Schlage L9465P 03A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9465 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly its prep. The L9465 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the L Series has separate door thickness options that have to be specified instead of the standard build.
2) How does the L9465 closet/storeroom function actually work day to day?
Two separate bolts. The latchbolt retracts with the lever from either side at all times, so nobody gets shut in, and the deadbolt is thrown and retracted only by key from the outside cylinder. Inside is lever only, no thumbturn. That is what makes it a closet or storeroom lock: free passage until someone keys the deadbolt to secure the room.
3) Can I use the Schlage L9465 on a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 latch is UL Listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and UL symbol stamped on the latch front is how an inspector confirms it in the field.
4) What cylinder do I get with the L9465, and can I order it less cylinder for my own keyway?
Standard build is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. Four cylinder options are offered: P for the conventional 6-pin C keyway, L for less conventional cylinder, J for Schlage FSIC prepped less core, and B for SFIC less prep core. Locksmiths keying to an existing system normally take L, J or B and supply their own cylinder or core.
5) Does the security grade change if I put an interchangeable core in the L9465?
It does, and this trips people up on spec jobs. With the standard conventional cylinder the lock is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security. With Schlage FSIC interchangeable cores it stays Grade 1 operational but drops to Grade 2 security. With SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. If your spec calls for Grade 1 security, order the conventional or concealed shell cylinder.
6) Will the L9465 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The standard strike shipped with it is the 10-072, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame has an existing square corner ANSI mortise strike of that size, the new lock drops in. Frames prepped for a curved lip or a different lip length need the strike changed to suit the frame reveal.
7) I need keyed alike storeroom locks across several doors. How do I order that?
Keying is a required selection on the L9465. Keyed different is the standard, keyed alike is there for running a group of doors on one key, and there is a None option when you are taking a less cylinder or less core build and keying it yourself. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where a master key system or a non-C keyway gets noted.
8) Is the L9465 a mortise lock or will it fit a standard 2-1/8 inch bored door?
Mortise only. The L9465 needs a mortise pocket in the door edge sized for a 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch case, plus the trim and cylinder holes from the L Series template. A cylindrical door bored 2-1/8 inch cannot take it without re-prepping the door, so on a bored opening you want a tubular or cylindrical storeroom lock instead.
9) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9465 storeroom mortise lock?
The Schlage L9465 is a Grade 1 storeroom-function mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a single-cylinder keyed deadbolt. The closest cross-brand matches on grade and function are the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with Arcadia lever and the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset, which is rated for 1-3/4 inch doors and offered with an interchangeable core option. All three serve the same storeroom application - key outside, free egress inside.
10) The opening is a classroom, not a storeroom - what mortise lock should I order instead?
The L9465 is a closet/storeroom function and keys the deadbolt from outside only, which is not a classroom arrangement. For classroom openings, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. Marks USA LA318GJ adds a classroom security indicator with an ANSI strike on 1-3/4 inch doors.
11) Do I need to order the levers and roses separately, or does the L9465 come complete?
It comes as a complete lockset: same lever design, rose and finish on both sides of the door, with the matching latch and strike. What you choose on the order is the trim style. This one is the 03 lever, and the rose or escutcheon options are A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, and N escutcheon.
12) What finishes can I get so the storeroom doors match the rest of my building's hardware?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. For a mixed opening, note that all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a corridor exit door and a storeroom door can be made to look alike.
13) Is the L9465 deadbolt secure enough for a stockroom or tool crib?
Deadbolt functions in the L9000 line carry an anti-saw pin inside the bolt to stop cut-through, and a security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by pulling the levers off. The lock also holds an ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 UL listing. Case material is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, and the lock is rated heavy duty commercial.
14) Does the L9465 meet ADA and federal purchasing requirements for a school or government job?
It meets ADA requirements and complies with the Buy American Act. On the California Referenced Standards Code, all L Series levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply. Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings are also held. For a higher security cylinder on the same lock, the UL437 listed Primus 20-500 Series cylinder can be specified.
15) What are my alternatives to the Schlage L9465 for a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock?
Two straightforward mechanical alternatives: the Accentra 8805FL, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock from the 8800 Series with the Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080, a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. Neither one carries the L9465's separate key-operated deadbolt, so if the deadbolt is the reason you are buying, stay with the L9465.
16) I want a keypad or credential reader on my storeroom door instead of a key. What replaces the L9465?
The L9465 is purely mechanical, no electronics. For access control on the same mortise prep, look at the BEST 45HZ EZ Series keypad mortise lock with key override, the Alarm Lock Trilogy DL3500 Grade 1 electronic mortise lock, or the TownSteel FME-2000 Series Grade 1 RFID mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. If you want wired electrified operation off an access control panel, the Command Access ML190 Series is a motorized storeroom-function mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU at 24VDC.
17) Is a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt a substitute for the Schlage L9465?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset - deadbolt only, keyed both sides, with no lever or latchbolt. The L9465 carries both a deadbolt and a latchbolt, with the latchbolt retracted by the lever from either side and a single keyed cylinder. If you need lever operation on the opening, the 4874 will not cover it; if the door already has separate lever trim and only needs a bolt, the 4874 is the narrower part.
18) Our door is 1-5/8 inch thick - can I use the Schlage L9465?
The L9465 is specified for 1-3/4 inch door thickness. For thinner leaves, the Alarm Lock Trilogy DL2700CR and DL3500CR are Grade 1 classroom-function electronic mortise locks covering 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt over the same 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch range. Note those are keypad classroom and deadbolt functions rather than a keyed storeroom lock.
19) Does the Schlage L9465 work for a behavioral health opening, or do I need ligature resistant trim?
The L9465 uses standard 03 lever trim on wrought rose or escutcheon. For anti-ligature openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with ligature resistant arch trim, both for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant. Those three are passage function, so they do not key the opening the way the L9465 does.
20) What should I order if the storeroom door only needs free passage and no key?
The L9465 is a keyed lock with a single cylinder. If the opening needs no key at all, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose on a 2-3/4 inch backset covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, with the 3810E the escutcheon version of the same lock.
21) We standardize on small format interchangeable cores - which mortise locks accept them?
The Schlage L9465 can be ordered with a B - SFIC less prep core or J - Schlage FSIC less core cylinder option, as well as L less conventional cylinder or P conventional 6-pin C keyway. Among comparable Grade 1 storeroom mortise locksets, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is offered with an interchangeable core option. The BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body is a separate lock body offering, in public entrance function.
22) Can I use an Emtek Memphis or Hamilton mortise entrance set in place of the L9465?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - they mount trim with no working latch or bolt. The Schlage L9465 is a Grade 1 commercial storeroom lock with a key-operated deadbolt and a working latchbolt. Use the Emtek sets only on inactive leaves.
23) What is the difference between the Schlage L9465 and the Schlage LE or ENGAGE mortise locks?
The L9465 is a mechanical L Series mortise lock, Grade 1, keyed with a conventional cylinder. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED, carrying a 3 hour fire rating. The LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 LE Series mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED for privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors. Choose electronic if the opening needs credentials or audit; choose the L9465 for a keyed mechanical storeroom.
24) Restroom door needs privacy, not a storeroom lock - what mortise lock do I use?
The L9465 is keyed and does not provide a privacy thumbturn. For bed/bath openings, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, matching the L9465 backset.
25) Office door where staff can lock the outside lever - is the L9465 right, or is there a better fit?
The L9465 keeps the latchbolt retractable by lever from either side at all times and locks only by throwing the deadbolt with a key, so it does not give an office-style lockable outside lever. The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
26) Can the L9465 be converted to another function later, or do I have to buy a new lock?
The L9000 uses a universal lock case that supports 10 different functions from a single lock body, so a number of function changes are made in the field rather than by replacing the case. Schlage publishes an L Series Universal Transformation Guide and a service manual covering that work. Which specific functions your case can become depends on the case you received, so check the transformation guide against the lock in hand.
27) Is there a version of this Schlage storeroom lock that shows locked or unlocked status?
Yes, the L Series offers an exclusive 180 degree visibility indicator as an option, readable from either approach down the corridor. Other option families on the same lock include Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim, tactile warning, anti-microbial coatings, and Gold Standard ligature resistant trim for behavioral health work.
