KE Series Edge Guards

Trimco’s KE Series Edge & Finger Guards are manufactured in the USA by master craftsmen from stainless steel, bronze or brass. Flexibility in options on the Edge Guards includes beveled or non-beveled stile, single or double acting doors, mortising, 2 or 3 edge protection and custom cutouts. Offered in standard 42″ lengths, they are also available in custom lengths. The Finger Guards protect children’s fingers from getting pinched between the door and jamb.

1) Is the Trimco KE36-1 edge guard for a beveled or a square door edge?
The KE36-1 is the 93 degree version, made for a stile beveled 1/8 inch. If your door edge is square (non-beveled), you want the KE35-1 instead, which is the 90 degree mortised 2-sided guard for a single acting door. Putting a 93 degree guard on a square edge leaves it sitting proud of the face.
2) Does the KE36-1 edge guard mortise into the door or surface mount?
It is a mortised guard, so the door edge has to be routed to receive it and the guard finishes flush with the door face. If you do not want to mortise the door, the KE32-1 is the same 93 degree, 2-sided, single acting guard in a surface applied version.
3) Will a Trimco KE36-1 work on a double acting door?
No. The KE36-1 is 2-sided and built for single acting doors only, covering the edge and one face. A double acting door needs 3-sided protection: in the mortised line that is the KE37-1 (90 degree) or KE37-2 (93 degree), and KE38-1 for a radius stile.
4) What lengths can I get the KE36-1 edge guard in for a tall door?
Three length bands are offered: up to 42 inches, 43 to 66 inches, and 67 to 96 inches. The 67 to 96 inch band covers full-height protection on 8 foot doors. Trimco also makes the KE Series in custom lengths if your opening falls outside that.
5) What finishes does the Trimco KE36-1 edge guard come in, and can I match existing brass hardware?
Four finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, and 630 satin stainless steel. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so 605 or 606 will match brass levers and push plates already carrying the same code, and 630 matches typical commercial stainless trim. All four are offered in every length band.
6) Is the Trimco KE36-1 edge guard ADA compliant for a commercial opening?
Yes, the KE36-1 is listed ADA compliant and is a commercial grade product. Because it mortises into the door edge, it adds no projection to the door face, which is what keeps it clear of ADA concerns on the push and pull side.
7) Which KE Series guard do I order for a radius door edge?
Not the KE36-1, which is cut for a 1/8 inch beveled stile. A radius stile takes the KE34-1 (surface, 3-sided, double acting) or the KE38-1 if you want it mortised. Measure the edge profile before ordering, since bevel and radius guards are not interchangeable.
8) Can I get the KE36-1 with cutouts for a lock or hinges?
Yes. The KE Series is offered with custom cutouts along with the other build options (bevel or non-bevel, single or double acting, mortising, 2 or 3 sided protection). On a mortised guard like the KE36-1 the cutouts matter, since the guard runs through the strike and hinge locations on the door edge.
9) What material is the Trimco KE36-1 edge guard made from?
Brass is the substrate on the KE36-1. The KE Series as a whole is made in the USA in stainless steel, bronze or brass, so the 630 satin stainless option gives you a stainless face if you are specifying for a kitchen, healthcare corridor or wash-down area.
10) Will an edge guard protect a door where residents are kicking or dragging carts through?
An edge guard like the KE36-1 protects the lock edge and the adjacent face strip where the door takes strike and frame damage. It does not protect the bottom of the door from cart and foot impact, so pair it with a kick plate or armor plate on high-traffic multi-family and hospitality openings.
