Schlage L9453P 12A 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9453 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That is exactly what the L9453 is built for. The standard build is a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door has to be prepped for a full ANSI mortise pocket, not a cylindrical bore. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the L Series carries door thickness options that have to be specified when the lock is built.
2) What does the L9453 entrance function actually do at the door?
Two bolts, worked separately. The latchbolt retracts by lever from either side unless the outside is locked by rotating the inside thumbturn 20 degrees. The deadbolt throws or retracts on a 90 degree rotation of that same thumbturn. Throwing the deadbolt also locks the outside lever, and it stays locked until the thumbturn is returned to vertical. Once locked, the outside key or the inside lever pulls both bolts back at once, and the inside lever is always free for immediate egress. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. This is the office/entrance pattern: staff secure the door from inside without a key, and keyholders still get in.
3) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Schlage L9453?
Yes, the L9453 is a handed lock and you order it left hand or right hand. Stand outside the door, on the side the key goes in: if the hinges are on your left it is left hand, hinges on your right is right hand. Get this wrong on a mortise lock and the lever and the latch bevel come out backwards for the opening.
4) Will the L9453 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The L9453 ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, 1-3/16 inch lip, with a box behind it. The armor front on the lock is 1-1/4 by 8 inches. If your frame carries an existing ANSI mortise strike of that same square-corner size, the new lock drops into the same cutout. Frames prepped with a radius-corner strike, or a different lip length for the jamb depth, need the matching strike ordered instead of reusing the standard one.
5) Which cylinder option should I pick on a Schlage L9453 keyed mortise lock?
Four ways to buy it. P is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is the standard build and what most jobs take. L gives you the lock less the conventional cylinder, for when your locksmith is supplying and keying it. J is prepped for a Schlage full size interchangeable core and ships less core. B is prepped for a small format interchangeable core, less core. The grade moves with the choice: the conventional build is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, FSIC cores drop the security rating to Grade 2, and SFIC cores to Grade 3. If you are running an existing FSIC or SFIC master key system, order J or B and drop your own cores in.
6) Is the Schlage L9453 approved for a fire rated door?
UL listed for 3 hour fire doors, and the L9000 line is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms it in the field. It is also tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational, carries the F20 function designation, and meets ADA requirements. For a federally funded job, it meets the Buy American Act.
7) Which mortise lock should be used instead of the L9453 on a classroom door?
The L9453 is an entrance/office function - the outside lever is locked by a thumbturn on the inside face, which is not how a classroom opening is meant to be secured. For classroom function in a Grade 1 mortise, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset, also 1-3/4 inch. Both cover the same door thickness as the L9453.
8) What mortise lock works on a door thinner than 1-3/4 inch where the L9453 will not fit?
The L9453 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner stock, the Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with round knob for 1 inch doors. Note that both are double cylinder, keyed on both faces, where the L9453 is single cylinder with an inside thumbturn. For thicker doors, the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body covers 1-3/8 inch and over.
9) What should be used instead of the L9453 where the lock has to be released by an access control system?
The Command Access ML190 Series ML19092-M is a motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, heavy-duty, storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW Series is a wired electromechanical heavy duty mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. Both take a signal from an access control panel. The L9453 is a mechanical lock with no electronic operation, released by key or by the inside thumbturn only.
10) Can the L9453 go on an aluminum storefront or glass door?
It is not the right family for one. The L9453 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 4-7/16 inch by 6-1/16 inch by 1 inch mortise case and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is stile-and-rail or hollow metal door prep. For narrow stile aluminum, the Alarm Lock DL1300NW Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock is made for Adams Rite deadlatches, and for all-glass openings the Kaba Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock.
11) Can I get several L9453 locks keyed alike for one building?
Keyed alike is an order option on the L9453, so a set of doors can run on one key, and keyed different is the standard if each opening needs its own. There is also a no-cylinder route if the locks are going into a system your locksmith keys on site. Special keyway or master key requirements are entered as a note on the order rather than picked from a list.
12) What is the difference between the L9453 and a classroom or storeroom mortise lock?
It comes down to who can lock the door and whether there is a deadbolt. The L9453 is the entrance/office pattern with a thumbturn inside: the occupant locks the outside lever and throws a separate deadbolt without a key. A storeroom lock keeps the outside lever locked at all times and opens by key only, with no thumbturn and no deadbolt, like the Cal-Royal NM8080 or the Accentra 8805FL. A classroom lock is keyed from outside to lock and unlock the outside lever, like the Cal-Royal NM8070 or the Corbin Russwin ML2003. Pick the L9453 for an office, suite entrance or tenant space where the person inside decides when it is secure.
13) What is the closest alternative to a Schlage L9453 entrance mortise lock from another brand?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match on function: Grade 1 heavy duty office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, prepped for a 1-3/4 inch door like the L9453. Also on the entrance side, the Baldwin 6301LS is an entry/apartment mortise lock body, lever by lever, on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inches and over, so it is a different backset and a different prep, not a drop-in for a Schlage pocket. If the requirement is specifically the separate thumbturn-thrown deadbolt, stay with the L9453 or check the Sargent 7925, a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt.
14) Will the Schlage L9453 match the finish on the exit devices and other doors in my building?
Twelve finishes are offered, from 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze and 613 oil rubbed bronze through 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two you will find on most existing commercial openings. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a building running Von Duprin on the exits can carry the same lever look onto the office doors.
15) Do I have to choose a rose or escutcheon with the L9453, and does it change the door prep?
Four trim choices: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, and N escutcheon. Roses are the compact round trim; the escutcheons are the long plates that cover more of the door face and hide older prep or scarring from a lock that has already been changed out once. If you are replacing a lock that left visible marks on the stile, an escutcheon option is the one that covers it. Trim style has to be picked at order time along with the 12 lever design and the finish.
16) Can the Schlage L9453 be electrified or tied into an access control system?
No. The L9453 is a mechanical lock with a thumbturn, with no electronics in it. The L Series does carry electrified functions separately, which auto detect 12V or 24V DC, are field selectable EL or EU, and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor. If the opening needs to release from an access control panel, order one of those instead of the L9453. For a standalone credential lock rather than a wired one, the Schlage LEMD ENGAGE wireless mortise lock is a Grade 1 mortise with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating.
17) Is a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt a substitute for a Schlage L9453?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset - a deadbolt alone, with no latchbolt and no lever trim. The L9453 is a single cylinder keyed lever lock that combines a latchbolt with a deadbolt in one 4-7/16 inch x 6-1/16 inch x 1 inch case, also on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The 4874 matches the backset but would leave the opening with no latching function and no operating trim. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is likewise a deadbolt function only.
18) What is a simpler mortise lock for an office door that does not need a key?
The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch door thickness range. It matches the L9453's 2-3/4 inch backset but drops the cylinder entirely. The L9453 is keyed, single cylinder, and standard with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Use the 3850E where the office door only needs to be secured from inside and no key control is required.
19) Which mortise lock replaces the L9453 on a restroom or bedroom door?
A privacy function, not an entrance function. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Both cover the same 1-3/4 inch door as the L9453, and the 3840S shares its 2-3/4 inch backset. The L9453 is keyed from outside, which a privacy opening does not call for.
20) What mortise lock offers the same entrance function with electronic access instead of a key?
The Schlage LE Series LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock covering privacy, office and apartment functions on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 3 hour fire rating, at Grade 2. The Schlage ENGAGE LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile enabled deadbolt with LED, also 3 hour fire rated. The L9453 is Grade 1 and mechanical, with no electronic operation, so credentials are keys cut to its cylinder rather than cards or phones.
21) What is the difference between the Schlage L9453 and the Sargent 7925 dormitory mortise lock?
Both are Grade 1 heavy duty mortise locks with a single cylinder deadbolt. The Sargent 7925 is a dormitory exit function from the 7900 Series with rose trim, meaning the outside lever unlocks by key and stays unlocked until relocked. The L9453 is an entrance function where throwing the deadbolt by 90 degree thumbturn rotation locks the outside lever, and restoring the thumbturn to vertical releases it. The L9453 also offers wrought rose, full face escutcheon and escutcheon trim options.
22) Which mortise lock suits a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening rather than the L9453?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel with a passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so they do not lock; the L9453 is a keyed entrance lock with a deadbolt and a projecting 12 lever.
23) Is the Falcon MA101 an alternative to the Schlage L9453?
Only where the door does not need to lock. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock from the MA Series with field reversible operation and a fire rating. Passage means the lever always retracts the latch from both sides. The L9453 is keyed with a single cylinder and a thumbturn-thrown deadbolt, and it is a handed lock ordered left hand or right hand rather than field reversed. On a corridor or closet door with no security requirement the MA101 covers it; on a secured office it does not.
24) Does the L9453 accept interchangeable cores, and what peer offers the same?
Yes. The L9453 is ordered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, less conventional cylinder, Schlage FSIC less core, or SFIC less prep core. Among peers, the Cal-Royal NM8080 storeroom mortise lockset is offered with an interchangeable core option, and the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. Where a facility already keys to an SFIC system, the L9453 can be ordered less core to drop into it.
25) Is a Sargent 130KB mortise thumbturn a replacement part for the L9453 thumbturn?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn belonging to the 8200 Series, and the 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate from the 7800 Series. Those are Sargent trim pieces made for Sargent lock bodies. The L9453 thumbturn is part of the L Series lock, where a 20 degree rotation locks the outside lever and a 90 degree rotation throws the deadbolt; that geometry belongs to the L Series hub, not to a Sargent 8200 or 7800 thumbturn.
26) What is the difference between the L9453 and the BEST 45H public entrance mortise lock body?
The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body with a public entrance function and field reversible operation. Public entrance keeps the latch retracted by lever from both sides with key control over locking the outside. The L9453 is heavy duty as well, with an entrance/office function in which a 20 degree thumbturn rotation locks the outside lever and a 90 degree rotation throws the deadbolt. The 45HCAC is field reversible; the L9453 is handed and ordered left hand or right hand.
27) What mortise lock fits a door in the 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thickness range?
The Alarm Lock Trilogy locks cover that band: the DL2700CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with classroom function and weatherproof design, the DL3500CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes and classroom function, and the DL4500DB is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad. All three list a 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch door thickness range. The L9453 is specified at 1-3/4 inch, which sits inside that band but is a single thickness rather than a range.
28) Which credentialed mortise lock keeps the Grade 1 rating on a 1-3/4 inch door?
The TownSteel FME-2000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock with keypad reader is Grade 1 heavy duty on a 1-3/4 inch door in privacy function. The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I-M002 is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access at BHMA Grade 2. The L9453 holds Grade 1 heavy duty on the same 1-3/4 inch door with mechanical key operation.
29) If the building already runs Baldwin 6310 storeroom mortise bodies, can the L9453 be added to the same doors?
Check the backset before ordering. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body and the 6310190RRLS right hand reverse lever version are 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch and over. The L9453 is 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door. Adding an L9453 to a door prepped for a 6310 means re-prepping the edge and face; the two are not interchangeable in an existing pocket.
30) Is the Schlage L9453 heavy duty enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
It is a commercial heavy duty mortise lock, Grade 1 on both security and operational testing under A156.13, with a case body of cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. The deadbolt carries an anti-saw pin to stop cut-through, and a security blocking hub keeps the lock from being picked by pulling the levers off. That is the specification for tenant suite doors, main office entrances and multi-family common areas, not a light commercial or residential opening.
31) Can I standardize a whole facility on the Schlage L9000 Series and still get every function I need?
That is the case for the L Series. It runs over 55 standard functions with custom functions on top, and a universal lock case supports 10 different functions from one body, so a maintenance shop can stock fewer lock cases and change what a door does. Trim carries across as well, with 33 lever designs, two knobs, five roses and three escutcheons, and the levers suite across tubular locks, exit devices and multipoint locks. Options include a 180 degree visibility indicator, Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim on most functions, tactile warning, anti-microbial coatings, and ligature resistant trim for behavioral health. The L9453 is the entrance/office member of that family.
32) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an option in place of the L9453?
They serve a different purpose. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - fixed trim with no working latch or bolt, used on an inactive leaf or a false door. The L9453 is a working keyed entrance lock with a latchbolt, a deadbolt, and an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. Pair a dummy set with a live lock on the active leaf rather than substituting one for the other.
33) Which keyless mortise lock covers an entrance opening without running a key system?
The Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 Series is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock for wide stile applications, and the PowerPlex P2066 Series is a mortise lock from the PowerPlex 2000 Series. The E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 back to back entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card mortise lock. The L9453 is mechanical, single cylinder keyed, and ships standard with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so every user carries a cut key rather than a code.
34) What is the difference between the L9453 and the Hager 3810 passage mortise locks?
The Hager 3810E and 3810S are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors, the 3810E with escutcheon and the 3810S with rose. They match the L9453's 2-3/4 inch backset and offer the same rose-or-escutcheon choice the L9453 makes through its wrought rose, full face escutcheon and escutcheon options. The difference is function: passage never locks, while the L9453 is keyed with a thumbturn-controlled deadbolt.
35) Which mortise lock is right for a medium duty interior door where the L9453 is more lock than the opening needs?
The Codelocks CL2255 is an electronic tubular mortise latch in a brushed steel finish from the CL2000 Series, rated medium duty. The L9453 is heavy duty Grade 1 with a CRS body carrying zinc dichromate plating and a 10-072 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. On a light-traffic interior door the CL2255 covers the function; on an exterior or high-traffic commercial opening the heavy duty build is what carries the cycle count.
