1) Can I install a Securitron SAM shear lock if the door and frame can't be mortised?
That is exactly what the SAM surface mount kits are for. They let the SAM magnet, the strike, or both be surface mounted when mortising is not possible, so you can put a shear lock on an opening where cutting a pocket into the frame or door is off the table (hollow metal you can't cut, an existing door you don't want to modify, or a retrofit).
2) Do the Securitron surface mount housings include the shear lock itself?
No. SMLS and SMSS are installation accessories for the SAM shear lock, not the lock. The housings give the magnet and strike a surface mounted enclosure; you still order the SAM shear lock and strike separately.
3) What material are the Securitron SAM surface mount housings made of?
Stainless steel. That matters on exposed installations, since a surface mounted housing sits out in the opening where a mortised magnet would be hidden, and it takes the wear and any cleaning chemicals directly.
4) Do I need only one SAM surface mount housing or both the lock and strike versions?
It depends on which half of the opening cannot be mortised. The SAM surface mount kit permits the magnet, the strike, or both to be surface mounted. SMLS is the surface mount housing for the lock side and SMSS is the surface mount housing for the strike side, so order one, the other, or both to match the door and frame prep you have.
5) Can an HES 1000-102 rain guard be used to surface mount a SAM shear lock?
No. The HES 1000-102 is a Grade 1 rain guard from the electric strike accessories line, made to shield an electric strike in rain or high dust areas, so it does not hold a magnet or strike body on a door face. To surface mount SAM components where mortising is not possible, the SAM surface mount kit is the correct part: SMLS is the surface mount housing for the shear lock and SMSS is the surface mount housing for the shear strike, both stainless steel.
6) Will a mortise pin transfer or a transformer replace the SAM surface mount housing?
No, those cover different parts of the job. The RCI 9500/9501 mortise pin transfer is a tamper-resistant power transfer rated 1.5A at 24VAC that carries current from frame to door, and the Adams Rite 4605 is a 115 VAC to 12/24 VAC transformer with 40 volt-amp output that powers a device. The SAM surface mount housings, SMLS for the lock and SMSS for the strike, are stainless steel mounting hardware only and carry no power or wiring function, so a wired SAM opening can use a power transfer and a power supply in addition to the housing, not instead of it.
7) Are the SAM surface mount kits suitable for commercial access control installs?
Yes, they are commercial grade hardware for electronic access control openings, sold as Magnalock accessories in Securitron's SAM Accessories line. Securitron calls them a specialty application item, meaning the standard install is mortised and these housings are the fallback for openings that cannot be cut.
8) If I want an exit release or alarm at a SAM magnetic lock opening, what parts cover that instead of the surface mount kit?
The surface mount kit only handles how the SAM magnet and strike attach to the opening.
