What is Schlage commercial door hardware?

Schlage is Allegion's commercial mechanical and electronic lock brand — cylindrical leversets, mortise locks, deadbolts, and electronic access-control locks used across institutional, healthcare, education, and commercial construction. It's an industry-standard specification choice for Grade 1 openings.

Within an Allegion spec, Schlage locks pair natively with Von Duprin exit devices, LCN closers, Ives hinges and trim, and Schlage Primus/Everest keying. That native compatibility is why architects lean on it as a full-opening solution.

What does the Schlage commercial lineup include?

The commercial catalog splits into four buckets: cylindrical locks (ND, ALX), mortise locks (L-Series), deadbolts (B-Series), and electronic locks (CO, NDEB, XE360). Every mechanical family is available across passage, privacy, entrance, classroom, storeroom, and institutional functions.

ZenSupply stocks the full Schlage commercial mechanical range including Schlage commercial mortise locks, cylindricals, and deadbolts, plus keying components and cylinders. High-security openings step up to Primus XP or Everest 29 restricted keyways.

What is the difference between Schlage ND-Series and ALX-Series lever locks?

ND-Series is Grade 1 per A156.2 — 800,000 cycles minimum. ALX-Series is Grade 2 — 400,000 cycles minimum. That's the core split: ND for institutional and high-traffic openings, ALX for light-commercial doors where Grade 2 is acceptable. ALX replaced the older AL-Series; if you're working from legacy documentation that still calls out AL, the ALX equivalent is the current spec.

The Schlage ND80PD storeroom function is the single most-specified variant — outside always locked, key retracts latch, inside always free egress. For a classroom, spec the Schlage ND70PD. Institutional openings (both sides always locked, key both sides) use the Schlage ND82PD.

On the ALX side, the ALX70 and Schlage ALX80 mirror the ND functions at the Grade 2 threshold. Browse the Schlage ALX-Series Grade 2 cylindrical locks or the full cylindrical lever locks inventory to compare functions side by side.

When should you spec Schlage L-Series mortise locks?

Schlage L9080 Storeroom Mortise Lock - Grade 1, 01 Lever with Escutcheon Trim
Schlage L9080 Storeroom Mortise Lock - Grade 1, 01 Lever with Escutcheon Trim

Mortise when the opening sees heavy abuse, requires a deadbolt integrated with the latch, or the door thickness and aesthetic demand a full lock case. L-Series is Grade 1 per A156.13 Operational — 1,000,000 cycles minimum. Standard mortise pocket is 6" H × 4" D × 1" W.

The Schlage L9080 storeroom and Schlage L9070 classroom are the two most-specified L variants.

L-Series also has an electrified variant (L9080EL/EU with fail-safe/fail-secure and request-to-exit) that drops into the same mortise prep — useful when access control is added later without re-prepping the door.

What is the difference between Schlage B-Series deadbolt grades?

Schlage B-Series commercial deadbolts are available in Grade 1 and Grade 2 per BHMA standards. Verified Grade 1 models include the B660P (single-cylinder) and B662P (double-cylinder); Grade 2 models include the B560P and B562. Per A156.5, Grade 1 auxiliary locks/deadbolts = 250,000 cycles minimum, Grade 2 = 100,000, Grade 3 = 25,000. Deadbolts cycle far less than primary locks, which is why the A156.5 thresholds are lower than A156.2 cylindricals.

The Schlage B660P single-cylinder is the standard Grade 1 commercial deadbolt. Double-cylinder (B662P) is used where glass is adjacent to the lock — but check local code, some jurisdictions restrict double-cylinder on egress doors. Shop Schlage B6/7/800-Series Grade 1 deadbolts for the full range.

Which Schlage electronic lock is best for access control?

Depends on whether the opening needs to report to a head-end system or just control who gets in. Three families cover it:

  • CO-100 — standalone keypad-only. No network, no credential reader. The volume choice for a single opening that needs code-based access.
  • CO-200 — standalone with a proximity or proximity-plus-keypad reader, in cylindrical, mortise, and exit-device-trim form factors, across privacy, office, and classroom/storeroom functions.
  • NDEB / XE360 — wireless, mobile-enabled Grade 1 and Grade 2 locks with Bluetooth and NFC credential readers on Allegion's ENGAGE platform, for openings managed from a phone or a cloud tenant rather than a wired panel.

Start with CO-100 if the requirement is "keep this door locked and let the right people in." Step to CO-200 when the owner wants credentials instead of codes, and to NDEB or XE360T when openings need to be managed remotely. Older specifications may call out the hardwired and 900 MHz AD-Series; those openings are typically re-specified to CO or the ENGAGE wireless families today.

Battery life on the wireless families typically runs 1-2 years at medium traffic (20-100 entries/day), shorter at high-traffic openings. See our electronic keypad locks category for stocked models.

What exit devices and closers pair with Schlage locks?

LCN 4040XP-POWDER Heavy Duty Surface-Mounted Door Closer with 10 Million Cycle Certification and Powder Coated Finish
LCN 4040XP-POWDER Heavy Duty Surface-Mounted Door Closer with 10 Million Cycle Certification and Powder Coated Finish

Native Allegion pairing: Schlage locks + Von Duprin exit devices + LCN closers + Ives hinges. All four brands share Allegion's spec ecosystem and cross-reference cleanly in CSI 08 71 00 hardware schedules.

For exit devices, the Von Duprin 99 rim device is the spec crown for high-traffic openings — Grade 1 per A156.3 (1,000,000 cycles minimum), fire-rated and non-fire versions. The Von Duprin 98 is the same device with a smooth pushpad. Narrow-stile aluminum storefront gets the 33A/35A series. Shop rim panic exit devices for the full lineup.

Reminder on NFPA 80: no mechanical dogging on fire-rated exit devices. Electric dogging (Von Duprin EL/QEL) is permitted on rated assemblies with proper listing.

Which door closers should you spec with Schlage openings?

LCN 4040XP is the industry-standard heavy-duty surface closer for institutional openings — Grade 1 per A156.4 (1,000,000 cycles minimum). For most new specs today, the current heavy-duty platform is the LCN 4041 with delayed action. Parallel-arm applications use the LCN 4111.

Medium-duty openings step down to the LCN 1461. Light-duty interior gets the LCN 1250.

ADA 2010 §404.2.9 caps interior opening force at 5 lbf. Fire doors are exempt (they must close and latch), and exterior doors have no ADA maximum. Spec accordingly — a fire-rated exit at 8-10 lbf is compliant; the same force on an interior office door is not. Full range at surface mounted door closers.

How Schlage compares to Sargent and Corbin Russwin

All three are Grade 1 institutional platforms. Schlage (Allegion) is the most commonly specified in K-12 and healthcare in North America. Sargent (Assa Abloy) is the go-to for federal and higher-education specs — 8200-series mortise and 80-series exit are widely repeat-specified. Corbin Russwin (Assa Abloy) fills the same slot with ML2000 mortise locks and matching exit devices.

We stock Schlage, not Sargent or Corbin Russwin, so the note below is for reading a spec you have been handed rather than a buying recommendation. The head-to-head decision usually comes down to (1) which brand the owner has invested in for keying and (2) which distributor holds a local service commitment. Schlage's advantage is native compatibility with Von Duprin/LCN/Ives when the whole opening is Allegion — one warranty, one rep, one submittal package.

Choose Schlage when:

  • The owner's existing keying is Everest 29 or Primus
  • You're speccing a full Allegion opening (Schlage + Von Duprin + LCN + Ives)
  • The project needs standalone electronic access control (CO-100, CO-200) or ENGAGE-platform wireless locks (NDEB, XE360)
  • K-12 or healthcare with heavy ND80PD / L9080 volume

How do you write a Schlage spec — grade, finish, keying?

A full spec line names the model, function, lever design, finish (BHMA code), and keying/cylinder. Example: Schlage ND80PD RHO 626 — Grade 1 storeroom, Rhodes lever, satin chrome, Everest 29 C123 keyway, keyed to owner's system.

Common finish codes: 605 (bright brass), 606 (satin brass), 612 (satin bronze), 613 (oil-rubbed bronze), 625 (bright chrome), 626 (satin chrome — the institutional standard), 630 (satin stainless). Confirm ADA §404.2.7 lever operability — no tight grasping or pinching required.

For keying, decide up front: standard Classic keyway, Everest 29 (patent-controlled), or Primus XP (high-security, restricted, UL 437 listed). If the opening needs an electric strike or mag lock, cross-reference the commercial electric strikes catalog — HES 1006 and 9500 are the common pairings with ND and L Series locks.
