable lever - what is a simpler mortise lock than the L9458?
For a room that only needs the outside lever locked, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. Storeroom locks work the latchbolt only. The Schlage L9458 adds a deadbolt actuated by either key and an inside lever that retracts both bolts and unlocks the outside lever, which is what makes it a classroom security function rather than a storeroom one.
21) Which mortise lock fits a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The Hager 3810E and 3810S 3800 Series Grade 1 passage mortise locks carry a door thickness range of 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches, the 3810E with an escutcheon and the 3810S with a rose, both on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Hager 3850E office function mortise lock covers the same 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch range. The Schlage L9458 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the backset prep matches these Hagers but the door thickness does not carry past 1-3/4 inches.
22) What mortise lock do I use for a behavioral health room instead of a lever classroom lock?
For ligature resistant openings the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel, passage function, for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so the room does not lock; the Schlage L9458 is a keyed classroom security lock. Schlage covers ligature resistant openings within the L Series through the Gold Standard ligature resistant trim.
23) For a dorm room rather than a classroom, is there a mortise lock with a deadbolt that suits better?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The single cylinder deadbolt means the resident throws it with a turn from inside. The Schlage L9458 is double cylinder keyed with the deadbolt actuated by either key, which suits an opening where only keyholders set the bolt. Both are heavy duty Grade 1.
24) Is an Emtek mortise entrance lockset a substitute for a Schlage L9458?
No. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - a fixed trim with no working latch or bolt, used on an inactive leaf. The Schlage L9458 is a keyed classroom security mortise lock, ANSI/BHMA F34, with a working latchbolt, deadbolt and auxiliary latch. A dummy set cannot secure or latch the opening.
25) What is a comparable Grade 1 mortise lock for an office or entrance door rather than a classroom?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for a 1-3/4 inch door, matching the L9458's 1-3/4 inch door thickness and its use of an auxiliary latch. The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, non-keyed. Office function locks are set by the occupant; the Schlage L9458 is keyed with the deadbolt actuated by either key.
26) Which mortise lock has a field reversible hand like the Schlage L9458?
The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty public entrance mortise lock body with field reversible operation, and the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty MA Series mortise passage lock, fire rated, also field reversible. The Schlage L9458 is field reversible as well, with hand specified only for the 12 lever. If your openings swing both ways and you are stocking one part number, all three avoid handed inventory - the difference is function, since the 45HCAC is public entrance and the MA101 is passage.
27) Can I use a Dormakaba E-Plex pushbutton mortise lock on a classroom door instead of a keyed lock?
The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card mortise lock in a back to back configuration, and the E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock for wide stile doors. The PowerPlex P2066 is a mortise lock in the same 2000 form. These credential the door by code or card rather than by key. The Schlage L9458 is a mechanical double cylinder keyed lock on a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so it stays inside an existing key system while the E-Plex line does not.
