Schlage LV9076P 06B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Schlage LV9076 on a fire rated door?
No. The L9000 Series is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, and the LV9076 is the Vandlgard version of that 9076 holdback function. If the opening is a labeled fire door, pick a different classroom function from the L Series instead of the holdback version.
2) What does the holdback feature on the Schlage LV9076 mortise lock actually do?
It lets you hold the latchbolt retracted so the door stays free-swinging. You turn the inside lever and rotate the key 360 degrees to set it. Normal operation is classroom: the latchbolt retracts from either lever unless the outside lever is locked by key, and when locked the key outside or the lever inside retracts it. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
3) Will the LV9076 fit my existing mortise prep and strike?
It uses the standard commercial mortise prep: 2-3/4 inch backset, 1-3/4 inch door thickness, lock case 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch and a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. The supplied strike is the 10-072, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame already has an ANSI square corner strike cutout from another L Series lock, it drops straight in.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Schlage LV9076?
The lock itself is field reversible, so in most cases you do not hand it. The one exception is the 12 lever design, which is handed and requires you to call out right hand or left hand on the order.
5) Does the LV9076 come with a cylinder, and can I use my own keyway?
You choose. The P option ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway; the L option is less conventional cylinder, which is what you order if you are supplying your own cylinder or running an interchangeable core. Keying is specified separately as keyed different or keyed alike, and you can note special keyway or keying requirements on the order.
6) If I put an interchangeable core in this Schlage mortise lock, does it still meet Grade 1?
The security grade changes. With a conventional cylinder the L9000 lock is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security. With an FSIC interchangeable core it stays Grade 1 operational but drops to Grade 2 security, and with SFIC it is Grade 1 operational, Grade 3 security. Worth knowing if your spec calls out Grade 1 security explicitly.
7) What is a mechanical Grade 1 classroom mortise lock alternative to the Schlage LV9076?
The Schlage LV9076 is a Grade 1 classroom-function mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch doors. Two mechanical Grade 1 classroom mortise alternatives are the Corbin Russwin ML2003 of the ML2000 Series, a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070, a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both cover the same door thickness, so the decision comes down to keyway and trim program rather than opening prep.
8) What should I use instead of the LV9076 if the classroom needs lockdown from inside the room?
The Schlage LV9076 locks the outside lever by key only, with the inside lever always free for egress. For an intruder-style lockdown, the BEST 45HCA heavy duty mortise lockbody is offered in an Intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) I need a mortise lock for a fire-rated classroom door. Does the LV9076 apply?
The Schlage L Series latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors except the L9076 and L9077 functions, so the holdback function is outside that listing. If the opening requires a fire-rated mortise lock, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with a fire rating and field reversible operation, and the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a 3 hour fire rating. Match the function you need to a fire-rated model before ordering.
10) What is the Vandlgard option on a Schlage L Series lock and why would I want it?
Vandlgard is Schlage's free-wheeling outside trim. When the outside lever is locked, it spins freely instead of transferring force into the lock case, so someone hanging on or kicking the lever does not break the internals. That is why the LV prefix shows up on school and other high-abuse openings. It is offered on most L Series functions, including electrified ones.
11) Which rose or escutcheon should I pick for a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
Trim choice is tied to door thickness. The L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/4 through 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 through 2-1/4 inch. The A and B wrought roses are the other two designs. Note the lock itself is listed at 1-3/4 inch door thickness, so anything thicker needs the thick-door option specified.
12) What finishes does the Schlage LV9076 come in, and will it match the rest of my building?
Eight finishes are orderable on this lock: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless steel. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the usual commercial matches. Levers also suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so you can carry one lever design across locks and exit hardware.
13) What is the ANSI function code for the LV9076, and does it have a deadbolt?
It is an F06 classroom function, latchbolt only, no deadbolt. Security comes from the auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed, so the latch cannot be carded back.
14) I want keypad or credential access on a classroom door instead of a key. What should I look at?
The LV9076 is a purely mechanical lock, no electronics. For credential-based classroom openings, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the FME-4000 adds electronic intruder classroom function. On the keypad side, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 Trilogy classroom mortise lock with 300 user codes, though it is prepped for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors rather than a flat 1-3/4.
15) Is the Schlage LV9076 mortise lock ADA compliant for a school corridor?
The L Series meets ADA requirements, and this is a lever lock rather than a knob. For California work, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. The inside lever is always free for egress, which is what a classroom corridor door needs.
16) Is the Accentra 8805FL or Cal-Royal NM8080 a substitute for the Schlage LV9076?
No. Both are storeroom-function locks: the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom mortise lockset. Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked at all times with key entry only, while the Schlage LV9076 classroom function lets the key unlock the outside lever for free operation. If teachers need to leave the door unlocked during class, storeroom will not do it.
17) Will a Baldwin 6310 mortise lock body work in the same door prep as the Schlage LV9076?
No. The Schlage LV9076 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body is a 2-1/2 inch backset unit for doors 1-3/8 inch and over, and the 6310190RRLS is the right hand reverse lever by lever version of the same 2-1/2 inch backset lock. A 2-1/2 inch backset lands the cylinder and lever at a different distance from the door edge, so the prep is not interchangeable.
18) What is a simpler mortise lock option if the classroom door does not need to be keyed?
The Schlage LV9076 is a keyed single cylinder lock supplied standard with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Where no key is needed, the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim and a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch, the 3810E is the same function with escutcheon trim, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 non-keyed office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on the same 2-3/4 inch backset. All three match the LV9076 backset.
19) Which mortise lock should I choose for a behavioral health room instead of the LV9076?
The Schlage LV9076 uses standard L Series lever trim. For ligature-resistant openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset with passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the satin stainless arch trim passage version, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so plan keying separately.
20) Does the Schlage LV9076 include a deadbolt, and what should I order if I need one?
No, the Schlage LV9076 is a non-deadbolt classroom function; the latchbolt is deadlocked by an auxiliary latch when the door closes. For a bolt, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset matching the LV9076, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors.
21) What mortise lock works with an access control system where the Schlage LV9076 would not?
The Schlage LV9076 is a mechanical key-operated lock with no electrified option. For access control, the BEST 45HW Series is a wired electromechanical heavy duty mortise lock with 12V/24V operation, and the Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in a storeroom function. Both require power transfer through the door.
22) Does the Schlage LV9076 qualify for a federally funded job under Buy American?
Yes, the L Series meets the Buy American Act. It also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which matters on Florida coastal work.
23) What is the lock case made of on the Schlage L9000 mortise lock?
Cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, which is the corrosion-resistant finish on the case itself rather than the visible trim. It is a heavy duty commercial lock, not a residential one.
