Schlage 09-451 06L 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What locks does the Schlage 09-451 trim pack fit?
The 09-451 is Schlage L Series lever trim for the egress side of L/LV9050, L/LV9056, L/LV9456, L9473, L/LV9480 and L/LV9485 mortise locks. Check the function stamped on the lock case before ordering: if it is not one of those, the 09-451 is not the trim for it. It is a replacement trim part rather than a complete lockset, so it goes onto a mortise case that is already in the door or ordered separately.
2) Will the Schlage 09-451 L Series trim fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly the opening it is built for. The 09-451 trim pack is specified at 1-3/4 inch door thickness with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise combination. Schlage builds L Series locks for other door thicknesses as an option, so if the lock already in the door was specified for a thicker leaf, this pack will not line up and you need the trim matched to that thickness.
3) What do I need to specify when ordering a Schlage 09-451 trim pack?
Four things: finish, lever design, escutcheon style, and hand where the design calls for one. Lever designs are 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17, 18 and Latitude. Escutcheon is either L full face or N. The 12 lever is the design ordered left hand or right hand; the others are ordered without a hand. If you are matching trim already on the building, the escutcheon style is the one to get right, because that is what changes the shape of the plate on the door face.
4) Is Schlage 09-451 trim handed, or does one part work on both left and right hand doors?
Handing only comes into it on one design. The 12 lever is ordered as left hand or right hand, so you need to know which way the door swings before you buy it. The 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17, 18 and Latitude designs on the L Series trim pack are ordered without a hand and go on either swing.
5) Can I get lever trim that matches the Von Duprin exit devices on the same corridor?
All Schlage L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. That means one lever design and one finish carries across the mortise-locked doors, the exit device openings and the electronic locks in the same building. Choose the design and BHMA finish once, then order the 09-451 trim pack in that same combination for the mortise doors.
6) Can Schlage L Series trim go on a fire rated door?
Fire door work is fine here. The L Series mortise locks this trim serves are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors to 4' x 10' and pairs to 8' x 10'. The letter F and the UL symbol on the latch front are how you confirm the lock already hung in the door is a listed one. The only functions excluded from the 3-hour listing are L9076 and L9077, and neither is among the functions the 09-451 trims.
7) Does Schlage L Series lever trim meet a Grade 1 and ADA spec for an institutional or government job?
The L9000 mortise locks behind this trim are tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Grade 1 security and operational, and the L Series levers meet ADA requirements. Schlage also lists the line as meeting the Buy American Act, which is usually the second box to tick on a federal or state project. One caveat for a spec writer: with interchangeable core cylinders the security rating is Grade 2, while a concealed shell cylinder holds A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security.
8) Our building is standardized on 626 satin chrome hardware. Can I get this L Series trim to match?
626 satin chrome is one of the finishes offered on the 09-451 trim pack, along with 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. Finish is chosen per pack, so a portfolio standardized on one BHMA number stays on it every time a lever gets replaced.
9) Can I change the lever style on an existing Schlage L9050 without replacing the whole mortise lock?
Yes, provided the case is one of the covered functions. The 09-451 replaces the egress-side lever and escutcheon on L/LV9050, L/LV9056, L/LV9456, L9473, L/LV9480 and L/LV9485 mortise locks, so a bent, worn or dated lever comes off without pulling the case out of the door and redoing the prep. Ten designs are available, from the 01 through 18 numbered levers to the Latitude, and the finish is chosen at the same time.
10) Can a Cal-Royal CALDOR238 be used in place of a Schlage 09-451 trim pack?
No, and it is worth knowing why before the order goes out, because the two parts do different jobs. The Schlage 09-451 is lock trim: the lever and escutcheon that dress a Schlage L Series mortise lock already built as one of the L/LV9050, L/LV9056, L/LV9456, L9473, L/LV9480 or L/LV9485 egress functions. It carries no latch and sets no function of its own. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 is a CAL101 dormitory dead latch, a complete latching unit that carries dormitory function in the unit itself. If what you are doing is re-levering or refinishing an existing L Series mortise lock, the CALDOR238 does not attach to that mortise case and leaves the job unfinished.
11) Some doors in my building have Cal-Royal dormitory dead latches. Can I order Schlage 09-451 levers to make those doors match the rest?
