Schlage L9465P 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9465 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes, and only that thickness as standard. The L9465 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops into a standard ANSI mortise prep on a commercial door. Thicker doors are handled through the L Series options portfolio for different door thicknesses rather than by the standard part, so if your leaf is 2 inches or a nonstandard slab, that has to be specified as an option rather than assumed.
2) What does the L9465 closet/storeroom function actually do at the door?
Two separate bolts, working independently. The latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side at all times, so nobody ever gets locked in and the door is free to open from inside and out. Security comes from the deadbolt, which is thrown and withdrawn by key from the outside cylinder only. That makes it a storage room, closet, or supply room lock: staff walk in and out freely while the door is unlocked, and the room is deadbolted with a key when it is closed up. If you need the door secured against entry at all times with free egress, that is a different function, not the L9465.
3) Will the L9465 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It ships with its own strike, and that is the one to prep for. The standard strike is the Schlage 10-072, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box behind it. If your frame already carries a square corner ANSI strike of that size, the lock drops in. Radius corner frames or a 4-7/8 inch strike with a different lip projection will need the frame reworked or a different strike specified. The lip length matters as much as the size, because it sets how far the bolt is guided past the frame face.
4) What size mortise pocket does the L9465 lock case need in the door?
The case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, with a 1-1/4 by 8 inch armor front. That is the standard L Series mortise pocket, so on a door already prepped for an L9000 mortise lock the case goes straight in. On a door prepped for another manufacturer's mortise lock, compare the pocket depth and the front dimensions before you cut, because the armor front is what shows on the door edge.
5) Can I get the L9465 without a cylinder so I can use my own interchangeable core?
Yes, four cylinder options are offered. P supplies a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is the standard build. L comes less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. J is prepped for Schlage FSIC and ships less core. B is prepped for small format interchangeable core, less core. Pick B or J when your facility already runs an IC keying system and you want the core from your own stock. Note the security grading changes with the cylinder: the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security with the conventional cylinder, Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security with FSIC, and Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security with SFIC.
6) Can I have several L9465 storeroom locks all open with the same key?
Keying is chosen at order time. Keyed different is the standard, giving every lock its own key. Keyed alike puts multiple locks on one key, which is what you want when one maintenance key needs to open a run of storage rooms. You can also order it with no cylinder at all if you are pinning cores in house, and there is a field for special cylinder or keying requirements if you are being added to an existing master system. Standard cylinders come in the Schlage C keyway.
7) Is the Schlage L9465 approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3 hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are what an inspector looks for. The lock is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, meets ADA requirements, and meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and institutional work.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9465 storeroom mortise lock?
The Accentra 8805FL from the 8800 Series is the nearest peer: it is a Grade 1 storeroom function mortise lock with an Arcadia lever, matching the L9465's Grade 1 rating and storeroom function. The Cal-Royal NM8080 is another Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset, offered with an interchangeable core option and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness, which matches the L9465's 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The distinction to keep in mind is that the L9465 is a deadbolt function lock - the latchbolt retracts by lever from either side at all times and the deadbolt is thrown by key - so if the opening needs a separate keyed deadbolt inside the mortise case, confirm the peer offers that before swapping.
9) I need a storeroom mortise lock but the room does not need a deadbolt - what should I use instead of the L9465?
The Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors that uses an interchangeable core option, and the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with the Arcadia lever. Both cover the storeroom function without the keyed deadbolt actuation that defines the L9465, whose function description calls out both a deadbolt and a latchbolt with the deadbolt operated by key. On a stock room or supply closet where a latchbolt alone secures the door, dropping the deadbolt also removes the anti-saw pin bolt hardware the L9465 carries in its deadbolt functions.
10) The door is an office or classroom, not a storeroom - which mortise lock covers that instead?
For a classroom opening, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also 1-3/4 inch. For an office or entrance door, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch. All three share the L9465's Grade 1 rating and 1-3/4 inch door thickness, so the door prep carries across; what changes is the function, since the L9465 is a closet/storeroom function with key cylinder outside and lever only inside.
11) We want keypad or credential access on a storeroom door instead of a key - what mortise lock does that?
The Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in a storeroom function with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, which is the closest electrified match to the L9465's storeroom function. For standalone credential access, the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, and the TownSteel FME-2000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9465 is a non-electronic mechanical lock with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so access is by key and by keying scheme rather than by credential.
12) What mortise lock should we use on a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening rather than the L9465?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel with a passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim version, also Grade 1 heavy duty passage for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless. All three are passage function, so they do not key-lock the door the way the L9465 does with its single cylinder and key-thrown deadbolt. The L Series does offer ligature resistant trim options, so a keyed L Series solution for behavioral health can be specified with that trim rather than switching brands.
13) We use small format interchangeable cores across the facility - which mortise locks accept them?
The L9465 can be ordered with a B - SFIC less prep core or a J - Schlage FSIC less core cylinder option, alongside the L - less conventional cylinder and P - conventional 6-pin C keyway options. Note that with FSIC interchangeable cores the L9000 rates Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security, against Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security with the standard latch. On the peer side, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset offered with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a facility standardizing on one core system, that security grade shift is the detail worth putting in front of the spec writer.
14) What is the difference between the A, B, L and N rose and escutcheon options on a Schlage L Series lock?
That choice is purely what shows on the face of the door. A and B are wrought roses, small round trim around the lever. L is a full face escutcheon and N is an escutcheon, both long plates that cover more of the door face. Escutcheon trim is the usual pick when you are covering an old prep or matching existing escutcheon hardware down a corridor; roses are the cleaner, smaller look. Whichever you choose, both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish with a coordinating latch and strike.
15) Will the L9465 lever match the exit devices and other locks already in my building?
Yes, if those are Allegion. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a corridor running exit devices on the stair doors and mortise locks on the storage rooms can carry one lever design throughout. The 06 lever here is one of 33 lever designs in the family, and twelve finishes are offered from bright brass through matte black, oil rubbed bronze, satin chrome and satin stainless steel, so matching an existing finish schedule is a specify decision rather than a compromise.
16) What else could I use instead of a Schlage L9465 for a storeroom door?
Staying mechanical and Grade 1, the Accentra 8805FL from the 8800 Series is a storeroom function mortise lock with the Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. Both are storeroom function like the L9465. The real difference to weigh is the deadbolt: the L9465 pairs a free lever with a key operated deadbolt, so check the function description on any substitute rather than assuming storeroom means the same bolt arrangement everywhere.
17) I need a keypad or card reader on a storage room instead of a key. What mortise lock should I look at?
The L9465 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, so if credentials or codes are the requirement it is the wrong starting point. Options in the same mortise footprint include the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW, a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, the BEST 45HZ EZ Series electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock. Choose by how you want to manage access: standalone pushbutton codes, or a networked credential system.
18) Is a mortise lock like the L9465 worth it over a cylindrical lock on a high traffic storage door?
For a door that gets worked all day, yes. This is a heavy duty commercial lock with a cold rolled steel case, zinc dichromate plated, tested to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 for both operation and security. The deadbolt carries an anti saw pin to stop cut through, and a security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by pulling the levers off. It also meets ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40. The tradeoff is the door prep: a mortise pocket 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch has to be cut into the edge, which is more work than boring a cylindrical lock.
19) Is a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt a substitute for the Schlage L9465?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt in the 4870 Series with a 2-3/4 inch backset - it is a deadbolt only, with no lever trim and no latchbolt. The L9465 is a single cylinder keyed lever lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side at all times, with the deadbolt thrown by key, so it both latches the door and deadbolts it from one mortise case. The 4874 shares the 2-3/4 inch backset the L9465 uses, so it suits a door that already has separate latching hardware and needs only the bolt. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is likewise a deadbolt function mortise lock, not a lever lockset.
20) What is the difference between the Schlage L9465 and the BEST 45H mortise lock body?
The BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body in a public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCA is a heavy duty lockbody with an intruder function. Both are lock bodies, so trim is specified separately. The L9465 is also heavy duty, but ships as a complete keyed lever lock with the 06 lever, a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard, and a 10-072 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If the existing doors already carry trim and only the case is being replaced, a lock body is the piece being matched; if the whole assembly is going in, the L9465 arrives with lever, rose and strike coordinated.
21) Our doors are 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch - can we still use the L9465?
The L9465 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. Among mortise peers that state a wider range, the Hager 3800 Series passage locks 3810E and 3810S cover 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the Hager 3840S privacy lock covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Grade 1 classroom electronic mortise lock covers 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. Those peers carry passage, privacy and classroom functions rather than the L9465's closet/storeroom deadbolt function, so match the function to the opening before choosing on thickness alone.
22) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the Schlage L9465?
They are not a functional substitute. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - trim that mounts to the door without operating a bolt. The Falcon MESC600DT is likewise dummy escutcheon lever trim, made for M9900 Series exit devices. The L9465 is a keyed Grade 1 lock with a working latchbolt and a key-operated deadbolt, so dummy trim belongs on the inactive leaf of a pair, not on the secured opening the L9465 covers.
23) How does the Schlage L9465 compare to the Sargent 7925 for a dormitory or corridor door?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in the 7900 Series with a dormitory exit function, rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. It shares the L9465's Grade 1 rating, heavy duty level and single cylinder keying, and both carry a deadbolt operated by key. The functional split is the intended opening: the 7925 is a corridor/dormitory function, while the L9465 is closet/storeroom, with the latchbolt retracted by the lever from either side at all times and the deadbolt thrown by key. On a resident room door where the occupant needs to secure from inside, the dormitory function is what the drawing usually calls for.
24) Is a Schlage LE or CO electronic mortise lock the same thing as an L9465?
They are different products for different openings. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile enabled deadbolt with LED on Greenwich trim, right hand, with a 3 hour fire rating. The LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors, and the CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader in a privacy function on 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9465 is a mechanical, non-electronic Grade 1 closet/storeroom lock keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, which is what a door with no power or network at the frame calls for.
25) The closet does not need to be keyed at all - is there a simpler mortise lock than the L9465?
Yes. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, in the MA Series, for a hall or closet that only needs to latch. The Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose and a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors, matching the L9465's 2-3/4 inch backset, and the 3810E is the escutcheon version. The Hager 3850E is a non-keyed office function mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on the same 2-3/4 inch backset. The L9465 is keyed with a single cylinder and adds a key-thrown deadbolt, which is what to keep if the contents behind the door need securing.
26) Can I upgrade the L9465 cylinder to a high security key that cannot be duplicated?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on L Series mortise locks, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder in place of the standard conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. That is the route when you need patented key control on a stockroom or a controlled substances closet. Order it as the cylinder option rather than trying to swap in an aftermarket cylinder later.
27) Does the Schlage L9465 need to be ordered handed?
The trim configuration is symmetrical, with the same lever, rose and finish on both sides of the door and a coordinating latch and strike. What you do need to settle before ordering is the cylinder option, the rose or escutcheon style, the finish, and the keying, since those are the four choices that define the part you receive.
