1) Will the Schlage L9453 mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The L9453 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only. That is the standard commercial door thickness, so it suits most hollow metal and solid core commercial openings, but on an older 1-3/8 inch interior door it is the wrong lock. The mortise pocket also has to accept a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, with a 2-3/4 inch backset from the door edge to the spindle centerline.
2) What does the L9453 entrance function actually do when someone locks it?
Two bolts, one thumbturn. Rotating the inside thumbturn 20 degrees locks the outside lever, so the latchbolt no longer retracts from outside; rotating it 90 degrees throws the deadbolt, and throwing the deadbolt also locks the outside lever. From outside, the key retracts both deadbolt and latchbolt together. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and it retracts both bolts at once, so nobody is trapped behind a thrown deadbolt. The outside lever stays locked until the thumbturn is returned to vertical. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes.
3) Is the Schlage L9453 handed, and do I have to specify hand when I order?
Yes, the L9453 is a handed lock, so you need to know the swing of the opening before you order. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on and which way the door swings determines the hand. Getting it wrong on a mortise lock of this type means the lever and thumbturn end up on the wrong faces.
4) Does the Schlage L9453 come with a cylinder, or do I order that separately?
