1) Will the Schlage L9453 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly what the L9453 is built for. It's a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors, with a lock case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches and a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. 1-3/4 inches is the standard commercial door thickness, so a standard ANSI mortise pocket takes it. Thicker doors need a different door-thickness option specified rather than this standard build.
2) How does the L9453 entrance function actually work day to day?
Two independent bolts. The latchbolt retracts with the lever from either side unless the inside thumbturn is rotated 20 degrees, which locks the outside lever. The deadbolt throws or retracts on a 90 degrees turn of the thumbturn, and throwing the deadbolt also locks the outside lever. Once locked, the outside key or the inside lever pulls both bolts back at once. The outside lever stays locked until the thumbturn is returned to vertical. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, and the inside lever is always free for egress.
3) Do I need to specify a hand when ordering a Schlage L9453?
Yes, the L9453 is a handed lock, so the hand of the opening has to go on the order. Determine it from the outside of the door: the side the hinges are on and the way the door swings gives you left hand, right hand, left hand reverse or right hand reverse. 5) Does the interchangeable core option change the security grade of the L9453?
It does, and it matters if you are writing a Grade 1 spec. With the standard latch the L9000 is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and it's UL listed for 3-hour fire doors. Put an FSIC interchangeable core in and it stays Grade 1 Operational but drops to Grade 2 Security; with an SFIC core it's Grade 1 Operational, Grade 3 Security. Specify the conventional or concealed shell cylinder to hold Grade 1 security.
6) Can the Schlage L9453 go on a labeled fire door?
Yes. The L Series latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. Look for the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front to confirm the listing on the part in your hand.
