1) Can the WAC HR-801-LED low voltage remodel housing be installed in an insulated ceiling?
No. The HR-801-LED housing is not insulated ceiling rated and is not airtight, so insulation has to be kept clear of it. If the ceiling cavity is blanketed with insulation or you need an airtight assembly, choose an IC-rated airtight housing instead.
2) Will the WAC HR-801-LED work in a bathroom or covered porch ceiling?
Damp locations are fine. The HR-801-LED is UL and CUL rated for damp locations, which covers a bathroom ceiling outside the shower spray or a covered exterior soffit. It is not rated for wet locations, so a directly rain-exposed position is out.
3) Does the WAC HR-801-LED remodel housing come with a lamp, or do I order the MR16 separately?
The lamp is included. Each HR-801-LED ships with one GY5.3 base MR16 shape LED bulb rated at 50 watt equivalent, so you do not have to source a lamp to finish the install. Replacements later need to be GY5.3 bi-pin MR16 low voltage.
4) What kind of dimmer do I need for the WAC HR-801-LED low voltage recessed light?
Use an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer. On an ELV dimmer the HR-801-LED dims smoothly and continuously down to 10%. A standard incandescent/forward-phase dimmer or a TRIAC-only MLV dimmer is the wrong control here and will give you flicker or a dead bottom end, so specify ELV on the order with the fixtures.
5) Is the WAC HR-801-LED acceptable for a California job?
Yes. The HR-801-LED meets California Title 24 energy standards, which is the requirement most often flagged on residential and multi-family work in California. Pair it with the required ELV dimming control to keep the lighting control side of the code compliant too.
6) What finishes does the WAC HR-801-LED come in for matching other cans in a building?
Two finishes: black (HR-801-LED-BK) and white (HR-801-LED-WT). White is the usual choice for blending into a painted ceiling across a unit or floor; black reads darker in the aperture and is often used over retail displays or dark ceilings. Order the same suffix across the job to keep apertures consistent.
7) Is the WAC HR-801-LED a new construction housing or a remodel can?
It is a remodel housing, built to go in through a cut hole in an existing finished ceiling rather than being nailed to joists before drywall. That is what makes it the choice for a retrofit in an occupied unit, where you do not want to open the ceiling. For a new build with the framing still exposed, a new construction frame-in housing is the better fit.
8) Is the WAC HR-801-LED housing metal or plastic?
Aluminum construction. That matters for heat dissipation around the low voltage MR16 LED lamp and for durability when the clips are worked against drywall during a remodel install.
