1) Will the Schlage L9453 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That is the exact door thickness the L9453 is built for. It's a 1-3/4 inch commercial door lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard mortise backset on commercial openings. If your doors are thicker (custom slabs, or the 2 inch plus range you see on some entries), the L Series does offer different door thickness options, but the standard L9453 as built is a 1-3/4 inch device. Mortise the door 2-3/4 inches from the door edge to the case centerline and the case drops in.
2) How does the L9453 entrance function actually work day to day?
Two independent bolts. The latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside is locked, which happens with a 20 degree turn of the inside thumbturn. The deadbolt is thrown or pulled back separately with a 90 degree turn of the same thumbturn, and throwing the deadbolt also locks the outside lever. Once locked, an outside key or the inside lever pulls both bolts at once. The outside lever stays locked until the thumbturn goes back to vertical. Inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes.
3) Does the L9453 need to be ordered handed?
Handing matters here. The L9453 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left hand, right hand, left hand reverse or right hand reverse before you order. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on gives you the hand, and whether the door swings in or out gives you the reverse. Get it wrong on a mortise lock and the lever and the bolt orientation are wrong for the opening.
4) Can I put the Schlage L9453 on a 3 hour fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3 hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms the listing on the installed door. The lock is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and meets ADA requirements.
5) What cylinder do I have to specify with the L9453, and can I use it with my existing interchangeable core system?
Four cylinder choices on the L9453. P is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is what ships as standard. J is prepped for Schlage full size interchangeable core, less core, so you drop in your own FSIC. B is prepped for small format interchangeable core, less core, for an SFIC system. L is less conventional cylinder, for anyone supplying their own. One thing to know before you spec a core: with FSIC cores the lock rates Grade 1 Operational, Grade 2 Security, and with SFIC cores it rates Grade 1 Operational, Grade 3 Security. Full Grade 1 security comes with the conventional or concealed shell cylinder.
6) Can I get a set of Schlage L9453 locks keyed alike for one building?
Keyed alike is an ordering option on the L9453, alongside keyed different, which is the standard. Order KA when you want one key to open a run of doors, common on a tenant suite or a floor of offices. Order KD when each door needs its own key. There is also a less cylinder route, where you order the lock with no cylinder and supply your own from your existing system, which is what you want if your building is already on an FSIC or SFIC keyway. Standard cylinder when you do take one is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway.
7) Is one lock enough, or do I need a separate deadbolt above the Schlage L9453?
One lock. The L9453 is a single cylinder keyed mortise lock with the deadbolt built into the same case, thrown by a 90 degree turn of the inside thumbturn, so you do not mortise a second pocket for a standalone deadbolt. That also keeps you code compliant on an egress door, because the inside lever retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt in one motion. A separate rim or mortise deadbolt above the lock means two actions to get out. 8) Will a Schlage L9453 fit an aluminum storefront or narrow stile glass door?

The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment and 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock bodies use a 2-1/2 inch backset, offered knob by knob or lever by lever; the 6301 is listed for 1-3/4 inch and over and the 6310 for 1-3/8 inch and over. The L9453 is a 2-3/4 inch backset lock with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case, so the mortise pocket and cylinder centerline are not the same. Ligature resistant trim is the requirement there. Four trim choices, and the decision is mostly about what the door face looks like now. A and B are wrought rose, a small round plate behind the lever. L is a full face escutcheon and N is an escutcheon, both larger plates that run vertically on the door. 29) Is a BEST 45H mortise lock body a drop-in for an L9453?
They are different functions. The BEST 45H is a heavy duty mortise lock body with a public entrance function and field reversible operation, and the 45HCA carries an intruder function.
