Schlage LV9044 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage LV9044 mortise privacy lock fit my door, and what backset does it need?
The LV9044 is a single-thickness device: it's built for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial thickness. Backset is 2-3/4 inches, and the lock is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand openings. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the standard LV9044 configuration won't be right, though the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
2) How does the coin turn on the Schlage LV9044 work if someone locks themselves in the bathroom?
The outside coin turn is the emergency release. Rotating it from the corridor side unlocks the outside lever so staff can get in. Inside, the occupant locks with the thumbturn, and the lock releases automatically when they turn the inside lever or close the door, so it can't be left locked by accident. Note this is an unlock-only override, not a key: there's no cylinder in the LV9044, so nothing here keys into a master system.
3) Will the Schlage LV9044 latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
Depends on what's prepped. The LV9044 ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. Latchbolt is a 3/4 inch throw stainless steel bolt with an anti-friction tongue. If your frame already carries an ANSI 4-7/8 inch square corner mortise strike prep, which is what most hollow metal commercial frames have, the supplied strike drops straight in. Round corner or T-strike preps need a different strike. Lip length matters too: the standard 1-3/16 inch lip assumes a fairly typical stop-to-edge dimension, so measure it on a deep-reveal frame.
4) Is the Schlage LV9044 approved for a fire rated door?
The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how an inspector confirms it in the field. Keep in mind privacy functions lock the outside lever, so on a rated door check that the opening's egress and access requirements allow a privacy function before you spec it.
5) Does the Schlage LV9044 meet ANSI Grade 1 and ADA for a commercial spec?
Grade 1 on both counts. The L9000 series is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Grade 1 Security and Grade 1 Operational, and it's rated heavy duty for commercial use. It meets ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and many state jobs, and carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings.
6) Will the Schlage LV9044 match the levers on the exit devices and other locks in my building?
Yes, and that's the usual reason people pick it. L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300, and LT, so a corridor with exit devices at the stair doors and mortise locks at the offices can carry one lever design and one finish throughout. Pick a lever from 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17, or Latitude and a finish, and hold both across the fleet.
7) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage LV9044 mortise privacy lock from another manufacturer?
The Hager 3840S is the nearest straight equivalent. Both are Grade 1 mortise locks with a Privacy/Bed/Bath function and a 2-3/4 inch backset. The LV9044 carries a 1-3/4 inch door thickness and the Hager 3840S covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The difference to weigh is the outside trim: the LV9044 is the Vandlgard version, where the outside lever free-wheels rather than transmitting force to the lock case, and it carries an outside coin turn so the room can be unlocked from the corridor side. The Hager 3840S is a standard privacy lock without that free-wheeling outside lever.
8) What Grade 1 mortise privacy lock should I use if I need a deadbolt instead of a latch-only privacy function?
Use the Cal-Royal NM8440, a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage LV9044 privacy function works off the latchbolt: the latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked by the inside thumbturn or the outside coin turn, and it releases when the inside lever is turned, the door is closed, or the outside coin turn is rotated. If the opening calls for a separately thrown bolt at the privacy side, the NM8440 is the one to specify.
9) The door needs to be keyed, not privacy. What mortise lock replaces the LV9044 on that opening?
Go to a keyed function. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. For an office or entrance opening, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. The LV9044 is a non-keyed lock and accepts no cylinder, so none of these are trim swaps - they are a different lock body and a different order.
10) Is the Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body a drop-in alternative to the Schlage LV9044?
No, and the backset is the reason. The Baldwin 6301 lever by lever mortise lock body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset and is an entrance/apartment function for doors 1-3/4 inch and over. The LV9044 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset and is a privacy function. A different backset means a different mortise pocket and a different cross bore location, so the two do not interchange in an existing prep. The Baldwin 6310 is likewise a 2-1/2 inch backset entrance/storeroom body.
11) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage LV9044 mortise lock?
Three choices beyond the function. Lever design: 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17, or LAT Latitude, and note that the 12 lever is ordered handed, left or right. Rose or escutcheon: A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon. Finish: ten of them, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. No keying to specify, since it's non-keyed.
12) Can I cut the pocket for a Schlage LV9044 into an existing door, and how big is the lock case?
The mortise case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, with a 1-1/4 by 8 inch armor front. If the door already carries a Schlage L9000 or another lock on the standard ANSI mortise prep with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the LV9044 goes back in the same pocket. Cutting fresh, work from the Schlage L Series templates rather than scaling off the case dimensions. The case body is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating.
13) Should I use a mortise privacy lock like the Schlage LV9044 or an electronic lock on a restroom or dorm bath door?
For a restroom or bed/bath opening, mechanical privacy is usually the right call: nothing to power, nothing to audit, and the LV9044 is fully mechanical with no electronics. Go electronic only when you need credentials or an audit trail on that door. Schlage's own CO-100 mortise lock is offered in a privacy function with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors at Grade 1 if you want that, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is a pushbutton keyless mortise lock. Neither gives you the free-wheeling abuse protection the Vandlgard trim does.
14) What are the alternatives to a Schlage LV9044 if I need a Grade 1 mortise privacy lock from another brand?
Two straightforward substitutes. The Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with the same 2-3/4 inch backset, covering 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, so it handles slightly thicker doors than the Schlage. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 heavy duty privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt, for 1-3/4 inch doors. Neither carries a free-wheeling clutched outside lever, so on a high-abuse opening the Vandlgard trim is the reason to stay with the LV9044.
15) Can a Schlage LV9044 be keyed into my building's master key system?
No. The LV9044 is a non-keyed privacy function with no cylinder, so there's nothing to key and it won't appear in a master key schedule. Access from the corridor side is the coin turn only. If that opening needs to be on the master system, you want a keyed L Series function instead, a storeroom or office function with a cylinder, and Primus 20-500 Series cylinders are the UL437 listed option on the L Series if you're specifying high security.
16) For a behavioral health or patient room, is the LV9044 the right mortise lock or should I use ligature resistant trim?
For a ligature resistant opening, specify a lock built for it: the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset with a passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless steel ligature resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so they do not lock. The LV9044 matches them on Grade 1 heavy duty commercial construction and offers the Vandlgard free-wheeling outside lever, but its levers are the standard L Series lever styles.
17) I want a keypad privacy mortise lock instead of a mechanical one. What is the option?
The Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a standalone electronic mortise lock with a privacy function and a keypad reader, Grade 1, heavy duty, for 1-3/4 inch doors. It matches the LV9044 on grade, duty level, privacy function and door thickness, but adds credential-based access at the keypad. The LV9044 is a non-electronic, non-keyed lock, so it takes no power, no programming and no batteries.
18) The bathroom door does not need to lock at all. Is there a simpler mortise lock than the LV9044?
Yes. For a door that only needs to latch, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim and a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors. Neither has any locking mechanism. The LV9044 exists specifically to give the room side a thumbturn with an outside coin turn release, so drop to a passage lock only where nobody needs to secure the door from inside.
19) Can I order just a thumbturn to convert an existing mortise lock to privacy the way the LV9044 works?
No. A mortise thumbturn such as the Sargent 130KB or the Sargent 130W is trim only - the 130KB is a standard mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series and the 130W is a thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series. Neither contains a lock case. The LV9044 is a complete Grade 1 mortise lock with a 4-7/16 inch by 3-5/8 inch by 1 inch case, a 3/4 inch stainless steel latch with anti-friction tongue and a 10-072 box strike. Buy a thumbturn only when the lock case already in the door supports the privacy function and you are replacing damaged trim.
20) Emtek mortise entrance locksets look similar to the LV9044. Are they an alternative?
They are not. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - fixed trim with no operating latch. They are used on inactive leaves and closet faces where the door does not need to latch. The LV9044 is a working Grade 1 mortise lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked. If the door swings and latches, a dummy set will not serve it.
21) What is the difference between the Schlage LV9044 and the Schlage Electronics LE Series mortise locks?
Grade and power. The LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors with a 3 hour fire rating. The LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED on Greenwich trim, right hand, also 3 hour fire rated. Both are credential-driven and handed or trim-specific. The LV9044 is Grade 1, non-electronic, non-handed, and works entirely off the inside thumbturn and outside coin turn.
22) The opening is a dormitory or corridor door, not a bed or bath. What mortise lock fits that instead of the LV9044?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, in the 7900 Series. That function is built for corridor and dormitory openings where the occupant throws a deadbolt and exit is always free. The LV9044 privacy function has no cylinder at all and no deadbolt in its operation - the outside lever locks by inside thumbturn and releases at the outside coin turn, which is what a bed or bath door wants and not what a dorm room entry wants.
23) Is a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt an alternative to the LV9044 for a bathroom?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series - it matches the LV9044 backset but it is a bolt only, with a cylinder on both sides and no latch and no lever. A washroom door needs a latch to hold it closed and free egress from inside. The LV9044 carries a 3/4 inch throw stainless steel latchbolt with anti-friction tongue and locks by thumbturn from the room side.
24) Which mortise privacy lock should I standardize on across a facility with mixed door thicknesses?
Compare the ranges before you standardize. The Schlage LV9044 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door, the Hager 3840S privacy lock covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 privacy lockset is for 1-3/4 inch. All three are Grade 1 privacy mortise locks, so on a facility built entirely on 1-3/4 inch leaves any of the three standardizes cleanly. Where thicker leaves appear, the Hager 3840S is the one whose published range extends past 1-3/4 inch. The LV9044 also offers ten finishes from bright brass through satin stainless steel and matte black, which helps match existing hardware across a building.
25) Will a mortise lock rated for 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors work where the LV9044 is specified?
Check the leaf before you commit. The Alarm Lock Trilogy DL2700CR classroom lock, DL3500CR classroom lock and DL4500 deadbolt are Grade 1 electronic mortise locks with a 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch door thickness range. The LV9044 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, which falls inside that range, so a nominal 1-3/4 inch leaf suits either. The functions do not line up though - those three are classroom, classroom and deadbolt, against the LV9044 privacy function.
26) I need a mortise lock body only, with no trim. Is the LV9044 sold that way?
For a body-only order look at the BEST 45H Series, a heavy duty mortise lock body with public entrance function and field reversible operation, or the BEST 45HCA Series heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function. Both are lock bodies specified apart from trim. The LV9044 is ordered as a complete lock: lever style, rose or escutcheon design, and finish are all part of the selection, with wrought rose, cast/forged escutcheon and wrought escutcheon designs among the choices.
