Schlage 09-455 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to specify left hand or right hand on Schlage 09-455 lever trim?
Only on the 12 lever. That design is ordered left hand or right hand and has to match the swing of the door. The rest of the designs in the 09-455 pack, 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17, 18 and the LAT Latitude lever, carry no hand designation and cover either swing. Order a 12 in the wrong hand and the lever return points away from the door instead of toward it.
2) My other doors have escutcheon trim. Will the Schlage 09-455 match them?
It will not. The 09-455 ships with a wrought rose, either the A or the B rose design, so you get a rose behind the lever and not a full escutcheon plate. Against an escutcheon on the adjacent opening the difference reads immediately. The L Series runs five rose designs and three escutcheon designs, so if the building is standardized on escutcheon trim you want an escutcheon pack for the 9040 or 9440 case instead.
3) Can I get Schlage 09-455 trim to match the exit devices and other levers already in my building?
Yes, and the match goes past finish. Stocked finishes are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On design, every L Series lever suites with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT lines, so a corridor mixing mortise locks and exit devices can carry one lever design end to end.
4) Do the levers in the Schlage 09-455 pack meet ADA?
They do. L Series levers meet ADA requirements, which is why lever trim and not a knob is the default on commercial openings. For California work, L Series levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. Every design in the 09-455 pack is a lever, Latitude included, so there is no knob option here to get wrong on a code job.
5) Does the Schlage 09-455 trim leave exposed screws on the inside lever?
No. L Series inside levers use a locking lever bushing, so nothing shows on the lever face. That matters on the 9040 and 9440 functions, where the inside trim is the side the occupant is looking at. Install is the standard L Series mortise prep, 2-3/4 inch backset in a 1-3/4 inch door, and the trim is Grade 1 commercial hardware rather than a residential-weight part.
6) What do I need to specify to order the correct Schlage 09-455 trim pack?
Four decisions. Lever design: 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17, 18 or LAT Latitude. Rose: A or B wrought rose. Finish: 605 through 643E. And hand, but only if you chose the 12 lever. Before any of that, confirm the case in the door is a 9040, LV9040, 9440 or LV9440, because the 09-455 is trim only and will not convert a lock case from one function to another.
7) Is the Cal-Royal CALDOR238 dormitory dead latch an equivalent replacement for a Schlage 09-455 trim pack?
No, they are two different kinds of part. The Schlage 09-455 is a trim pack for the L/LV9040 and L/LV9440 mortise locks, so what comes in the box is the lever and rose hardware that mounts to a mortise lock case already hung in the door, sized for a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch door. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 is a dormitory dead latch carrying a dormitory function, so it is the latching unit itself rather than trim that dresses an existing case. If the mortise case in the door is sound and the levers are worn or damaged, the 09-455 is the part that addresses that; if the latching mechanism is what needs replacing, the CALDOR238 answers a different job entirely.
8) The opening needs a dormitory function - will ordering a Schlage 09-455 give me that?
It will not, because function on the Schlage L Series is set by the lock case rather than by the trim. The 09-455 is the trim pack specified for the L/LV9040 and L/LV9440 cases, so ordering it selects lever style, rose, and finish for a lock whose function is already determined by the case in the door.
