Manufacturer Resources

Replacing a breaker in an Eaton Type BR panel

Type BR breakers plug onto the bus of an Eaton Type BR loadcenter and will not seat in a Type CH panel or another manufacturer's loadcenter. Check the label inside the panel door before ordering.

  • The label inside the panel door says Type BR.
  • Open full-size spaces side by side: two for a two-pole breaker, three for a three-pole.
  • Breaker amperage matches the wire in the wall: #14 takes 15A, #12 takes 20A.
  • Whether the circuit needs arc fault (AFCI) or ground fault (GFCI) protection.

Replacing a breaker in an Eaton Type CH panel

CH breakers are built for Eaton Type CH loadcenters and do not interchange with Type BR. The Eaton CL Series 2-Pole Circuit Breaker 120/240V 10 kAIC Classified Replacement System is also listed for Square D Homeline, GE Type THQ and Crouse-Hinds Type MP panels.

  • The label inside the panel door says Type CH.
  • In a Square D Homeline or GE Type THQ panel, the label allows classified (other-brand) breakers.
  • Amperage matches the conductor and load, not just the breaker being pulled.
  • Shunt trip (remote trip for a fire alarm or elevator) is factory-built: order it up front.

Replacing a breaker in a commercial or industrial panelboard

Bolt-on breakers fasten to the bus with screws instead of clipping onto a stab, and they will not seat in a plug-on load center. Bolt-on is standard on commercial and industrial panelboards.

  • The panelboard takes bolt-on breakers screwed to the bus, or is equipment built for Type QC.
  • Fault current at the panel: BAB and QC interrupt 10 kAIC (10,000 amperes), QBHW 22 kAIC.
  • Pole count, amperage and terminal type off the breaker coming out.
  • Remote shunt trip needed? It is ordered with the breaker, not added later.

  • For the BJ Frame breaker, the interior is prepped for a plug-on main, not bolt-on.
  • For the lug kit, a Pow-R-Xpress PRL1X/2X or PRL1A/2A panelboard.
  • Fault current at the panel: BJ Frame is rated 10 kAIC, Pow-R-Xpress kit 35 or 65 kAIC.

Setting a new service panel or subpanel

A main breaker loadcenter puts the service disconnect and overcurrent protection in the panel, for service entrance work. A main lug loadcenter has no main and relies on a breaker upstream, which suits a subpanel.

  • Single-phase 120/240V or three-phase 208Y/120V at the service.
  • Breakers you stock: BR panels take BR breakers, CH panels take CH.
  • Indoor or outdoor enclosure for the wall it goes on.
  • Fault current: the CH Main Lug Loadcenter is rated 25 kAIC, the BR 125A main lug 10 kAIC.

Metering a house, a tenant or a commercial service

Match the meter equipment to the service: one meter position or many, single-phase or three-phase, metered directly or through current transformers. Utilities set meter socket rules, so confirm with yours whether it wants ringless (no sealing ring) and bypass.

  • Ringless (cover locks with no sealing ring) or ring-type, as your serving utility requires.
  • Bypass required? A lever bypass lets the meter come out without dropping power.
  • Meter positions needed: one service or several tenants.
  • Phase and voltage at the service transformer.

Putting a disconnect beside the equipment or at the service

Either Eaton Air Conditioning Disconnect pullout is non-fused and isolates a condenser already protected by the panel breaker. Where the nameplate gives a maximum fuse size, the Eaton DH Heavy-Duty Fusible Safety Switch, Three-Pole, 600V carries the overcurrent protection itself.

  • Nameplate: maximum breaker size or maximum fuse size.
  • Wire size against the lug range before buying.
  • Enclosure for the location: NEMA 3R outdoors, NEMA 1 indoor dry only.
  • System voltage: the NEMA 3R galvanized pullout is 120/240V, so a 480V rooftop unit takes the DH 600V switch.

Questions we get on Eaton breakers, panels, meters and disconnects

Q: What is the difference between the pigtail and plug-on neutral versions of the Eaton BR AFCI?

A: Two wiring styles, same protection. The pigtail versions (BRN115AF at 15A, BRN120AF at 20A) carry a white neutral wire you land on the panel neutral bar, and they work in any Type BR loadcenter. The plug-on neutral versions (BRP115AF at 15A, BRP120AF at 20A) pick the neutral up off a neutral bus bar built into the panel, so there is no pigtail to route, but the loadcenter has to be a BR panel equipped for plug-on neutral. If you are replacing a breaker in an older BR panel, order the pigtail.

Q: Will an Eaton BR3 three-pole breaker fit my existing panel?

A: Only if the panel is an Eaton Type BR loadcenter. These are plug-on breakers built specifically for Type BR bus, so they will not seat correctly in a Type CH panel or in another manufacturer's loadcenter. Check the label inside the panel door for "Type BR" before ordering.

Q: Does a GFCI breaker need a neutral connection, or does it just land the hot?

A: It needs both. A GFCI breaker works by comparing current on the hot and the neutral, so the circuit neutral lands on the breaker itself, not on the panel neutral bar, and the breaker's own pigtail goes to the neutral bar. Miss that and the breaker trips the moment you energize it. The BRN GFCI ships with that pigtail attached.

Q: Will an Eaton CH310 three-pole breaker fit a BR or Cutler-Hammer Type BR loadcenter?

A: No. The CH three-pole breakers are built for Type CH loadcenters only. Type CH and Type BR use different bus and mounting arrangements, so a CH330 or CH350 will not seat correctly in a BR panel. Check the label inside your panel door for the accepted breaker type before ordering.

Q: Can the Eaton Pow-R-Stock ED breaker kit be installed at the bottom of the panel instead of the top?

A: Top or bottom, both are supported. The mounting method on the ED kit covers top and bottom positions, which matters when the service feed enters from below and you do not want to run the conductors the full height of the enclosure to reach a top-fed main.

Q: Will an Eaton QBHW breaker fit my existing panel, or do I need a specific type of panelboard?

A: The QBHW is a bolt-on breaker, not a plug-in. It fastens to the bus with screws rather than clipping onto a stab, so it needs a panelboard with bolt-on bus provisions. If the panel you are working in takes plug-on breakers that snap over a stab, a QBHW will not seat in it. Bolt-on is standard on commercial and industrial panelboards, which is where this breaker belongs.

Q: Does a main lug loadcenter need a separate main breaker, or is it a main breaker panel?

A: Main lug means no main breaker in the panel. The feeder lands directly on the lugs and overcurrent protection has to come from upstream, typically the main breaker in the service equipment or a feeder breaker in the panel ahead of it. That makes the CH main lug the right choice for a subpanel: a detached garage feed, a shop, a tenant panel fed from house main. If this is the service disconnect at the meter, you want a main breaker loadcenter instead.

Q: How many tenants will the Eaton 1MP5206R meter pack serve, and at what amperage each?

A: Five metering sockets, each rated 125A at 120/240V, single-phase in and single-phase out. That covers five separate tenant services off one assembly, which is the typical setup for a five-unit apartment building or a small strip of light commercial suites. If you need more than five positions you need a different socket count, not an add-on to this unit.

Q: What does the lever bypass on this Eaton meter socket actually let an electrician do?

A: The lever bypass lets you shunt current around the meter socket jaws so the meter can be pulled and reset without dropping power to the load. For a property manager with occupied units or a retail tenant, that means meter swaps and testing happen without a service outage. It is the feature most commercial utilities require on 200A single-position service.

Q: Do I need to buy fuses for the Eaton ACD60R air conditioning disconnect?

A: No fuses. The ACD60R is a non-fusible pullout, so the pullout block simply breaks the circuit when removed and there is nothing to replace when it is put back. Overcurrent protection has to come from upstream at the panel breaker. If your condenser nameplate calls for maximum fuse size rather than a maximum breaker, you want a fusible disconnect instead of this one.

Q: Will an Eaton DPF221R or DPF222R AC disconnect work for my outdoor condensing unit?

A: Both Eaton DPF pullout disconnects are built for outdoor equipment: the enclosure is NEMA 3R galvanized steel, which is the rating for rain, sleet and ice exposure on an outdoor wall or condenser pad. Rated 120/240V, with a 10 kAIC interrupt rating. Pick DPF221R for a 30A unit and DPF222R for 60A, matching the amperage on the equipment nameplate.

Q: Does the Eaton DH safety switch come with fuses installed?

A: No. It is a fusible switch, meaning it has the Class H fuse clips, but fuses are sized and bought separately to match the load and your overcurrent coordination. Order fuses rated to the switch amperage: 30A, 60A or 100A depending on the build.

Q: Should I order a fusible or non-fusible Eaton DH safety switch?

A: Both are available on the DH heavy-duty line, along with a fusible-with-neutral version. Go fusible when the switch has to provide the overcurrent protection itself, which is typical at a service disconnect or where a motor branch circuit needs its own fuses. Go non-fusible when the circuit is already protected by a breaker upstream and the switch is only there as a local means of disconnect at the equipment, the usual case for an AC unit or a rooftop motor within sight of the machine. Fusible with neutral is what you want when the circuit carries a neutral you need to land and isolate as well.

Q: Is 35 kAIC enough, or do I need the 65 kAIC version of the Eaton main breaker kit?

A: That is decided by the available fault current at the panel, not by the breaker. The Pow-R-Xpress kit is offered in 35 kAIC and 65 kAIC. If the utility transformer and conductor run put more than 35 kA of available fault current at the panelboard, the 35 kAIC kit is not a legal install and you need the 65. On a long feeder run off a small transformer, 35 is typically plenty. Take the number from the fault current study for that panel location.

Q: Will the Eaton CHMIKCSR interlock kit work on my Eaton CH load center?

A: The CHMIKCSR fits Eaton CH load centers that use a CSR or CSH main breaker, in three-phase configuration, rated 225A. If your CH panel has a different main breaker type (or a main lug setup with no breaker to interlock), this kit is not the one. Match the main breaker designation stamped on the breaker before ordering.

Q: Does this Eaton module include the main breaker, or do I add one?

A: The main breaker is part of it. This is a Type KD MCB unit, meaning the meter position and the main circuit breaker protection are combined in one module rather than metering only. If you want a meter socket with no main disconnect, that is a different piece of equipment.

Q: Is the Eaton 13-jaw meter socket self-contained or does it need current transformers?

A: It's a transformer rated, instrument rated socket, so it is not self-contained. The 20A rating is the instrument circuit rating, not the service load. You feed it from current transformers (and potential transformers where the utility requires them) on the primary side, and the socket carries only the CT secondary and voltage circuits to the meter. If you're metering a service directly without CTs, you need a self-contained socket instead.
