Schlage ND82PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND82 lock function actually do, and is it legal on an exit door?
Both levers stay fixed at all times on the ND82, and the only way through is a key from either side. That is the ANSI F87 asylum/institution/utility function, a double cylinder arrangement. Because nobody can get out without a key, it should not go on a residential door or on any door used for egress in any building; that is a life safety hazard in an emergency. Use it on utility rooms, mechanical spaces, and institutional openings where code allows key-both-sides, and confirm against your local code before you specify it.
2) Will a Schlage ND82 fit my door, and what backset and prep does it need?
The ND82 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door and uses the standard cylindrical ANSI 161 door prep, so it drops into an opening already bored for a commercial cylindrical lock. The standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate. It is non-handed, so you do not specify hand when ordering. If your existing bore is on a 2-3/8 inch backset, the standard latch will not reach the strike.
3) Will the ND82 latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
The lock ships with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip length and no box. If your frame is already cut for an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike, which is the normal commercial frame prep, the supplied strike drops straight into that cutout. Frames prepped for a small T-strike or a residential full-lip strike will need the opening enlarged. Watch the lip length too: 1-3/16 inch suits a flush frame, and a deeper reveal or applied stop wants a longer lip so the latch is not catching the edge.
4) Which cylinder option should I order on a Schlage ND82, and what if my building is on small format interchangeable core?
Four cylinder choices, and since the ND82 is keyed on both sides the choice applies to both. PD is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, supplied with two nickel silver cut keys per lock, keyed different unless you order keyed alike. BD gives you the SFIC housing less the core, so your locksmith drops in the cores your facility already runs. JD is the Schlage full size interchangeable core prep, less core. LD is less cylinder entirely, for shops that supply their own. If you are standardized on an SFIC system, order BD and pin your own cores rather than taking PD and rekeying.
5) Does the Schlage ND82 meet ADA and can it go on a fire rated door?
ADA requirements are met, and the lock complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. It is UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and for 8 ft x 8 ft pairs at 3 hours or 8 ft x 10 ft pairs at 90 minutes with the 3/4 inch latch option. It also meets the Buy American Act and federal FF-H-106C Series 161. For California fire code, the levers with a 1/2 inch or less return to door comply: Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk.
6) What is the difference between the Schlage ND82 and an ND80 storeroom lock?
The ND80 storeroom function, ANSI F86, keeps the outside lever locked and the inside lever always free to exit. The ND82 has no free side: both levers are fixed and a key is needed from either direction. Storeroom is what you want on almost any door people occupy or pass through, because egress is unimpeded. The ND82 is only for the narrow case where the room must be secured against exit as well as entry, such as a utility or institutional application, and where code permits it. Both share the same Grade 1 ND chassis and the same ANSI 161 prep, so switching between them later is a chassis swap, not a door rework.
7) What else could I buy instead of a Schlage ND82 asylum lock?

9) Can I put a Schlage ND82 in place of an existing cylindrical lock without redoing the door?
In most cases yes. Every ND Series lock, including the electronic and ligature resistant trim versions, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so they are interchangeable with each other and go into new construction or retrofit openings alike. What you need to confirm on the door in front of you is the 2-3/4 inch backset for the standard 13-247 latch, the 1-3/4 inch thickness, and that the frame is cut for the 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike.
10) The double cylinder function is not allowed on my egress door - what Grade 1 lever should I use instead?
For an egress opening, a storeroom or classroom function is the usual substitution. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is Grade 1, keyed and clutching, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter C1000 classroom security model is Grade 1 in the same thickness range. Within the Schlage ND family, the ND80 is the ANSI F86 storeroom function and the ND70 is the ANSI F84 classroom function. 11) Can I get several ND82 locks keyed alike on one key?
Keying is a required selection. Keyed different is standard, so each lock arrives on its own key with two cut keys. Choosing keyed alike puts a group of locks on one key, which is what you want when a maintenance crew carries a single key for a run of utility or mechanical rooms. 13) Which lever style and finish should I pick to match the other Schlage locks in my building?

14) Does the ND82 accept non-Schlage cylinders if my building is keyed to another manufacturer?

That is how you get an ND82 onto an existing key system from another manufacturer. Be aware of the tradeoff: the beyond Grade 1 strength figures Schlage publishes apply to locks with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC and SFIC), and with a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but the performance may be lower.
15) What is the difference between a Schlage ND82 and a Corbin Russwin CL3110?
Function, not grade. Both are Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is fire rated with a 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch door thickness range. The CL3110 is a passage/closet lock in the CL3100 Series, so it is non-keyed and the levers always retract the latch. The Schlage ND82 is keyed, with a double cylinder keyed function and both levers fixed. If a door needs to stay secured from both sides, the CL3110 does not do that job.
16) Can a Falcon K101 or T101 be used in place of a Schlage ND82?
Only where the opening does not need to lock. 20) If the opening needs electric access control instead of a mechanical double cylinder lock, what replaces a Schlage ND82?
