1) Will the Schlage L9453 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes, 1-3/4 inches is exactly what the L9453 is built for, and it's the only thickness in the standard build. Backset is 2-3/4 inches and the lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a standard ANSI mortise pocket cut for that case. If your openings are thicker than 1-3/4, that's an option you have to specify separately rather than something the standard lock covers.
2) What does the L9453 entrance function actually do at the door?
The L9453 is an entrance/office lock with a deadbolt. Either lever retracts the latchbolt unless the outside is locked by rotating the inside thumbturn 20 degrees. The same thumbturn throws or retracts the deadbolt at 90 degrees. 3) Is the L9453 handed, and do I need to specify hand when I order?

    2 out of the 7 ordered are faulty. one had to be taken apart and move a lever to get it to function. the other is not threaded on one side for the key cylinder to thread into.
