WAC Lighting HR-D411LED-WT/WT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the WAC Lighting HR-D411LED 4 inch trim need a transformer, or does it run on line voltage?
It's a low voltage trim, rated 12 VAC input, so it has to be fed from a low voltage housing with a 12 volt transformer. Wiring it to 120V line voltage will destroy the lamp. If your housing is line voltage, you need a line voltage trim instead.
2) Does the HR-D411LED come with a lamp, or do I order the MR16 separately?
The LED MR16 lamp ships with the trim, so it is a complete assembly out of the box. The housing accepts most LED MR16 lamps, so relamping later is not restricted to one specific bulb.
3) How far can this 4 inch adjustable trim aim the light off vertical?
The center lamp holder tilts the lamp up to 35 degrees from vertical. That covers wall washing, artwork, and grazing a stone or wood feature wall from a ceiling directly above. If you need a steeper aim than 35 degrees, an adjustable trim won't get you there and you should be looking at a wall wash or eyeball style trim with a greater tilt range.
4) What holds the trim into the recessed can, and will it stay tight in a ceiling that gets vibration?
Steel spring clips secure the trim to the housing. They pull the die-cast aluminum flange up flat against the ceiling and keep tension on it, which is what keeps the trim from sagging or rattling loose over time in corridors and multi-family ceilings.
5) What finish does the HR-D411LED step baffle trim come in?
One finish combination: White/White, ordered as HR-D411LED-WT/WT. That's a white baffle inside a white flange, which is the common spec when the ceiling is white and the goal is for the fixture to disappear.
6) Can I change the lens on this WAC trim to soften or diffuse the light?
Yes. It ships with a clear glass lens, and that lens can be swapped for one lens accessory, so you can go to a diffusing or color-correcting lens without changing the trim. It's one lens at a time, not stacked.
7) Why a step baffle trim instead of a plain reflector trim for a 4 inch downlight?
A baffle's stepped rings absorb stray light at the aperture and cut the glare you see when you look up into the fixture, so it is the usual pick for living spaces, bedrooms, hospitality guest rooms and anywhere people sit under the light. A specular reflector trim throws more light down but is brighter to look at. Since this one also aims, it works where you want accent light without a hot aperture.
8) Is die-cast aluminum worth it over a stamped trim for a rental or hospitality property?
Die-cast aluminum holds its shape through repeated relamping and cleaning, and the tilt mechanism on an adjustable trim gets handled far more than a fixed one, which is where thin stamped parts distort. For a portfolio where maintenance staff re-aim fixtures, the cast body is the practical difference.
