Arrow E63 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is an Arrow E63 deadlock and why does it have no thumbturn on the inside?
The E63 is a keyed deadbolt with a cylinder on one side and a blank plate on the other. There is no thumbturn and no key on the blank side, so the bolt can only be operated from the keyed face. That is what you want on a door where you do not want anyone throwing or retracting the bolt from the inside face, such as a storefront back-of-house door, a stock room, or a gate leaf. If people need to get out through the door without a key, it is the wrong function; a cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt is what you want there.
2) Will the Arrow E63 deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes. The E63 covers 1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, which takes in both the usual 1-3/4 inch commercial leaf and older 1-3/8 inch interior doors. It ships with two 1/4 inch steel thru-bolts to pull the two-piece housing together through the door. If you are ordering the SFIC version, that unit covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch.
3) Does the Arrow E63 deadbolt work with a 2-3/8 or a 2-3/4 inch backset?
Both. The bolt is adjustable between the two standard backsets, 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch, so you set it to whatever cross-bore the door already has instead of ordering by backset. The front changes with the setting: 2-1/4 x 1 inch at 2-3/8 backset, 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inch at 2-3/4 backset. Drive-in bolts are available if the edge is not mortised for a faceplate.
4) Will the Arrow E63 bolt reach the strike on an existing deadbolt prep?
The bolt is a solid steel 1 inch throw, which is the long-throw figure a commercial deadbolt prep is cut for, so it will engage a strike set for a standard 1 inch throw bolt. It comes with the #346 wood frame strike; if you are going into a hollow metal frame, the #345 metal frame strike is the one to order instead. Take the door gap into account, since throw is measured from the face of the front.
5) Can I get the Arrow E63 deadbolt keyed to my existing Schlage keys?
There is a Schlage CS keyway version of the cylinder, ordered as the CS option, alongside the standard Arrow "A" keyway. Conventional cylinders are solid brass, drilled for 6 pins and pinned to 5, and ship with two brass keys. On the order you also pick keying: keyed different, keyed alike across multiple locks, or none if you are taking a less-cylinder version. Bring your own key code and there is a field to enter it.
6) Does the Arrow E63 take a small format interchangeable core, and does it come with one?
The IC version accepts 6 or 7 pin small format interchangeable cores and is supplied less core, so budget for cores separately. Best and Falcon type cores drop in. If your facility is already on an SFIC system, this is the version that keeps the new door on the same core program. There is also an LC (less cylinder) option if you are supplying a conventional cylinder yourself.
7) What should I use instead of the E63 if the inside of the door needs to unlock without a key?
Pick a cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt. The E63 has a blank plate inside, so there is no key-free egress. In the same Grade 2 class ZenSupply carries the Dexter DB2000 single cylinder for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Falcon D211, and the Hager 3115 with a Schlage C keyway on the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range. For Grade 1, the Accentra D111 and the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder are the equivalents.
8) What is the closest equivalent to an Arrow E63 deadlock from another brand?
The Arrow E63 is a Grade 2 deadbolt with a cylinder on one side and a blank plate on the other, so the match has to be a keyed-outside, blind-inside deadlock rather than a thumbturn deadbolt. The Corbin Russwin DL3211 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in the same cylinder x blank configuration, for doors 1-3/4 inch thick. The Corbin Russwin DL3011 is the same cylinder x blank arrangement in the DL3000 Series and covers doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The Arrow E63 carries a door thickness range of 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so on a 1-3/8 inch door the Arrow covers an opening the two Corbin Russwin deadlocks do not.
9) I need a deadbolt that can be unlocked from inside without a key - what should I order instead of the Arrow E63?
The Arrow E63 is a cylinder x blank plate deadlock, meaning the inside face is a blank plate with no turn, so it cannot be retracted from the secure side without a key. For a thumbturn inside at the same Grade 2 level, the Hager 3215 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the Dexter DB2000-SCT is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt over the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thickness range, and the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard. Egress-controlled openings are usually where the thumbturn version is required.
10) My spec calls for a Grade 1 deadlock - what steps up from the Arrow E63?
The Arrow E63 is Grade 2. For a Grade 1 deadlock keeping the same cylinder x blank plate arrangement, the Corbin Russwin DL2211 and DL3211 are Grade 1 cylindrical deadlocks in cylinder x blank, both for 1-3/4 inch doors. If the spec allows a thumbturn inside, the Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt with a 2-3/8 inch backset over 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset, and the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors.
11) Does the Arrow E63 satisfy a fire rated opening requirement?
If the submittal calls for a fire rating on the deadbolt itself, the Hager 3215 and Hager 3115 are Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts carrying a fire rating over 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a fire rating and a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, and the Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. The Arrow E63 answers a different requirement: a Grade 2 deadlock with a blank inside plate and no key or turn on the secure side.
12) I am matching an existing Schlage keyway - can I use the Arrow E63 or do I need a different brand?
The Arrow E63 is available with a CS conventional cylinder, 6 pins, Schlage CS keyway, so it can be brought onto an existing Schlage key system without changing brands. If the system is on Schlage C rather than CS, the Hager 3115 and Hager 3214 are Grade 2 deadbolts with a Schlage C keyway, the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and 6-pin cylinder, and the Dormakaba D900 small case mortise deadbolt is furnished keyed different with SC keyways.
13) Is the Arrow E63 handed, or do I need to specify left or right?
No handing to specify. Every function in the E Series is reversible in the field, so one part covers both swings. For a property manager buying a batch across mixed openings, that means a single line item rather than splitting the order by hand.
14) Is the Arrow E63 deadbolt strong enough for a commercial entrance?
It is a Grade 2 commercial deadlock. The bolt is solid steel with a hardened free-spinning steel pin insert, so a saw blade skates on the pin instead of cutting through, and the outer ring on the two-piece housing spins free to defeat a pipe wrench attack. Mounting screws are concealed. For a heavier spec, ZenSupply carries Grade 1 cylindrical deadlocks in the same cylinder x blank function, such as the Corbin Russwin DL3011 for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
15) Can I order a run of Arrow E63 deadbolts all on one key?
Yes. Keying is a required choice on the order: keyed different is the default, keyed alike puts a whole run on one key, and there is a key code field if the property is already on an established code. Add the black suede powder coat option (BSP) if you need something other than a plated finish across the run.
16) Is a double cylinder deadbolt the same thing as the Arrow E63?
No. The Arrow E63 is keyed on one side with a blank plate on the other, so there is no key access from the inside at all. A double cylinder deadbolt takes a key on both faces. If the opening needs key control from both sides, the Delaney LU Series 320601 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt, and the Dexter DB2000-DCT is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the same thickness range the E63 covers. The E63 is the choice when the inside face should present nothing at all.
17) The Arrow E63 is more lock than I need for an interior door - is there a lighter option?
The Arrow E63 is a Grade 2 commercial deadbolt. For lower-traffic interior openings, the Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with adjustable backset covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same thickness range as the E63, and the Cal-Royal LSD is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn across that same range. The Callan Model 200S is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with square trim. All three place a thumbturn on the inside rather than the E63 blank plate.
18) I am keying an Arrow E63 into a small format interchangeable core system - what else takes SFIC?
The Arrow E63 comes in an IC - SFIC Less Core version, supplied less core, and will accept Best or Falcon type cores. Among other brands, the Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single cylinder interchangeable core deadbolt supplied non-cylinder, and the Delaney LM Series 301702 is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D. Both of those put a thumbturn on the inside, where the E63 presents a blank plate.
19) What looks like an Arrow E63 substitute but will not work in the same prep?
Several deadbolts sit in the same product family without dropping into a standard bored deadbolt prep. The Codelocks CL200 is a surface deadbolt with key override and the Codelocks CL2200 is an electronic surface deadbolt, both mounted on the face of the door rather than through a bore. The Emtek 2050 and 2051 are European mortise deadbolts with an integrated roller latch, which need a mortise pocket. The BEST 8T is a tubular deadbolt tube component, not a complete lock. The Arrow E63 is a bored deadlock with an adjustable 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
20) Is there a one-sided deadbolt alternative to the Arrow E63 for a door with no inside prep?
The Arrow E63 keys from the outside and shows a blank plate inside, but it is still a full bored deadlock and needs a through-bore. The Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, which only preps one face of the door. Where the door can take a full bore and the requirement is Grade 2 with nothing operable inside, the Arrow E63 is the heavier of the two.
21) Can I use the Arrow E63 where an access control or keypad deadbolt is wanted?
The Arrow E63 is a mechanical keyed deadlock. Where the opening calls for credentials or code entry instead, the Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote, the Codelocks CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt, the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override, and the DynaLock 1300 Series is a heavy duty mortise electric deadbolt. The Delaney KP400 is the one that stays at the same Grade 2 level as the E63.
22) What finishes does the Arrow E63 deadbolt come in, and will it match the other hardware in my building?
Nine finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze equivalent, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. That covers the two finishes most commercial openings are standardized on, 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze, and every finish is offered with any of the four cylinder options.
