Schlage L9453P 17A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the L9453 entrance function actually do when someone turns the thumbturn?
Two separate moves off one thumbturn. Rotate it 20 degrees and the outside lever locks, so the latchbolt is only retracted from the inside; the outside lever stays locked until the thumbturn goes back to vertical. Rotate it 90 degrees and you throw or retract the deadbolt, and throwing the deadbolt also locks the outside lever. From outside, the key retracts both bolts at once. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is shut. That is the F20 entrance/office arrangement.
2) What are the options I have to specify when ordering a Schlage L9453?
Four decisions. Cylinder: conventional 6-pin C keyway, Schlage FSIC less core, SFIC less prep core, or less conventional cylinder. Rose or escutcheon: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, or N escutcheon. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, or 643E aged bronze. Keying: keyed different, keyed alike across a group of locks, or none if you are going less cylinder. Hand comes on top of all of that. The 17 lever design is fixed on this configuration.
3) Can I get the L9453 to work with my building's existing interchangeable core system?
Yes, the cylinder is an ordering choice. Four options: P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, J for Schlage FSIC less core, B for SFIC less prep core, and L for less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. Note the grade consequence Schlage states: with FSIC cores the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. Full Grade 1 security comes with the conventional cylinder. If your keyway is anything other than C, that goes in the special keying note when you order.
4) Will the L9453 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The L9453 ships with the Schlage 10-072 strike: 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, 1-3/16 inch lip, with a box. That is the standard ANSI square-corner strike footprint, so it drops into a frame already prepped for one. A curved-lip or radius-corner frame prep will not take it without work, and the lip length has to suit how far the frame face sits from the door stop. The lock also needs an armor front pocket of 1-1/4 x 8 inches in the door edge.
5) Can I use the Schlage L9453 on a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 Series latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and Schlage lists UL/cUL for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol on the latch front are how you verify it on the part itself. Deadbolt functions like the L9453 are still fine on a fire door here because the inside lever retracts both bolts in one motion for egress.
6) Should I use an entrance/office mortise lock or a classroom or storeroom function on this door?
Pick by who controls the lock and from which side. Entrance/office, which is what the L9453 is, lets someone inside the room lock the outside lever with a thumbturn and add a deadbolt, so it suits offices, suites and apartment doors where the occupant decides. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times and only a key gets you in, which is what you want on a supply or mechanical room; the Accentra 8805FL and the Cal-Royal NM8080 are storeroom mortise locks. Classroom function locks the outside lever with a key from the corridor rather than a thumbturn, as on the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or the Cal-Royal NM8070.
7) Can I key several L9453 locks alike so one key runs the whole suite?
Yes. Keyed alike is an ordering option for a group of locks, keyed different is the standard, and less cylinder is there if your locksmith is keying into an existing system. The stock cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway. Anything beyond that, a master key system, a restricted keyway, existing key bitting, goes into the special cylinder and keying note on the order.
8) What is a comparable entrance/office mortise lockset to the Schlage L9453 from another brand?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the closest straight equivalent we hold: a heavy duty Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, built for 1-3/4 inch doors, same as the L9453. 12) Can a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt replace a Schlage L9453?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series - it is bolt only, with no latchbolt and no lever trim. The L9453 combines a lever-retracted latchbolt with a deadbolt in one 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch mortise case. The 4874 shares the L9453's 2-3/4 inch backset, but it would need a separate latching device to make the door operate, so it is a companion deadbolt rather than a substitute lockset.
13) Is a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body a drop-in for a Schlage L9453?
No, the door prep is different. The Baldwin 6301 is an entry/apartment mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inch and over, offered knob by knob or, as the 6301LS, lever by lever. Not quite. The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, and it is non-keyed. The L9453 is keyed with a single cylinder and a conventional 6-pin C keyway, so it takes a key from the outside. 17) Do I need a separate deadbolt if I install an L9453 entrance lock?

19) Is the Schlage L9453 ADA compliant and does it meet Buy American requirements?

For an unlocked opening, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock in the MA Series with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. 25) Are the Emtek 3102 and similar mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the L9453?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - trim only, with no operating latch or bolt. The L9453 is a Grade 1 keyed lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever and whose deadbolt throws through a 90 degree thumbturn. Use the Emtek dummy sets on the inactive leaf of a pair, and the L9453 on the leaf that has to latch and lock.
26) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a replacement part for the L9453 thumbturn?
It is a different manufacturer's part. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn from the 8200 Series and the 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate from the 7800 Series. The L9453 is a heavy duty Schlage L Series lock whose thumbturn drives the deadbolt through 90 degrees and locks the outside lever at 20 degrees, so the thumbturn has to be the one matched to that lock case rather than a Sargent 8200 or 7800 Series part.
