WAC Lighting ME-808-BK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the WAC 808 monopoint need a separate transformer or driver?
No separate transformer is required. The 808 monopoint spot light has a 120V electronic transformer built into the canopy, so it wires straight to a 120 VAC line-voltage branch circuit and drives the 12V MR16 lamp itself. It is a hardwired fixture, not plug-in, so you need a junction box at the mounting point.
2) Is a lamp included with the 808 monopoint spot light?
No lamp ships with it. The 808 monopoint takes one 12V MR16 with a GU5.3 bi-pin base, either LED or halogen, up to 50W max, and you order the lamp separately. If you want the LED MR16 supplied in the box, that is the LED version of the fixture rather than this one.
3) What dimmer works with the WAC 808 monopoint?
Use an electronic low voltage (ELV) dimmer; TRIAC dimming is also supported. On an ELV dimmer the fixture dims smooth and continuous down to 10 percent of output. A standard incandescent-only dimmer is not the right control here.
4) Can I use the 808 monopoint on a covered porch or in a bathroom?
It's UL and cUL Listed for damp locations, so a covered exterior area, a bath, or a canopy soffit is acceptable. It is not rated for wet locations, meaning anywhere exposed to direct rain or direct water contact needs a different fixture.
5) Can the 808 monopoint be mounted on a wall, or only on a ceiling?
Either. The 4.5 inch canopy mounts to walls or ceilings in any orientation, and the transformer is concealed inside the fixture so there is no remote box to hide. That makes it workable for wall-washing artwork as well as downward accenting from a ceiling.
6) How much space does the 808 monopoint take up on the ceiling and how far does it hang down?
The canopy is 4.5 inches across, and the fixture measures 4.5 x 6.25 x 6.25 inches overall with a max height of 6.25 inches. Plan that projection into display cases, soffits, and low headroom runs before you commit to a layout.
7) Will this pass California Title 24 for a retail or commercial job?
The 808 monopoint is listed as Title 24 compliant and CEC listed. It is not Energy Star rated, and it is not ADA compliant, so on protruding-object-restricted corridors or paths of travel you will need a different mounting approach.
8) Should I use a monopoint spot like this or run a track head instead?
A monopoint is the right call when you need one accent light over a single piece, a display case, or a niche, and you have a junction box at that spot: the transformer is integral and nothing else is required. Run track when you want several heads on one feed or want to reposition them later. The 808 canopy also accepts WAC low voltage track heads, so the head itself can be customized.
9) Can I change the beam spread on the 808 monopoint after installation?
Two ways. The fixture ships with a tempered clear glass lens, and spread lenses or UV lenses are available from WAC to swap in place of it, which is how you soften a hot spot or protect artwork. Beyond that, the beam comes from the lamp, so a wider MR16 changes the spread. The supplied configuration runs a 35 degree beam.
10) How do I drop the 808 spot down from a high ceiling?
WAC offers the 808 fixture with 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 48 inch extensions, so you can bring the head closer to the merchandise on a tall or vaulted ceiling instead of fighting throw distance. The extension length is specified when you order; the base configuration has no extension.
11) What finishes does the WAC 808 monopoint come in?
Two: black (ME-808-BK) and white (ME-808-WT). Both are the same die cast aluminum housing, so pick by ceiling color if you want the fixture to disappear, or black if you want it to read as deliberate gallery hardware.
12) What light output and color should I expect from the 808 monopoint accent light?
Configured with the LED MR16, it delivers 450 lumens at 3000K with 85 CRI and a rated life of 50,000 hours. That warm-white, high-CRI combination is what you want over merchandise, wood, and artwork. With a halogen MR16 instead, output and color come from whichever lamp you install, up to 50W.
