Schlage LV9082P 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage LV9082 institution function actually do when someone tries the lever?
Nothing happens. On the LV9082 the levers on both sides are always inoperative, and the latchbolt is retracted by key from either side only. Nobody passes through without a key, inside or out. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed. This is the function used on utility rooms, mechanical spaces, and secure institutional openings where free egress is not wanted. If people inside need to get out without a key, this is the wrong function.
2) Will the LV9082 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, 1-3/16 inch lip, with a box. That is the standard ANSI square-corner mortise strike footprint. If your frame is prepped square corner for an ANSI mortise strike, the included one drops in. Frames cut for a curved-lip or radius-corner strike need the frame reworked or a different strike specified.
3) What cylinders does the Schlage LV9082 take, and can I order it less cylinder for my own keying?
Both. Ordered with cylinders, it comes with conventional 6-pin cylinders in the C keyway, and since it is a double cylinder function you need one on each side. Ordered as L, less conventional cylinder, you supply your own, which is how most locksmiths handle a building already on a restricted or interchangeable-core system. Keying options at order time are keyed different or keyed alike across multiple locks, and there is a free-text field for special keying instructions.
4) Is the Schlage LV9082 fire rated and Grade 1?
Grade 1, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, both operational and security, and the ANSI function code is F30. The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with UL/cUL listing for A label single doors up to 4' x 10' and pairs to 8' x 10'; the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify it on site. Note that security grade drops if you switch to interchangeable core: Grade 2 with FSIC, Grade 3 with SFIC, while operational stays Grade 1.
5) I need a keyed mortise lock but people have to be able to get out without a key. Is the institution function right?
No. An institution function locks both sides permanently, so it does not give free egress and it should not go on an opening in a means of egress path. For a room that stays locked from outside but always opens from inside, a storeroom function is the usual call: ZenSupply carries the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise for 1-3/4 inch doors and the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise. For a classroom opening, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 classroom mortise fits 1-3/4 inch doors.
6) What is the closest Grade 1 mortise equivalent to the Schlage LV9082 from another manufacturer?
The Schlage LV9082 is a Grade 1 institution-function mortise lock: the latchbolt is retracted by key from either side and the levers on both sides are always inoperative. For a Grade 1 mortise body from a different manufacturer in a key-controlled function, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset and the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with the Arcadia lever. Storeroom keys the outside only and leaves the inside lever always free to exit; the LV9082 keys both sides and frees neither, so the two are not drop-in substitutes for one another in an opening that requires free egress by lever.
7) I need a mortise lock for a classroom door instead of an institution function - what should I order?
The LV9082 keeps the levers on both sides always inoperative with the latchbolt keyed from either side, which is not a classroom arrangement. For classroom duty, the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset in the ML2000 Series, also 1-3/4 inch door thickness. Both match the 1-3/4 inch door thickness the LV9082 is built for.
8) Is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt the same thing as the LV9082?
No. The LV9082 is a keyed double cylinder mortise lock whose function is non-deadbolt: an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, and the key retracts that latchbolt from either side. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset - a deadbolt-only case with no latchbolt and no lever trim. Both share the 2-3/4 inch backset, so they use the same door prep centerline, but the 4874 provides bolt throw only and would be paired with separate latching hardware, while the LV9082 supplies the latching itself with lever trim on both sides.
9) Which mortise lock should I use for a behavioral health room instead of the LV9082?
The LV9082 uses standard lever trim in nine lever styles across wrought rose, full face escutcheon and escutcheon designs, which is not ligature resistant trim. For behavioral health openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so they latch without locking, where the LV9082 holds both levers inoperative under key control.
10) What mortise lock gives free egress on the inside lever when the LV9082 does not?
On the LV9082 the levers on both sides are always inoperative, so exit is by key only. Where the inside must release the latch, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, and the BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation. The LV9082 is also field reversible for handing.
11) Which lock handles an intruder or lockdown function that the LV9082 does not?
The LV9082 institution function has no inside lockdown control - both levers stay inoperative and the key works from either side. For lockdown, the BEST 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. Intruder functions let the room side secure the outside lever without opening the door.
12) Does the Schlage LV9082 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. It secures with the latchbolt alone, held by an auxiliary latch that deadlocks it once the door closes, and the key retracts that latchbolt from either side. If the opening needs a true deadbolt as well, that is a different L Series function or a separate deadbolt; ZenSupply carries the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset for that job.
13) What finishes and lever designs can I get on the Schlage LV9082, and will they match my other doors?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel. Nine lever designs (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17, 18) and four rose or escutcheon choices: A and B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, and N escutcheon. The same lever, rose, and finish go on both sides with a coordinating latch and strike. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300, and LT products, so a mixed opening in one building can be matched across lock types.
14) Is the Schlage LV9082 a mechanical lock or does it need wiring?
Purely mechanical, no power and no wiring at the opening. If the application calls for electric release, access control, or credential entry instead, that is a different product entirely: ZenSupply stocks the BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V/24V, the Command Access ML190 motorized mortise with field selectable EL/EU on 24VDC, and Schlage's own ENGAGE LEMD-GRW Grade 1 wireless mortise with a 125kHz prox reader.
15) Will the Schlage LV9082 hold up in a behavioral health or high-abuse setting?
The Vandlgard free-wheeling trim handles lever abuse, and the case is heavy duty cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. What it is not is ligature resistant. For behavioral health openings that need anti-ligature trim, Schlage's Gold Standard ligature resistant trim is an L Series option, and ZenSupply also carries the TownSteel MRX-L-01 and MRX-A-01 Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature mortise locksets for 1-3/4 inch doors, plus the Marks USA 5PDN Grade 1 ligature resistant hospital push/pull paddleset.
16) Can I use the Schlage LV9082 on a federal or publicly funded project?
Yes, the L Series meets the Buy American Act, and it carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings for hurricane-zone work. Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, and the series meets ADA requirements. For a higher-security cylinder on the same lock, the UL437 listed option is the Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
17) Can I standardize a whole facility on the Schlage L Series and still get different functions on each door?
That is what the L9000 platform is built for. Over 55 standard functions share the series, and a universal lock case covers 10 of them from one body, so a maintenance shop can stock fewer cases and change function in the field. The LV9082 institution function is one line item on that schedule; the same lever, rose, and finish carry across every other function you spec, and across Von Duprin exit devices on the same building.
18) Does the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock do what the LV9082 does?
They serve different openings. The Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function with a keypad reader, Grade 1 heavy duty, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The LV9082 is Grade 1 heavy duty for the same 1-3/4 inch door thickness but is a mechanical institution function with key control from both sides and no keypad. A privacy function is locked from the occupied side; an institution function is locked to everyone without a key.
19) What is a simpler mortise lock if the opening does not need to be keyed at all?
The LV9082 is a keyed lock taking a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder on both sides. Where no key control is wanted, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock, field reversible and fire rated, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose and a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Hager 3810S shares the LV9082's 2-3/4 inch backset. Passage functions latch the door but never lock it, so they suit corridor and closet openings rather than the secured openings the LV9082 is built for.
20) Can I replace the LV9082 with an electronic mortise lock and keep credential control?
The LV9082 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, controlled entirely by the 6-pin C keyway cylinders. If the opening should be credentialed instead, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3-hour fire rating, and the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 Trilogy electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes. All are Grade 1 like the LV9082, but each requires power and a credential program the mechanical lock does not.
21) What mortise lock covers a privacy bathroom door instead of an institution lock?
An institution function like the LV9082 keys both sides and leaves neither lever operable, which is wrong for a washroom. For privacy, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Both align with the LV9082's 2-3/4 inch backset and 1-3/4 inch door prep, so the pocket work is the same class of opening.
22) Are Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the Schlage LV9082?
They are not interchangeable. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - decorative trim with no latch operation and no cylinder. The LV9082 is a keyed commercial lock with a 6-pin C keyway cylinder and an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt. A dummy set mounts on an inactive leaf; it cannot secure or latch an opening.
23) What is the difference between the LV9082 and an office or entrance mortise lockset like the Cal-Royal NM8050?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 heavy duty office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Office and entrance functions let the outside lever be left unlocked for business hours. The LV9082 is Grade 1 heavy duty on the same 1-3/4 inch door but holds both levers inoperative at all times with key-only latch retraction, so it never presents an unlocked lever.
